https://247sports.com/Article/Cam-N...ade-injured-reserve-Kyle-Allen-NFL-138454107/ Obviously it all comes down to his health. He sucked badly last year and the beginning of this year. If he can't get healthy, this would be a horrible trade. But otherwise, if we knew he could get back to 100%, I'd approve. Not sure what we'd give up, I guess we can give them our 2021 first rounder since Pace would probably blow that anyway. Also, you all probably saw this article, detailing how we really never considered Watson at all in spite of everything he had just accomplished at Clemson: https://www.chicagotribune.com/spor...0191112-mkiclk4l4jb3bndxf7azbtdw6m-story.html Fuck Pace.
So check the Mongo thread about the whole "no meeting" with Watson. As for this--as I/several have pointed out when we brought up the possibility of Teddy Bridgewater; where do you get the cap from? Cam is due 22.1 mil in 2020, and you walk into this offseason with now 14.5 mil in cap space (after releasing Mike Davis) before anybody else gets cut. How are you fitting that in, on top of resigning your own guys; the priorities include RRH, Nick K and/or Danny T, Nick Williams, and Sherrick McMannis (I'm not including Clinton Dicks because I think he's gone, but feel free to lump him under 'priority' if you see fit.) After these guys, you still have Coward, Deon Bush, DeAndre Houston-Carson, Isaiah Irving, JP Holtz, and Cornelius Lucas in the tier below 'priority.' Then you also have regular free agency, where you go after other free agents. Then you have the draft to fit in. I haven't even touched on how Cam is injury prone and has an open opinion/attitude about him (positive or negative) that goes against the grain of the Bears being a quiet franchise that keeps everything under wraps. It's pretty likely Carolina is going to cut him, because they can save 19 mil and some change while eating 2 and change in dead money. Giving up an asset, a draft pick isn't preferable, nor is seeing a cocky cross-dresser at the podium after a win/loss. The only way I can say 'yes' is Carolina to eat a bad contract back (Trey Burton) and part of Cam's salary. But that makes no sense for Carolina. They'd just cut him and be done with it.
An inaccurate, washed up, injury prone prima donna with a gigantic contract and no desire to do what made him successful (run) anymore? Mmm. Pass.
Sadly, this team was built to win NOW. We jetiisoned several 1st rounders for Mitch and Mack (and other picks to trade up for guys like Shaheen). Had both proven to be superstars, I'd already have my hotel booked in Miami. With that, neither are playing at superstar level this year. I can honestly say that the defense and Mack are playing below their pay grade. However, I think a lot of why they've stopped going full bore is because they know that our QB is shit. I think I said this earlier, but why would you put you life and livelihood on the lie and go balls out only to watch Turdinsky fuck up and go 3 and out. So the question is does Cam change this team into a team that can actually win now? I do think his upside is way higher than Turdinsky's. But does he even make us a .500 team? The answer is no. So, no.
No one would consider it, save for maybe Patg. Wow. Surprising given where we are, especially as Mongo pointed out, in "win now" mode. Realistically what can we do for 2020? Yes, we'd all take Bridgewater. What if he commands too high a price? Dak? Same thing. This is my ignorance on the issue, but if Cam does get released doesn't that mean he's a free agent? We'd still have to do a lot of work to clear cap space but we're likely going to have to do that anyway for a few of the guys listed below, who we should all be considering: Cam Bridgewater Rivers Dalton Eli Dak Yeah, it sucks to be here again. But I really really don't want to see this window close without having taken a shot with a competent QB. We don't sign one of these guys it's going to be full rebuild mode in 2021-2022.
You answered your own question. We are going to have to clear the cap space anyway. You do it for Bridgewater not for Cam.
I'd actually take Eli over Cam. I'd go Dak, Bridgewater, Rivers, Dalton, Eli, Cam in order out of this list. Dak is a obviously a pipedream. Bridgewater should be realistic.
I'm with Blang in the sense that this team needs a QB now, and anyone who gives us even an average level of play would be very welcome. That said, I don't think Newton would mesh well with Nagy's offense. I don't get to watch much of him, so I may be wrong, but I think that has been part of his struggle in CAR over the last few years - they've been trying to push him into a mold that I don't think he quite fits, at times. And there are obviously the health issues, as well. If it was Cam or no one, I'd take Cam. And frankly, I'm not sold on Bridgewater. I haven't watched him this season, but the games in NO this year are the only in his career where he's had any real success. I'd be curious to watch the film and see if it's just a fluke (we see it all the time from QB's off the bench / just starting), if NO just has the right recipe for him, or if he's somehow become a legitimate QB. I've got plenty of time to do that before the offseason...
To me he is more in the style of Cutler as a passer, at least in his strengths. Great arm, can drill it home on deeper comeback routes or sideline outs. Not great at hitting guys in stride or the deep ball. Certainly not my ideal QB but better than almost anything we can get for 2020. If we know for sure he's healthy, and Bridgewater + Dak are unavailable, it would a huge mistake to not explore this possibility.
Newton has completed 59% of his passes for his career. He has a TD to INT rate that is less than 2 to 1. He's went north of 24 touchdowns in a season just once in his career. He's thrown double digit INT's in every season he's played. He's past 30 and has been sacked 291 times in his career and the injuries have built up. I don't know what anyone sees in him except that he isn't Mitch.
I don't think Bridgewater is any kind of savior or stud. But I think he'd be a good replacement to a failed project in Trubisky and would allow the organization to focus on winning now while use Bridgewater as a bridge to finding a legit franchise QB.
A lot of the guys on that list are past 30, past 35 even. His numbers are comparable to most of those guys on the list. Mainly he isn't Mitch. And he does have an MVP under his belt, the only one on that list to get that distinction.
A strong case can be made against each of these guys and yet they are all (when healthy) better than Mitch and if we tighten up the defense in 2020 there's no reason why we can't go on a deep playoff run with any of them.
Bridgewater is younger and posted numbers this season better than Cam of the past couple years. Rivers career numbers dwarf Newton's. I won't discuss the rest because they are either unattainable (Prescott) or should retire of be executed (Dalton, Manning).
