What way should we go with the first pick? Looking at the defense, it was probably the best in the league by the end of the season. We really don’t have a glaring need on that side of the ball, with or without DuPree. Adeniyi or Skipper should be capable of filling his shoes opposite Watt. A back up safety would be nice in the later rounds. On offense we could use a bell cow RB , Tight End and a interior OL. Depending on who is available in Rd. 2 we should go either RB or TE. I personally would prefer to find the bell cow sooner than later. But there could be a stud TE when we pick at 49. I would love to get JK Dobbins at 49 and possibly Moss the league in Rd 3. What does everyone think about this upcoming draft and who we should try to target. We really need our offense to step up and give the defense a breather more often in 2020. So let’s get offensive in this draft.
Well DuPree has been tagged and Chickalo, Barron and Holton have been released. McDonald restructured his contract and Foster has retired. We definitely need to get a RB now that the Vanimal is staying put. Big Ben is reportedly ahead of schedule and everyone believes he will be stronger than ever. Give him a bell cow with our defense and we just might have found ourselves a SB ticket.
Well with hargrave now playing for the Eagles, wish he could have stayed I think they are weak at NT. They have Tuitt and Hayward which are solid when healthy at the ends, but the middle is now suspect. Can Buggs takeover that position or is he more an end than a NT, Alulalu is good alternate at the end not a NT, McCullers is weak and he’s not the answer, so I feel they can get a really good replacement at 49. I can see us still going TE too, Vanimal is staying and we have an unproven commodity behind him. Unless we re-sign Vannett. Would like to see Vannett with Ben at QB. IOL is a strong possibility too, just lost Foster to retirement and Finney is a FA. Banner and Feiler are RFA’s. I love Conner when he’s healthy but I don’t think he can stay healthy all season, so a bell cow RB might be a nice option as well.
The problem with going NT is that we only play them on 35% of the defensive snaps. With Ben back and healthy you would figure that our offense will score at least five more points per game average and that might reduce the NT % even more as teams feel the need to get something going even more against our suffocating defense. A bell cow would help eat up time to keep the defense even fresher. Also increasing the odds that opponents abandon the run.
Bozwell, Nelson, Roethlisberger and Haden all restructured. They have to sign some of our restricted free agents.
Steelers Depot is reporting that the Steelers will be signing FB Derek Watt https://steelersdepot.com/2020/03/steelers-to-sign-fb-derek-watt/ Jeremy Fowler tweeted Fullback Derek Watt is signing a three-year, $9.75-million deal with the Steelers, per source, reuniting with brother T.J. in Pittsburgh. The Steelers will have increased "Watt"-age in 2020!
Nix might be done. He is a better FB than Watt, but if his knee is bad he can’t play at the accustomed level anymore.
The roster is now 55 players with 48 game day active players. No suspension for substance abuse. Players can move up and down from the practice squad with out being exposed to waivers. Also 12 practice squad players per team.
I think Watt is a better all around FB he’s a better pass catcher, blocking and ST about even. Tyler and Chicc are gone but UG3 and Ola will pick up that slack and I think the CB we drafted last year will be the gunner.
The closer the draft gets the more RB makes sense. There are about 5-7 really good RBs in this draft and with the way teams ignore that position in the first round, there should be a buffet of them to choose from. Swift, Dillion, Dobbins, Akers to name a few. There should be at least two of these guys there when we pick. Any one of those four would be a step or two up from Conner. Having Conner start the season to give the rookie a chance to learn, with the lack of offseason work, would be ideal. Then when Conner gets hurt by game 4 our game changing RB will be ready to roll over opposing defenses. Ben will gush as the rookie destroys defenses and his passing lanes get much bigger.
I feel like the 2 best RBs suited best for the Steelers is Dobbins and Akers. Both have great vision, fantastic pass blockers and some of the softest hands among RBs in this draft.
