This is the guy who more than anyone is to blame for the Chiefs loss on Saturday. Kareem Hunt, the leading rusher in the NFL, only had 11 carries in a game in which his team led by double digits for the majority of the game.

    What the fuck!?

Of the candidates we interviewed, he probably has the least impressive resume. Ugh.

I need to remind myself that we have no idea if it was a good or bad hire right now.

Not excited to say the least .

He was QB coach with Chiefs from 2013-15 and offensive coordinator from 2016-17. Very little experience and he's only ever worked under Andy Reid.

Although Alex Smith has had fairly productive seasons under his guidance. So there's that.

If I read correctly he just started calling play in Dec for the first time ?

  7. blang84 Legend Bears

He only called 11 runs to Kareem Hunt on Saturday.

I had the luxury of not paying any attention to the whole "Kansas City/Andy Reid playcalling" issue earlier in the season (somewhere around the midway point, I think?). Now, obviously, it's worth revisiting.

Can anyone provide some clarification on exactly what went on, and what role Nagy played?

I can see the lack of excitement around the new head coach. There were a lot of options out there, and the Bears jumped first... just on a candidate that doesn't have much of a body of work, nor is as intriguing as several other candidates out there. I will say this: I'm excited for the new coach, if only because I'll get to see something different than I have in these past few years. That's a welcome change.

Potential Quote from Andy Reid :

Regardless, Reid has called Nagy one of the best head-coaching prospects he's ever had underneath him as an assistant. That's stout praise for the guy who helped to mentor a lot of future head coaches (more on that too): Pederson, John Harbaugh, Ron Rivera and Sean McDermott, just to name a few.

I will say that he doesn't have the deer-in-headlights look that Juicebox and Lovie had. He looks like a tough SOB.

Did you watch the game! In the first half Hunt had a total of 5 carries. The Chiefs lead 21-3. The strength of the Titans is their number 1 ranked run defense. Kinda makes sense to pass huh? And when they ran it was effective because the pass kept them off balance.

Now in the second half they might have gotten a few more opportunities if the defense didn’t allow the Titans to be perfect on 3rd down.

I am not a fan of the Nagy hire. I wanted McDaniels. My second choice would have been Shumer. If I had to choose between Nagy and Defilipo I guess I would go Nagy. But Nagy was definitely not the main reason the Chiefs lost that game. Does he share in the blame? Yes like any OC has to when your team gets shut out in a half but the only reason Nagy is getting torched is because he is a hot Coaching candidate.

Cant judge this hire based on one playoff game.

This is gonna be a move that takes time to prove itself.

Does he keep a Fangio? Who does he add to staff?

Wasn't my first pick but I'm gonna withhold judgement for now.

At least they picked from a good coaching tree.

Jon Gruden, John Harbaugh, Ron Rivera, and Doug Pederson are all formed Reid assistants that have become NFL head coaches.

And Nagy is known as a creative guy that is a good play caller.....he inherits a young, versatile athletic QB as well as Jordan Howard, Tarik Cohen, and a young TE in Shaheen with a high ceiling.

Waiting for news that Fangio is being retained. That would be huge.

I should prob state that I was never really invested in any part of this search once I learned that Sweat Face and McFuckskey 3 were gonna be trampling all over Pace's turf just like they did last time to predictably disastrous results. I'm virtually expecting this whole thing to get fucked up again.

That said, I did actually think they would hire DeFellipo, and that would've been my preferred choice probably. Nagy would've been near the top of my personal list. There are absolutely things to like. There are reservations too at this stage.

Nagy does come from a very good stable in Andy Reid and Reid himself has spoken glowingly about Nagy in terms of being a future HC. That carries weight with me. This is a hire with at least one eye solely on getting the maximum out of Trubisky, which personally I feel they need to do. As an Offensive brain Nagy already has a burgeoning rep, that's another plus. From what I've heard he's a strong character, not necessarily a one dimensional screamer like a Schiano, but a guy with the demeanor to be a HC, which with Trestman still in memory, matters.

I also think Nagy's system will def play to some of Trubisky's strengths. There'll be a lot of shotgun, he'll use the QB's mobility etc.

But here is where my reservations start. Because from what I know of the Chiefs Offense there are some key differences to the Bears. The Chiefs use speed a lot at the WR position. They have burners on the outside and the Bears just have zero resembling that. The Chiefs seem to use spread formations a lot, sending a lot of guys out on routes. That's all well and good, but do that and you isolate your Tackles who will often be blocking without help. Given the garbage we have at the T position I find that a tad scary.

Nagy and his system may be a fit for Trubisky, but it doesn't in my humble opinion look like a straight fit for the personnel he currently has on Offense.

This probably makes retaining Fangio and his defensive scheme even more important. Because its very simple.... thanks to Pace's propensity for flushing multiple picks on individual players, the Bears barely have the resources to overhaul one side of the ball, let alone both sides. This has the worrying feel of another multiple year rebuild even tho we never really finished that last rebuild. A rerebuild if you like.....

The playcalling is something i'm not sure about, guess i'll just cross my fingers.

I mean we have the running back. And if you really wanna stretch Shaheen could potentially become a Travis Kelce type one day? He'll be running a lot more routes anyway which personally I consider a good thing.

There's a lot of names I would've liked less than Nagy. But keeping Fangio feels like a must now, because the overhaul of Offensive personnel is probably gonna be higher now than if they had hired a DeFillipo who may have fitted better with the players we currently have.

The receiver position definitely doesn't match what Nagy is known to like.

I'm personally glad they steered clear of Defillipo. Many NFL insiders had him ranked at the bottom of the available candidates.

And I have to agree with rob on the Chiefs-Titans game. Blowing an 18point 2nd half lead looks bad on paper, but the Chiefs never had control of that 2nd half. Their Defense simply couldn't get off the field.

The Titans came straight out and scored a TD after halftime. And they made it a 5 point game only seconds into the 4th Q. In fact in think when the Titans took the lead there was like 6minutes still on the clock! There was really only one chance all 2nd half for the Chiefs to try and bleed some clock before getting points and that was after they recovered that muffed punt at like the 30. I think they went like 3 passes then the kicker missed to FG to make it a 14point game.

It looks bad using Hunt as little as they did, but there's elsewhere to point the finger first imo.

Really?? Wow, I find that a bit surprising. In a league that is QB driven now more than ever, I would've thought people would look at the incredible development of Wentz and hold DeFillipo in high regard. But like I say, I really hadn't been reading up on all this over the last week or two *shrugs*

I think credit for Wentz is being given more to Reich than Flip.

What I've read is a lot of folks like Defillipo but thinks it's too early for him.

I was a bit surprised that Reich wasn’t one of the hot names out there as a HC candidate. Seemed kind of odd that he was looked past to the QB coach.
