I haven't looked much into this story aside from hearing about it coming down the pipeline last night. Smith mentioned appealing the decision yesterday, but not sure if he's going to do it now or not. I don't really know what all is going on with this one, so hopefully some information comes out about this. It sounds like there was not physical abuse, but there was mental abuse instead? That seems to be the clearest thing I've heard. I'm not even sure how old the allegations are. Smith seems to make it sounds like it was a really long time ago, but who knows. I know coming out of college, Smith had a lot of people concerned about red flags, but honestly, aside from one run-in where he was helping a drunk friend, he's done pretty well off the field (substance suspension not withstanding). After the Ray Rice situation, how are people feeling about this one? Is the lack of physical abuse different for you? Do you simply want to learn more? Do you not care at all?
Don't know all the facts yet. We don't know if he was calling his ex-GF names or threatened her in some way. Neither is acceptable but there's a world of difference. The question is: How will the affect our 1st 4 games?
I think the NFL has been to quick to punish in the name of protecting their brand. Not just on this issue, but for many that feature no criminal charges or real actions worthy of arrest. From what I've read around the league, it all stems from a custody battle with his ex girlfriend. He apparently "threatened" her by saying he'd kick her out the house. Maybe there's more to it, but I haven't heard yet. But if that's all it is, I don't see how it warrants 4 games. Didn't Winston get less for grabbing an uber driver's crotch?
I think I really want to know how long ago this happened whatever it is. Are we talking 3 to 4 years ago?
If it was 3-4 yrs ago then why wouldn't Jimmy choose to fight it? That would be an easy call for him. If it was as far back as the draft and there is more to the story then I can understand not choosing to fight it.
Now understand, I just made up a 3-4 year time frame. I am just saying that if we look back at things I said or did in college or right after, older Kid wouldn't be too pleased with himself. I don't know how you could possibly be punished for something that long ago either (especially if it legitimately isn't physical/criminal). For all I know this could have happened 3-4 days ago though, and maybe that changes things. It's just too ambiguous. I like though that mike florio obviously knows every detail about what happened but won't share the evidence with anyone.
