Wow. Now she was a strong woman. RIP Elizabeth II (born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom from 6 February 1952 until her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the second longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country.
Did you know that 25.21 million Americans whose ancestry originates wholly or partly in England self-identify as Anglo-American? It's a possibility that one of your ancestors did champion the House of Windsor. This is actually a weird experience for me. As long as the Queen has been alive she has been our Monarch (Not butterfly, in this case). I grew up in elementary school singing, "God Save our Queen" and then, "O Canada" which wasn't our official anthem until 1980. The origin of, "God save our Queen" likely dates back to the 17th century. Our current anthem was officially recognized only in 1980. The lyrics to "God Save our Queen" are understandably different but quaint, in a way. I remember standing outside of my school in 1965, with the student body, as the Union flag was lowered and the new Canadian flag was raised. We sang, "God Save our Queen" first, and then, "O Canada". God save our gracious Queen Long live our noble Queen God save the Queen Send her victorious Happy and glorious Long to reign over us God save the Queen O Lord our God arise Scatter her enemies And make them fall Confound their politics Frustrate their knavish tricks On Thee our hopes we fix God save us all Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pour Long may she reign May she defend our laws And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice God save the Queen Not in this land alone But be God's mercies known From shore to shore Lord make the nations see That men should brothers be And form one family The wide world over From every latent foe From the assassins blow God save the Queen O'er her thine arm extend For Britain's sake defend Our mother, prince, and friend God save the Queen.
I was making a Monty Python joke. But my dad is straight off the boat from Ireland, so I'm gonna guess that my family spent some time kissing the queen's feet. She just hasn't meant anything to my life, at all. I've never personally understood the fascination with the royals, but I don't begrudge anyone who does. I honestly didn't know that the Queen was considered Canada's queen. That's Florida education, for you. Thanks for teaching me something, baby!
Gawd. Holy smokes Lou, you've lost yer bloody marbles. I didn't catch the MP reference and I LOVE Monty Python! I've never been a fan of the royals either. It's just a bit of a shock to see the news. She ruled for 70 years. That's mind-boggling! So good luck to King Charles ...
Ha ha ha ... damnit you guys are funny. I swear to the powers that be that someday we are going to sit in a bar in Chicago somewhere, where you guys can keep harping on me face-to-face and we'll see how that works out for all of you ... NO SAMMICHES OR DRINKS FOR YOU LOT!
Yep very sad. They literally don't make them like that anymore. Imagine being 21years old and out of nowhere being told you now have to do this, it will consume your entire life and any plans you may have had for yourself are now over. I don't believe people today are selfless enough to do it. I'm not now and I sure as shit wasn't 20years ago. The tributes have flowed in from all over the globe, from world leaders and plebeians alike and its telling. Thats soft power like you can't buy. There is a funeral cortege bringing the Queen to Edinburgh as I type, where she will lay in state for I think a day or two at the Royal Mile next to Edinburgh Castle before being taken down to London. My wife, our eldest and I are gonna go and view the coffin and pay our respects tomorrow. Think it will be a long day in line, there will be many many 10s of thousands of people waiting to go in.
