I'm not sure if this news would have made it's way to the States but what a devastating tragedy. Fifteen players died when their bus collided with a tractor trailer (details still haven't been released about the cause of the crash) and 14 people were taken to hospital. Canada is standing up in support for the small community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. A gesture of support that has moved across all of the provinces like wildfire is the leaving of hockey sticks outside of our houses and it's being hashtagged as #SticksforHumboldt.
BF-I saw it on ESPN the night it happened and it was on CBS Sportsline the next day. Tragic, sad and just awful. A terrible loss for the hockey community and all hockey fans. I feel for the families. An old ex-Flyer player lost his son in the accident.
Unreal. I lost my son at a young age and I have huge sympathy for what they're going through. I put my son's stick outside too.
I’m sorry to hear that babyfan. It’s awesome that you put his stick out there. Do you live near Humboldt?
With so many in our hockey community joining in with gestures of support #sticksoutforhumboldt I wanted to share this image. This one really hits me hard.
I didn't catch it but Blitzburgh was telling me that all kinds of beautiful tributes and messages of support were shown on Hockey Night in Canada.
Yep, its amazing. Nobody, I mean NOBODY out dose the hockey community when it comes to supporting them selves. Ive been very impressed with the way the Hockey folks in North America have come together to address this issue. HNIC rocks, by the way. They are head-n-shoulders above the rest when it comes to presenting the NHL and other hockey related material. Been a fan of them all my life. It aint Saturday night for me if I miss Coach's Corner either. Love Cherry, Maclean and all those down there.
LOL Cherry KILLS me!! Oh my God, I can remember him from years ago. Those suits? It's like every week you can count on going very very blind ... but he is definitely a Canadian icon (even though most of us have better taste in clothing). The Hockey association is a very tight group. I don't know if they are more loyal than any other sports organization but they certainly stand up for their brothers when tragedies happen.
I saw the Crosby tribute on Facebook. Really well done. Like the Facebook post said, it's not much of Crosby, but it's something small that could go a large way with the survivors. Crosby is a true ambassador for hockey and always does the right thing when the time is needed. Babyfan- so sorry for your loss, that's awful. I think the hockey community is so tight bc many current and past NHL'ers played in the league Humboldt played in or a league just like it when they were younger. They know about long bus rides with fellow teammates etc. They probably think of themselves when they see a crash like that and think "that could've been me when I was younger." And in fact, a bus accident happened before in the 1986 Swift Current Broncos bus crash, that killed the younger brother of NHL coach Lindy Ruff, so it has happened before. They come together as a hockey family because they all know of the bus rides and in some cases, tragic losses to friends and teammates before.
