Gents, I think that at this point, we should strongly consider resigning Sheldon Brown. He has been serviceable, not to be confused with elite . Even if we draft Dee Milliner or the Honey Badger (rd 3?), we could still use veteran depth at CB and he could also serve as depth at FS. I think that the attacking defense that Horton wants to install will compensate for his lost step. Asomugha would also be a welcome addition as long as he realizes that he will not command a kings ransom after his failure with the Iggles.
I would like to keep him & move him to free safety ? he may not have the wheels he once had but he will make up for that with his football savy . he is a sure tackler . cut Young he stunk it up last year right along with Hagg .
I'm with you, but it's Joe Banner you'll have to convince. He already cut ties once with Brown three years ago as a member of the Eagles. He's renowned for his aversion to signing aged veteran players. Brown was more than serviceable last season, actually. He might have played his best season in orange and brown yet. I'm actually quite shocked he hasn't signed elsewhere. The two back-ups we've signed really underscore the point that in Horton's defense, the secondary is a distant third to the line and pass rushers. Ask yourselves... when's the last time Pittsburgh spent a first round pick on a cornerback? That's the school of thought we're working with here.
A fair point SAS. Are you saying that D-Mil may be off the radar? When do you see the Brown's addressing the other CB position?
Tyrann Mathieu in R3. I think #6 has to be used on an offensive playmaker. I think paying #6 overall for DeMarcus Milliner and having a #7 already invested in Joe Haden is not only not in this F/O's plans, but a poor choice.
Chance Womack it is then eh SAS Really SAS, Is there honestly an offensive prospect (playmaker) worthy of the #6 pick? :/ IMHO No. The #6 pick should be used on the best player available. Not reaching for a player out of need.
No, there isn't an offensive player available at #6, but I can definitely see a trade down into the teens, then a pick of Tyler Eiffert in the future. It just depends on who is there at 6 and those coveting a player to get them over the top on defense...
If #5 - #25 all grade out the same, what's it matter? OFFENSE Passing Yards - 19th (3,435) Passing TDs - 28th (16) Rushing Yards - 24th (1,593) Rushing TDs - 13th (12) DEFENSE Sacks - 9th (37.0) Interceptions - 12th (17) Rushing Yards Allowed - 19th (1,898) Passing Yards Allowed - 25th (3,923) So which category is the lowest and how do you improve it? Spoiler You draft Cordarrelle Patterson or Tavon Austin.
SAS, why would you draft the 2nd or 3rd best receiver in this draft at#6? Neither have as much potential as Justin Hunter...and don't kid yourself, every WR receiver in this draft will be taken on potential, similar to most of the pass rushers.
As the draft approaches more of these prospects go through workouts and interviews, I believer that the gap is narrowing somewhat. The entire offensive production can be improved throught the following. 1) A coaching staff that doesn't handcuff it's playmakers with an antiquated offensive shceme. 2) Draft Warmack at #6 and watch all the statistical categories for offense increase. (Please don't make me explain how having a stout run game and great pass protection will do this, I don't have time to provide a sadistical analysis for you) I don't think Patterson is the next AJ Green or Julio Jones, but would take him around 10 if we could find a trade partner, and pick up an extra pick or two. We have a guy similar to Austin already on the Roster, his name is Benjamin. IMHO Austin is not going to be that possesion type reciever which is what Weeden Needs. ..... Can you believe I let myself get sucked into this debate
No, he isn't...That would be Justin Hunter..Much better hands, better target in the red zone, and virtually the same speed as Patterson due to his better route running skills.
You can sit on the sidelines if you want, brother. Here's the concern with Warnack-- besides the fact he's a 6'2" guard who ran a 5.50 40 yard and played with more talent than any other prospect in the draft -- what if he doesn't improve our offense? We've already sunk $10 million a year into Joe Thomas. Well worth it, but costly. We have to re-sign Alex Mack this season and he'll make somewhere between $6 - $8 million a year. Besides eating up 15% of the cap with just two offensive lineman, Warmack would only add to that. Nevermind we've already put more draft picks into our offensive line than any other NFL team with diminishing returns. We've been bottom quintile in rushing and bottom half in pass protection... what's one small, slow, over-priced guard going to do to our lineup? Suddenly make us Top 5 in each category?
Most times I try, but I was a tad bored. While I tend to agree that having the entire O-line comprised of 1-3rd round picks is a bit excessive and will cause $$ issues later. My hang up with your argument is that there are essentially no offensive playmakers(WR/RB/QB/TE) in this years draft that honestly grade out as top 10 picks. None. Therefore, in order to draft the BPA without reaching based on percieved need, you end up with a top OL prospect or go Defense.
