So you guys know a lot more about the who's, how's and when's on this game but I'm getting better. I think this article has a lot of intelligence to it and really does help explain the why's of TJ and Bud switching sides. TJ simply reads better and that should save time and fill gaps more quickly. STOP THE RUN ! So, you guys who do know better, is this article a good primer to learn from regarding our "base" to Quasi" schemes ? Do you expect our defense to rely on the Quasi more in 2018 ? https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.c...nse-in-2018-keith-butler-mike-tomlin-nfl-news
Love the share but I really don't see the same things the author sees. In the first GIF he never mentions Watt. This is the GIF where Watt reads the play and attacks the gap. And then he uses his quickness and agility to avoid the trap block and get to the ball carrier. I agree the d-line blew up the play but Watt created the tackle for loss with his instincts and athleticism. In the second GIF Dupree indeed gets sucked inside but it was because he was reading the FB. The play was going right where he thought it was and the RB bounced it outside. This was not an inability to read the play. It was poor discipline. Assuming Tuitt was indeed responsible for the B-gap then Dupree had contain. He has to keep that play from getting outside of him and he didn't do his job. The third GIF is a real head scratcher. I just can't see anything remotely redeeming about what Watt does or accomplishes. The play was designed to go to the opposite A-gap and he gets blown up by a guard. The play was made by the CB on the outside beating the block and the RB bouncing a play outside that was setup pretty well. He should have just followed the FB up the gap and then he's one-on-one with the Mike. Could have been a 3-4 yard gain. No issues with the 4th and as a whole I'd agree Watt would be a better SAM but not because of his ability to diagnose. Maybe it's true but I don't think there's enough evidence to suggest it. There is evidence to suggest he's much quicker and more explosive. Anyway... good read and I could certainly see Watt in that role but not for the reasons listed and I think the author let his conclusion shape his analysis instead of the other way around. Plus it certainly helps that Watt is now in his 2nd year. To ask him to play that role as a rookie would have been foolish. It's natural to to add more on his plate in his 2nd year.
but I'm getting better ... ok, maybe I'll hold off on that for now ... :-< This is why i hope for your response beach, thanks for the insight. As many things, I have found, the end result is sometimes attained without good justification. It does look like TJ is more reactive and quicker to the punch, as a 2nd year guy it has probably slowed down enough for even better reaction and it looks like he has SAM written all over his new position. Will Bostic / Williams / Dirty Red have something to do with this positioning also? I like, also, the thought of them switching it up on occasion and for certain plays where their individual talents can be taken advantage of. OL guys keep guessing isn't a bad thing either ... one more thing to think of during live action. thanks man
Agree. If they are both used in the role it helps disguise who's playing the Sam. They can both setup off the ball until just before the snap. Maybe even switch assignments based on pre-snap motion. Not really my forte but seems logical.
What was our majority base last season because it felt like the 5¢ was out the most? I was thinking maybe I just noticed it more when Shaz was out but they rank the nick a lot didn't they? I'd have to think that we see a lot of Bud on the line and Watt at linebacker in that set this season.
Nickel has been played more often than the base 3-4 for a few years. So I guess you could call the nickel the base and the 3-4 the sub package. makes sense to me anyways.
In the 2nd GIF either Moats or I believe Davis is wrong in their run fit...one of them should be an A gap player and Davis is free in the B gap or vice versa...either way Davis should be making the tackle at or near the LOS cause he’s unblocked...instead he has to go around the guard and Moats cause somebody messed up
