    ahhhhh. gotchya, makes sense.

I love 2 hockey teams and they're night and day in terms of offensive/defensive mentalities.

my thoughts from a fan of a very defensive minded Bruins team. I don't mind the weaker forecheck or the hunker down defensive mentality as long as it's done right. when an entire team buys in to a philosophy and plays hard, avoids the garbage, and outscores the opponent, I respect it. Problem is that everyone has to do it or its all for nothing. Jagr is killing me slowly here.

On the other hand are the Boston College Eagles. I have a family in there so Ive seen their team up close for many years. BC's motto is 'pressure' and has been for the entire York era. Pressure the opponent whenever they have the puck while being defensively responsible. Pressure the opponent by always head-manning the puck and get it in deep to cycle when you have possession.

Personally love both philosophies.....but only when they're winning.

Haven't we seen that at the beginning of each of the last 3 years at least?

Speaking of officials, they'll do their part to hold out after 2014. Look for some posturing this summer from the officials. I can't imagine their tolerance for the griping is going to be improved since their last negotiation.

I think I just saw Marleau working on his two piece stick. It was on the NHL network this weekend. pretty sure it was Marleau, if not someone else on SJ. Michael Nylander's kid is coming up the ranks, wonder if his kid uses a wooden stick. Doubt it but maybe he'll follow dad's lead.

    lol, that's the truth.

I would point to STL as an example of a scheme and philosophy that magnified officiating mistakes.

Making it all about anyone isn't any good, eg. burke lol, or crosby, when you don't notice the officiating, that's when its at its best.

  6. ya - the wording is vague, but to me, roughing boils down to hands to the head outside of the context of a fight. (punch, slap, facewash, whatever)

    easy, that's 5 and a game :)

i can't remember specific names, but i still hear it mentioned occasionally. of course, that was probably from the same folk who talk about award "nominations", so...

i understand what you're saying, but i still say no PKers of mine would use composites. they break when u look at them funny, i worry enough about the refs making it a 5 on 3 without my guy's equipment doing it.

well put skinny. the best officials are the ones you forget.

  9. poor matty. would it help if i posted the Macho Man video? can't get enough trevor gillies.

I agree, that's why I blame technology and the media so much. Refs, even the Koharskis, McCrearys, etc. shifted gears and changed how they called games a quarter century ago. They would let stuff fly for a period and then get whistle happy for lesser offenses in the 2nd. I thought it was just as ridiculous. Plenty of soft calls late too.

I'll have to look it up but I think cable may be to blame too. I know many significant hockey markets were simulcast. Now that almost everybody has both radio and tv crews now, the tv crews have more airtime to point out mistakes in officiating and to replay questionable calls and non calls. During a simulcast game, there wasn't nearly the time to point out questionable officiating since so much of the emphasis was just on calling the game as it was played. I'll have to look up the broadcast history of franchises this summer. There is still plenty of whining on radio calls, but they generally seem markedly better when it comes to the whining.

    lol

Fair opinion. I just think the overall advantage of the stick (weight mainly) offsets the few times a stick breaks. Actually, I think I want the player to play with what they were most comfortable with. I've never coached hockey though. I'll have to stay at a Holiday inn to solidify my position.

True Bob, officiating was always this way, there was never any golden age. The problem came when the league started to clamp down on clutching and grabbing, and alot more stuff started getting called, so the whole thing about putting the whistle away gets alot more difficult for a ref to do.

  13. I totally forgot about that conversation on the "Garth Snow's Plan" thread the three-headed monster made. I'm not sure if I'm still suffering from PTSD. Maybe I should ask them.

I'm not disagreeing with your point about clutching and grabbing, but I see it the same as how they used to call charging 20 years ago or stick penalties 10 years ago. All of a sudden the penalties went the ways of farts in the wind (as Buhdat would say). It will probably be the same with roughing or some other penalty group in 10 years depending on how the league evolves, or devolves depending on perspective.

Anybody know of a player that still uses a wooden blade at least?

i have a confirmed Ryan Smith (maybe just a wooden blade), a possible Joel Rechlicz and a heavily rumored Teeamu Selanne, Joe Thornton and Spazz... so far.
