So the refs just screwed the Saints. Saints kick a FG, they blow whistles for illegal formation before time hits 0 as he nails the kick. The clock then runs out and the refs say the good kick is nullified by the penalty, back 5 yards and there is no untimed down. 1. That is a horrible rule. The gameclock wasn't running so the play should be redone, especially if the FG was originally good. 2. If the whistles were blowing before the play clock hit 0 after the snap then the clock should be stopped with time for another play anyways. Expect the NFL to make it go away by ignoring it.

Illegal formation isn't dead at the snap. But the refs blew the whistle. Plus why should there not be another play if the option is a good point otherwise?

Wow the refs just cost the Saints the game. He really did only come out for a timeout and nothing else. Of course he'll be abrupt and sound frantic. All the refs are far away and time is ticking.
That was big for the Vikings and Eagles. Almost surely locks in the first round bye for the Vikings and the Eagles can pretty much lock it up for both of them with a win this week.
But C'mon guys. The Saints had every opportunity to win that game after those 2 calls. And didn't. The referees are part of the game. Like it. Or hate it. The Ref are part of the game !!!
I disagree that the refs screwed the Saints. At the end of the half, the guy lining up off the line of scrimmage screwed the Saints...if there was a defensive penalty then they get an untimed down, but it was on the offense, no such luck. At the end of the game, Brees screwed the Saints. Bad interception, dumb throw. Yeah the penalty on Peyton was dumb and likely a misunderstanding, but it was 3rd and 2...there’s no guarantee the Falcons are stopped and even if the Saints stopped them, the punt would’ve come at 20 seconds or so. 4-5 second hang time, puts the Saints around their own 30 with 15 seconds to go and no timeouts. That’s a tall order, even for Drew Brees. Bottom line: Saints should blame themselves long before they blame the refs.
