    lol! classic showstopper....

Pettine is an NFL head coach, and his history indicates he specializes in the defensive side of football. Guess what? that qualifies him as a defensive guru.....

Browns fans have just been through too much. I guess the negativity is to be expected at this point....I choose to look at this season so far in a different light. To me, we are two last second FG's away from being 3-0....To Stopper, and many others (including my own father), we are one last second kick away from being 0-3. Both statements are true, but the folks like myself that try to spin this thing positive do seem to be out numbered....It's understandable considering how bad it has been, but if I honestly thought that negatively about Cleveland football, I just wouldn't even watch...

Any fool can see that the Browns are improving...Those that simply point the record after 3 games and say, "same old Browns", are being extremely naive.

TD, I beg to differ. Those who are being so negative and Manzielots. What else can they have hoped for?

A new HC, new DC, new OC, and lots of new players. No Gordon, no Tate, half a Cameron. Given the exact same record with Johnny Football at the helm and we'd be hearing how "the only reason we aren't 3 and 0 is those missing pieces".

With all this team has had to overcome, just to understand and execute these new systems, Manziel would have been set up to fail, so Hoyer got the nod, and a very smart move at that. What has happened is that Hoyer has taken this sub par group and had them on the same page and scoring. Yeah us!

I stated before the season started that Hoyer would start the season and in all probability Manziel would start game 4, after the bye. I thought it would have been unfair to Hoyer to do so, because of the more winnable schedule, but none the less figued that was how it would work. Unexpectedly the O started the season looking like a true NFL O, and the path to Johnny became muddled.

The D turned out to be the unit not yet understanding their roles, and thus costing the team. It was to be expected, but didn't happen on the O side of the ball. That was the surprise. Going forward into this weaker opponent part of the schedule, if we don't win, then it's Johnny time, and I am fine with that, as would we all be. If Hoyer continues to impress and play among the top half of the league????????

I just want to win. I am pleased with the team overall, but I won't be if we "play well" and lose. Right now I am among the happy quiet fans, who's anxious for next week.

  4. Wasnt Pat Shurmur an OC and HC?....in ur eyes does that make him a guru? Plz dont make me find all ur negative pts bout him

Using Showstopper Rule #1: Past and present cannot be argued against each other as it may disprove whatever Stopper has to say.

    So..........

That doesn't matter, have anything to do with what is being discussed, etc., etc., yada yada yada.......That was in the past. TD is talking about Pettine who is the coach this year.

Damn stopper...What does it take to get you to open your eyes and comprehend? You realize that there are only 32 NFL head coaches in the world, right??? And you realize that the NFL is the highest that one could ascend to in that proffession, correct??? lol! I mean, there are hundreds of thousands of coaches that wish they could say, "i'm an NFL coach"...

Do I hate Pat Shurmur? Yes, with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns! But he is still considered an offensive guru in the coaching profession....I mean C'MON! He's the OC for the guru of all guru's right now. lol!

That sums it up. Winning is what it's all about. I won't be happy with playing well and losing either. We shoulda beat the Steelers and Ravens. Both losses were extremely painful...I'm really anxious to see how these next 5 games go. All are winnable, and that's what I'll be expecting.

I don't care who the QB is. I like them both, but I definately feel Hoyer deserves to remain the starter and he gives us the best chance to win right now...JM's time will come, and I will be calling loudly for him if we don't start racking the W's up soon...

These are fair assessments..Right now I am 100% Brian Hoyer...Do I think Johnny Manziel will ultimately be better, yes, imho he will be. However, the coaching staff has more trust in Hoyer right now, so I will too.

All I want is to win...Let's get on a 5 game win streak here and see where it goes from there!

The NFL wants to ?Protect Football on Free TV.? The FCC did just that on Tuesday, voting unanimously to abandon the blackout rule.

?This is a historic day for sports fans,? Sports Fans Coalition chairman David Goodriend said in a release. ?Since 1975, the federal government has propped up the NFL?s obnoxious practice of blacking out a game from local TV if the stadium did not sell out. Today?s FCC action makes clear: if leagues want to mistreat fans, they will have to do so without Uncle Sam?s help.?

It doesn?t mean the blackout rule has died; the NFL and broadcast networks can agree to abide by its terms. Today?s decision means only that the NFL can?t insist on network blackouts via an FCC policy that previously gave the NFL the ability to pull the plug.

Since 1975, the NFL has blocked local broadcasts of games in which the home team failed to sell all non-premium tickets at least 72 hours before kickoff.

The next step could be to pursue federal legislation that would eliminate the broadcast antitrust exemption if the NFL doesn?t abandon the blackout practice altogether. If the bill introduced last year becomes law, blackouts immediately will go the way of the dodo bird, the dropkick, and Tom Brady?s talent.

