Konz to IR

  1. Torgo M.V.P. Manager Falcons

ESPN's Vaughan McClure tweeted yesterday that the injury to Konz was "pretty bad". Reports came in that he would not be making the flight to London (the team left directly from Baltimore) and that he'd be having an MRI today.

The team confirmed it about 30 minutes ago - he's out for the rest of the season. To fill his spot on the roster, the Falcons have signed free agent offensive tackle Jonathan Scott.

The eyebrow-raiser is why another tackle instead of a center. Apparently the game plan is to go with undrafted rookie James Stone as the new starter, and most likely with cross-trained guard Harland Gunn as the backup. Yikes.

Gabe Carimi got off to a pretty good start this season but has struggled horribly of late at right tackle. Jake Matthews has done the same at left tackle. He's also trying to work his way through an ankle injury.

Scott gives the team three other options at tackle, in case one or both needs to come out of the starting lineup for a while. The others are second year prospect Ryan Schraeder, who has been serving as the swing tackle, plus recently added Cameron Bradfield, who was released by the Jaguars after a horrid start to the season.

The loss of Konz makes five offensive linemen on IR for this team, matching the five that the Falcons lost in the 2007 season.
