Ben Roethlisberger unsure if he'll play beyond 2017
    Orr, Conor

Ben Roethlisberger laid out a compelling case for retirement during an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette while echoing some of the same end-of-the-road sentiments he expressed after 2016.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass drama queen.

I don't see how the guy contemplating retirement at the age of 35, given the blatant evidence of decreased quality and length of life in/from the sport all around him, is him being a "drama queen". Moreover, I would think Steelers fans would be holding onto him for dear life, considering they don't have anyone to succeed him, nor is finding a QB in the NFL an easy endeavor. But, hey, Steelers fans have always surprised me...

Because he's full of shit. He isn't going anywhere - just loves the attention. As he said to Kaboly... "Could we be having this conversation in 5 years? Yes."

Yeah no shit. We know you're not playing forever. You're 35 years old. But no one believes he's cutting a check back to the Steelers next year for 12.4M for the accelerated signing bonus he signed in 2015 that they would be due upon his early retirement.

And I don't believe he's gonna write one back for 6.2M the year after that. He's an attention whore and you don't get any attention sitting on your couch at home. He's not going anywhere.

He misses the attention he got from Millage Ga

They made a good point at the end of the article, that this is also a way Ben is putting extra pressure on the rest of the team to win another super bowl because every year could be his last.

I hope it works for the better and doesn't just become a distraction. I say he plays until the end of his contract and hopefully they win at least one more.

HE has made a crap ton of money and has a growing Family. While he does indeed play the part of Drama Queen at times odd are he is being upfront about the possibility of walking away.

So you believe he'll write a check back to the Steelers for 12.4M?

And why would he do that?

Probably because that is what he would owe the Steeler's for terminating his contract early.

The Steelers can just let him keep it or a portion but to do that they would forfeit that much in a cap space penalty if I'm not mistaken.

I think Ben loves the attention. You don't hear Eli Manning or Philip Rivers talking about retiring.

Because that's how it works. If you sign a 5 year contract extension with a signing bonus and elect to quit after 3 seasons you are required to pay back the prorated portion of that bonus to the team. Ben's signing bonus was 31M (6.2M per season against the cap) in 2015. If he quits with two years left the Steelers are entitled to 12.4M in repayment that they then can use to sign other players (not to mention I'm gonna guess the Rooney's like money).

The Rooney's are all about precedent. It drives their decision making (i.e. never negotiating contracts during the season, etc.) Even if in their hearts they wanted to just send Ben off and thank him for his services they couldn't do it because they would open themselves up to the possibiltiy that others would accept large signing bonuses and not fulfill their deals. And the recent trend of guys retiring early would only put more pressure on them to get out ahead of future issues.

And yet just because they let Ben do it would not mean they would have to let others do it

Eli has to try and get one more ring so he can up his brother at the dinner table and Rivers has 8 kids he wants to go to work.

Certainly possible but considering you didn't even understand the process I'm gonna guess this is not a well thought out conclusion, instead a knee jerk reaction designed to defend your previous knee jerk reaction.