  11. So mayb guru isnt the correct word...mayb talented or smart? I dont think people are going around saying Dennis Allen is a guru...lol

Not to throw fuel on the fire, but you are arguing for a guys who made it 2 years as a head coach in Shurmur and Allen...Neither of which are still employed...

However, BEFORE they were hired as HC, they were both highly touted coordinators albeit for short periods Allen (1 year) and Shurmur (2 years), and as TD mentioned, Shurmur found a home as a coordinator pretty damn fast once he was let go in Cleveland.

Dennis Allen and Pat Shurmur were fast tracked in their career...which is most likely what caused their demise more than anything else. Allen only spent 10 years in the NFL (1 as coordinator) and Shurmur 12 years (2 as coordinator)

For this reason, I fear Pettine's fate as well, as he just entered the NFL 12 short years ago...coming directly from the high school level. Although he does have 5 years as a coordinator under his belt.

Of the current HC, Belichick is right at the top of the list and he paid his dues spending 10 years as an assistant before his first DC position, and spending 5 years there before getting his first HC gig with the Browns.

John Harbaugh spent 4 years at the college level and another 9 years as a ST Coordinator before getting elevated to HC

The longest tenured current coach besides Belicheat, Marvin Lewis spent 4 years in college, then 4 years as NFL assistant before becoming a coordinator for 7 years before getting his HC job.

Next in line Tom Coughlin spent 14 years in college, 7 years as an assistant in the NFL, then took a HC job at Boston College for 3 years to earn his right to becoming a NFL HC.

Nowadays, teams seem to be looking for the next big thing, and in doing so, overlook the fact that many of these guys haven't earned their stripes long enough.

Take Mike Tomlin for example, a Super Bowl winning head coach...but under further review, he took over a Super Bowl caliber team and won the big one, while digressing nearly every year since...What did his ladder look like? 4 years in college, 7 years NFL assistant and 1 year as a coordinator...Now he is in jeopardy of becoming the shortest tenured HC in Pittsburgh Steelers since Chuck Noll took over in 1969. He has a higher winning percentage than his previous two HCs, however he has digressed to consecutive 8-8 seasons and has the Steelers currently at 2-2, or .500 once again.

Trying to figure out the perfect HC isn't an exact science...but some are given a stepping stone when they become one (Belichick had Parcells team {edit: actually took over for Pete Carrol who took over for Parcells}), while others are beginning from scratch (Sean Payton took over for a Jim Haslett team that hadn't made the playoffs in 5 years)..

Oh here we go...lol! Whatever stopper. Maybe "Guru" IS the right word, and you are just getting too hung up on it....I doubt many are calling Dennis Allen talented and smart right now either.

You are supposedly a football coach. I would think you, of all people, would have a pretty clear grasp of what I'm saying. Instead, it once again seems like you are arguing just for the sake of arguing... Anyway, this is stupid. I'm done with this topic. If you don't want to think of Pettine as a defensive "guru", than that's up to you. lol!

    The Morning Kickoff ?

Fantasy football: The Browns re-start their season with a worse record (1-2) than when they came out of training camp (0-0). Yet optimism is in the air.

The offense is much better than anyone expected. The defense and special teams -- not. But it?s the nature of the NFL nowadays. If you can score, you have hope.

The Browns have proved they can score and they?ve done it with receiver Josh Gordon out for all three games, running back Ben Tate out for 2 ?, and tight end Jordan Cameron out for 1 ?. Like last season, quarterback Brian Hoyer has injected confidence in the locker room and outside of it.

The other source of optimism is the immediate schedule: At Tennessee (1-3), home v. Pittsburgh (2-2), at Jacksonville (0-4), home v. Oakland (0-4), home v. Tampa Bay (1-3).

So, following the upbeat theme, we?re considering the possibility of these Browns storylines in the weeks ahead:

Oct. 5, NASHVILLE, TN ? Brian Hoyer?s two fourth-quarter touchdowns erased a seemingly comfortable Tennessee lead and led to questions about Titans defensive coordinator Ray Horton?s ability to protect a lead.

Horton, who moved to the Titans after overseeing six blown leads in the second half in Cleveland a year ago, promised to have a statistical rebuttal of his unit?s performance when he addresses Tennessee media during his regularly scheduled press conference on Thursday. The Titans announced some tickets are still available for the Ray Horton Show.

Oct. 12, CLEVELAND, OH ? Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin declined to comment after newly activated linebacker James Harrison set an unofficial NFL record for personal fouls in a Steelers loss to the Browns.

The game was Harrison?s first since coming out of retirement to fill the role of right outside cheap-shot artist in Tomlin?s defense.

Harrison managed two helmet hits and a couple of late hits.

After the game, Harrison said, ?I think this was a major step forward. I feel my game coming back to me.?

Oct. 19, JACKSONVILLE, FL ? Joe Haden had a triumphant return to his nearby college stomping grounds and intercepted Blake Bortles two times, returning one for a touchdown, in a rare Browns? romp.

