There had been some ridiculous talk about the Cub$ pursuing Melky this offseason to play the OF. Something that was never going to happen. But there are now reports out of Toronto that have the Blue Jays acting like a legitimate big league baseball team and already saying that they will offer Melky a qualifying offer which would clearly end any Cub interest in him. Cause if the fanboys have taught us anything it is how dumb it would be to give up a draft pick in exchange for a proven, legitimate major league player when it can be used on a lottery ticket that has a small chance of actually contributing in the major leagues but would provide several years of feverish masturbation over every Keith Law and Baseball America article.
ESPN said Johnny Gomes because Theo loves him some Johnny Gomes. Russell Martin too. I'd love Martin. Castillo blows behind the plate.
Im sorry, I didnt realize the original post was full of baseball analysis and not a bunch of jibberish.
Oh and to the one baseball thing you kinda said. Melky isnt on the radar cause he is looking for 4 years and close to 50 million. Its funny because he is the exact same hitter as Castro that you say isnt good but now the Cubs wont go after proven major league hitting.
So what do you think Gomes is gonna command? How about Russell Martin, two names Jesse Rodgers linked to the cubs. I would much rather prefer Michael Cuddyer. Not exactly a strong hitter, or power hitter, but Gomes is better than Kalish and Sweeney. Career-wise he's about on par with Ruggiano, though Ruggiano is having a much better year than his career numbers have indicated, positive standard deviation. Would love Russell Martin, Kenta Maeda (this year's Tanaka/Japanese talent), Koji Uehara, and a run at Michael Cuddyer this winter. I feel next year's starting line up would be Coghlan, Castro, Rizzo, Cuddyer, Soler, Baez, Martin, Valbuena, SP. Rotation of Arrieta, Hendricks, Maeda, Wood, and Wada, though if they made a big run at Lester I wouldn't complain.
Of course most of us have read the garbage about Lester and the possible SpedStein courtship. The problem I see with this is that SpedStein will be in a bidding war and will definitely have to "overpay". Now if the Cubs do in fact get Lester.....Now what ??? You still do not have enough on the roster to compete, therefore they will have to go out and get the other pieces needed to do so triggering a massive spending spree. Oh fuck !!! So why get Lester alone ? Now if they decide to get Scherzer also then we are starting to see something serious in the works. My belief is that some feeble half-hearted attempt will be made knowing that they will not win the player over, but the SpedStein loyalists will point to the attempt as another valiant one that failed with a round of applause to quickly follow. Pretty sure that nothing significant will happen other than Bryant being on the ML roster for next year and some more garbage off the scrap heap for filler. This is and has been the new Cubs Way.
The funniest thing is that anyone would think Melky is the exact same hitter as Castro. The only people who would think that is someone who has never actually seen Melky play. Melky has a much better command of the strike zone and much better judgement on pitch recognition as evidenced by the fact he strikes out half as often as Castro does. He is an ideal top of the order, #2 hitter while Castro's far greater strikeout rate suits him better down in the order at 6 or 7. Not the same hitter at all. If you actually watched baseball you would know this instead of spending all your time reading about minor league prospects and repeating what you have read and trying to pass that off as your own knowledge.
So, Melky Cabrera has been linked to steroids. He walks about the same clip as Castro. His average is a litle bit better then Castro. He has a lower ISO and is declining in prime years. He actually is a worst baserunner then Castro by stats. He is a horrible defender in not a prime position by stats an d has about the same power or less with a guy who is not even in his prime power years. He is also looking for 12 million a year when Castro was to expensive at 5 million this year. You sir are a genius and your keen eye for talent is wasted. Tell me again why you dont make millions?
And? So was Nelson Cruz. What kind of season is he having this year? What kind of season did Melky have? Both of them had excellent seasons?? Thought so. I see you completely ignore the facts that he makes far, far, far better contact than Castro which is the main reason he is a better hitter and ideal to hit at the top of a lineup while Castro is suiting to be at the bottom of the lineup. He is not a worse baserunner. Baserunning metrics are even dumber than your defensive metrics you are so found of that everyone but the hardest core stat nerd will openly admit are extremely flawed. Fanboys will be fanboys. What was it?? 9-14??
I have been saying for months that I wish the Cubs would pursue Cabrera even if it was the only position player they nabbed. He is indeed the ideal #2 hitter as all of my line-ups have had him in. The Cubs could use the hotter hand Coghlan/Alcantara to play CF and lead-off (Coghlan better OBP, Alcantara better speed), followed by Cabrera who would give them top of the order production before the power hitters come up. With those two at the top, followed by Rizzo, Soler, and Bryant (not necessarily that order), I will gladly take my chances with Castro and Baez towards the bottom of the line-up providing much needed pop, and a threat to keep an inning going because of what they both bring to the table. For what it's worth, if I had my choice between Cabrera or Cruz, even though Cruz has much more power, I feel Cabrera adds to what the Cubs NEED which is players that put the bat on the ball and don't strikeout a ton, and could be put at the top of the line-up. Cabrera does that, also with a good average as a kicker.
Lol Castro strikes out under 20% which is more then respectable when K's are at an all time high in the league. Then you ignore the other 90% of my post because thats your MO. You are dumb
And Cabrera strikes out about half as often as Castro which is why multiple people are trying to educate you that Melky is a much better top of the order hitter than Castro, only you are too juvenile to accept it. I didn't ignore the other 90% of your post and in fact countered the ignorance with baseball acumen.
That was never the argument ya fucktard. The argument is you are ripping the Cubs for not trying to get the same type of hitter that you say is overpaid. Castro made 5 million this year. Cabrera wants 4 years 48 million plus it would cost a compensation pick. You have ranted that Castro is not good and doesnt deserve his contract but advocate signing a bad defensive, going into his decline year, same type of hitter as Castro. Oh I forgot, he strikes out less but still makes the same outs. He doesnt walk either. You are one stupid individual. You wins the internetz for the day.
Oh, and I like how Castro is a worse baserunner when you have probably watched Melky play less then 10 times this year. Crazy is as crazy does.
Anyone dumb enough to try and argue that all outs are equal shows a complete lack of understanding about the game of baseball. Well done.
Any games that I have watched Melky play this year is more games than you have ever seen him play. Clearly you have no idea that Melky spent an entire season in KC playing for the Royals also. Stupid is as stupid does.
