Joe Banner wants to change the mentality of the team.

  1. The Browns CEO thinks the mentaqlity of the team needs to improve in order to win. He has made it part of his agenda to improve the moral and attitude of coaches and players with improvements to the stadium and bringing in fresh coaches and players with upbeat, winning attitudes. The team does appear improved this preseason, but in 14 previous seasons is "winning attitude" ALL that the team was missing keeping it from being a winner?

No that isn't ALL it was missing, but I think this new regime has stepped it up in a) ownership, as long as he stays out of jail; b) coaching, they seem to have the attention of the players who are buying into their program and c) the roster itself has definitely seen an improvement in quality with a good mix of youth and veteran leadership for the first time in these past 14 years..

Does attitude matter? Ask Ray Lewis

Does coaching matter: Ask San Fran

Slam has made it a priority to demonstrate positive change. He stepped up and spent the money (where he got it not withstanding) to "show" he means to change this franchise. I like the coaching staff choices, and all of it speaks to doing more than talking about change.

Does that change the results on the field? Not in and of itself, but it does allow the team to feel a part of something that is visibly and tangibly changing. Whether that bears fruit is still open to argument, but foundationally the team and staff have to have gotten the message, we are willing to do whatever it takes to help you succeed. Failure this year cannot be placed at the feet of management disinterest or lack of support. That in itself is a positive change.

I have always believed that businesses inevitably reflect their management / ownership. Lerner was disinterested and it showed consistently in the way the team was run and the performance on the field. Slam actually "wants" to own this team and make it a winner. The energy is different, higher, and more focused than anything Lerner presided over.

I think they have changed the mentality, for now. My concern is what happens to that when adversity strikes, as it has with injuries to key positions, and with your best WR out for games one and two. Wll it be "next man up" or "hang on til we are whole". A firmness of mind and committment to one another has to be forged, and preseason isn't where that happens.

Let the games begin. Mentally, Physically and Literally. GO BROWNS !