With the score so lopsided, Johnny Manziel played the entire fourth quarter and led the Browns to two touchdowns in his first extended playing time as a rookie.

After the game, Jaguars owner Shad Khan said he would engage in conversations with the Browns to explore a trade of Bortles for Manziel.

?First we passed on Tebow, now Manziel. What the heck is going on here,? a frustrated Khan said after his team slumped to 0-7 this year and 4-19 under coach Gus Bradley. ?I want to have an entertaining team. Is that wrong??

Oct. 26, CLEVELAND, OH ? The Browns feasted on Oakland rookie quarterback Derek Carr for four interceptions, spoiling the return of Raiders interim coach Tony Sparano to the city that gave him his NFL coaching start.

Sparano, who was an assistant coach on the staff of Browns? expansion coach Chris Palmer in 1999 and 2000, took over for fired coach Dennis Allen after the fourth game.

Two of Carr?s interceptions were on passes intended for Greg Little, the former Browns receiver who was cut by the Raiders in training camp and recently re-signed.

Nov. 2, CLEVELAND, OH ? The Browns continued their winning ways by escaping with a victory over Tampa Bay.

The key play was a fumble by Bucs running back Bobby Rainey, who had spent a few weeks on the Browns? roster in 2013. Rainey had run around, through, and over the Browns? defense for 156 yards but fumbled on his 39th carry of the game. The Browns capitalized on the turnover for the winning points.

After the game, Bucs head coach Lovie Smith said he had Rainey on a 40-carry pitch count and had no other choice than to run the 5-7 Rainey into the ground with receivers Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson inactive for the game.

The bye week has done some good for Browns tight end Jordan Cameron.

Cameron said Tuesday that the sprained AC joint in his right shoulder is feeling better than it did heading into the bye week.

?I feel good. I feel healthy,? Cameron said, via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

There?s room for an asterisk next to Cameron feeling healthy, though. He also said that he thinks the injury, which he initially suffered in the preseason and aggravated in the season opener, is going to linger throughout the season. That?s not great news for the Browns offense, which still has a while to go before wide receiver Josh Gordon will return to the lineup.

It?s also not great news for Cameron, who is eligible for free agency after the season. Cameron has already missed one game because of the injury and had just one catch in Week Three, a pattern that would likely have a deflating effect on any contract offers that will come his way if it were to continue for the remaining 13 weeks of the regular season.

Veteran tailback Ben Tate suffered a knee injury in Week One. Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell performed well in his absence. Now that he?s back, will there be enough touches to go around?

?We?ll see,? Tate told reporters on Tuesday, via comments distributed by the team.

As to who?ll get the carries, the answer is less unclear.

?Whoever?s got the hot hand and whoever?s going to get us the win, that?s who we?re going to roll with,? Tate said.

That?s a far cry from Tate?s assessment before the season that he?s the starter and there?s no competition.

?I probably would have said the same thing,? West said. ?Everybody should have that personality coming onto the field. If you?re on the field, you should think you?re the best. If you don?t you shouldn?t be out there.?

West has emerged as the top option for the Browns, with 47 carries for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Crowell has 27 attempts for 141 yards and three scores.

Tate exited the Week One loss to the Steelers with only six carries for 41 yards.

How about the Browns having a RB problem?

A problem deciding which of 3 guys is the best, not which of 3 guys is #1 healthy enough to play, #2 capable, #3 won't hurt the team.

We could use more problems like that!

Cudos the O line. Well above expectations, and well done!

I am expecting to see a much stronger effort from the D going forward. I am hoping Pettine & co. have some answers there for the numerous missed tackles, missed assignments, and toasty CB play.

Opportunity lies immediately in front of this team. Are they ready to sieze it???????

  19. kendawg Guest

    WRs ?

What do we think of the recieiving corps?

Hawkins has been surprising, and we desperately need that to carry on. Austin ?????? Some good / some invisible. I guess that means average, for a #2.

Gabriel? Rookie who showed a knack for making plays in pre-season, but has been spotty in the real deal. still believe he could be a solid #2, but he's got some work to do.

Cameron, nothing to write home about. Injuries have obviously hurt his performance, but if he's going to be less than 100% it's going to hurt this young team. Let's hope a week off makes a difference. We need him to be at the very least a threat, so defenses can't just play him soft.

Benjamin strikes me as a speedster, without much else to reccomend him becoming more, so if he is becoming tentative on punt returing, he could become a casuality.

Then there's the stallion in the stable: Gordon. Can he get through the next 7 weeks without a mis step? If he can, will he be ready to play? If he plays can we get the ball to him? Inquiring minds want to know.

    Thoughts???????????

  20. Its so funny how u always say supposedly( I know 4 a fact I wuld run circles around u) and what does that have anything 2 do w the definition of guru....if Pettine is a guru what does that make Belichick, LeBeau(prime yrs), Capers, etc......MASTERMINDS!!!
