http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/t...-mlb-players-who-could-make-the-hall-of-fame/ i will comment more about some of these guys later.
? we discussed him bf. CBS says he's in easily but doesn't show his stats and says his numbers aren't there. then why does he get in easily? no plaque says he worked well with a pitching staff and had great on-field leadership. sorry. i just don't see it. put his career vs the latest HOF catcher Pudge. It's really not close.
Most of the other catchers that are in pale in comparison to Pudge, as well, though. Yadi should certainly come out better than guys like Rick Ferrell and Al Lopez. He's not a lock to me, either - but just because he's not one of the 2 or 3 best offensive catchers ever doesn't rule him out. He's a guy I'd at least consider. The only surefire if-they-retired-tomorrow guys to me right now are Ichiro, Pujols, Cabrera, and Beltre. I would've put Cano, Beltran, and Molina in their own tier between those four and his next group. I.e., guys that are as good or better than guys that are in but don't automatically scream no-brainer 1st ballot guy to you when you hear their name, either. I don't see any strong contenders in the "Borderline" or "Work to do" categories. King Felix was well on his way at one point but seems to be declining rapidly. Pedroia might have a case if he can stay injury-free for a few more years and/or wins another ring or two. Trout and Kershaw are easily on the 1st ballot track so long as they stay healthy. Too soon to call the rest of them. Bumgarner's post-season record stands out, but it's so hard for young pitchers to sustain early success.
u dog - im stunned at beltran's stats. i think he played a long ass time bc i recall him with johnny damon as a royal. haha. he gets in. trout and kershaw need to get past 10 yrs and they're in. puckett got in on a short career and his stats arent that great vs other short time career players. i dont get how CBS can say Molina is in but then says doesn't have the stats? to me he's not a HOF catcher. Maybe he is, but like Raines, he wasn't the best catcher in the last 30 yrs.
Well, he's pretty clearly the best of the last 30 years at all aspects of being a catcher besides hitting. And doing everything else that goes into being a catcher at an elite level for over a decade while being even just a league average hitter is pretty darn good. Yes, Beltran is pretty clearly a HOF'er when you look at his overall stats. Especially when you throw in his postseason #'s, which are insane. But he is ultimately one of those guys who was more very good for a long time than ever really great...he was consistently good, but never lead the league in anything...he was basically always around the 5th-10th best player in the league but never had any dominant seasons. I could see him being a guy the voters debate about for a good 5-6 years before he finally gets in.
2018 ballot - chipper jones, jim thome, trevor hoffman and vlad guerrero are on the ballot and i feel ALL 4 are getting into Cooperstown! There's a new committee or a old committee with a new name of Modern Day Baseball with their own ballot December 10th for the HOF too. Jack Morris, Donny Mattingly, Alan Tramell, Luis Tiant, Lou Whitaker, Tommy John, Steve Garvey and some others are on it. I wanted Morris for the real HOF vote, so I hope he gets in. This committee hasn't inducted anyone since 2001. You need 12/15 votes to get in. They have however did put into Cooperstown a few players that got killed on the real HOF voting process. Dec 10th is the announcement.
If Marvin Miller doesn't get in, I will dub this new version of the Veteran's Committee every bit the useless sham the old one was (not that I didn't already pretty much feel that way last year after Steinbrenner only got 7 votes). Miller should 1000% be in. Chipper is a lock. Him and Thome are the only 1st timers with a shot. Vlad should be in before Thome. I suspect Vlad goes this year wth Chipper and then Thome goes next year with Rivera. Hoffman we discussed last year - I don't have a big quarrel with him except that he's the exact same pitcher as Lee Smith who never got above 50%. If he doesn't get it this year, being on the same ballot with Mo will really hurt him next year. Hoffman probably gets it this year, too, since he was so close last year.
I thought Vlad should've been in last year IMO. Hoffman has 600 saves. Smith has 478 so they aren't the same. I do think Smith got robbed and should've been in as well since Bruce Sutter got in. Miller should be in and although I'm a Phillies fan - im pulling for Trammel and Morris on the other committee vote.
Like I said last year, the difference in save totals between Smith and Hoffman is a function of when they played (Smith was far and away #1 all time when he retired). The rest of their stats are pretty similar. Don't forget the third Tiger great of the 80's who should be in...Sweet Loooooou!
Lou is also on the Veterans ballot. Growing up Alan Trammel was a great SS that sadly was in a shadow unfaily of Ripken, Smith and even Yount. Not fair to him at all.
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/joe-mo...steroid-users-belong-hall-fame-163744968.html Joe Morgan's take on Steroids and the HOF. Wow.
Jaysus what a self-important blow hole. How come he's not calling for players with suspect integrity and flawed sportsmanship like Gaylord Perry, Fergie Jenkins, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, or Kirby Puckett to be removed from the Hall?
they turn a blind eye to greenies, booze etc and bash steroid users. yeah it's real easy to do that bc they're already in the HOF. If Raffy Palmeiro kept his mouth shut and didn't swear his innocence bf getting caught he may be in too as he retired a year or so after the Congress hearings.
Jack Morris and Alan Trammell rightfully get elected into the MLB Hall of Fame thanks to the Modern Era Committee.
You can have Morris with Detroit the Jays won 2 WS titles despite him lol. Although in 1992 he was one of the best regular season pitchers and was the AL win leader and coming off a WS title and AS year in Minny. 0-3 in the 1992 postseason and that essentially marked the beginning of end of his career. Eventually the players' strike came and he decided he was done.
yeah but he was 3-0 for Detroit in the 84 postseason and lets not forget 1991 for Minnesota, where he was 4-0 in the post-season? A guy wrote a long column on why Morris should not be in the Hall. He said Dave Steib was better. I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Dave Steib ? Morris was a horse and had the most opening day starts in the decade of the 1980's! It's not all about Cy Young Awards as the writer points out a glaring omission on Morris' resume. It's total body of work. I wanted him in on the regular HOF vote. So happy him and Trammel, who I thought got hosed on real vote finally got in. Sadly, Ted Simmons fell 1 vote short of getting in. This new committee has a different set of voting rules and 13 were needed for Cooperstown. Trammell had 13, Simmons had 12. Ouch.
