Not what I wanted to read before bedtime. Not exactly a name I have faith in, so far. Connor Bedard had to get hurt right as the season ends. Can't even watch Chicago hockey.
Well, I'm not expecting anything from Halas Hall today other than maybe Getsy getting the sack. Shame because Jim Harbaugh is coming to the NFL next season and this would have been a golden chance to bring him in. For 20 years Michigan couldn't beat OSU and even in the first half of his tenure there but he's totally turned it around and they are the better team now. He would do the same for us vs Packers. For the possible Fields trade, I don't think we should accept anything less than a 2nd. Didn't the Jets get that for Sam Darnold?
If I'm Poles I am calling up the Broncos, Seahawks, Rams, and Steelers and asking for their first round pick. You might not get it but those teams are likely looking for a new QB and all will be out of the running for a top guy this draft.
While ownership and many in the media will spin this season as a success, what did we accomplish outside of getting lucky that Carolina was the worst team in the NFL? Same question at QB we had coming into the season, no real progress was made but no real regression either. Same inability to beat good teams, we were 1-6 against playoff teams this year which was the same exact record we had last year against playoff teams. We failed to make the playoffs ourselves. We won just enough games to not fire the coaching staff, who we all know sucks. Yeah the D improved, particularly the secondary and the presence of Sweat helped the pass rush. But that's it. It didn't translate into any real big wins other than maybe the Detriot game and even then the blown lead against the Lions the first time around is more telling of this team than the later win. No, this season was a failure by nearly every measure.
So true. I'm tired of the Eberflus improved the defense narrative. Poles did by adding talent. Eberflus hasn't moved the needle in my opinion. There's good talent at every level of the defense. They should get takeaways and have good games. We saw yesterday what Eberflus is. He brought almost no pressure. He coached scared. When he had the Packers backed up to the 2 yard line in the 4th quarter he had a chance to bring extra pressure and turn the game on it's side and he did nothing and the defense gives up an easy big play. That's who he is as a coach. When a good coaching decision is needed...he falls flat. Now is a perfect time to restart with a new HC, new OC, and new QB. But we all know this organization will fail.
This is just it man, this is what I was saying. They want me to buy this bullshit improvement narrative, then it would HAVE to have resulted in a win against the Packers yesterday. And maybe worst of all the *score* was close but the game never really was, Eberflus' vaunted defensive improvement resulted in Love looking like a HoF QB.....AGAIN. "The defense only gave up 17 points!" - yeah and how many hundreds of yards of offense? They are nowhere near the top of the list, but that was also pretty fucking far from a dominant performance. "Oh you can't judge based on one game, hurr durr" as the fucking morons on reddit are throwing around, no, it's not one game, it's the *capstone* to what this team is. It could have been a statement we are turning the corner, instead it was, "listen guys, we really suck and those were inflated wins against the dregs of the NFL". The Packers suck and will get fucking stomped by the Cowboys next week, they are a mid team at best and we shit the bed as we always do. What has me beyond pissed is you would think, eventually, dumb luck or any given sunday would give you a fucking win against your arch rival. Even the goddamn Jets finally beat the Patriots. And as you guys know pre-game I was on the kool aid that we had a chance. More the homer me. My buddy is texting me all day, "firings are happening!" Dude, it's not happening here. It's Getsy AT MOST and that might not even be today.
It's disheartening because this offseason when we know Jim Harbaugh is going to be available and who we could pair with JJ McCarthy or Drake Maye or Caleb Williams or you name it. Harbaugh turned Alex Smith's career around entirely in 2011 after Smith was a complete bust. He made Kaepernick into a Pro Bowler and nearly won the Super Bowl. If the priority of ownership was to actually win games, they would do everything possible to get Harbaugh to Chicago. Every game against them is always such an indictment of our coaching vs theirs. We were totally unprepared for the week 1 game, we were totally overmatched yesterday. And the truth is this is how we look against all well-coached teams, not just the Packers. But it's always most painfully on display against the Packers. It's far from the worst loss we've had to them but I go back to 2017 when Erin was hurt and their shitty backup who was out of the league after a year led an efficient win against us in Soldier Field. Like even in the opportunities when we look better on paper we can't even luck into a win. That's coaching.
Cuz you know Georgie is going to praise the culture Flus has established. Clearly the players haven't bought in.
All the good things this team did this season were mostly based on talent and athleticism. A lot of the bad things this team did this season can be directly attributed to bad coaching. So I understand letting Poles continue to steer the ship. I can't understand at all sticking with the coaches.
Perfectly said. Talent is there, just need the right leadership/coaching to succeed, that goes for every team. Is the talent top notch, some is some aint, always room for improvement, but if you take what your given and can make the best of it, things get real good real fast. Just passing by. Hope the best for you and the Bears community. BTW - draft smart, period... good luck with that.
Yep, I'd throw the Raiders in too. They hire Josh McDanielses, they're def dumb enough to bite. And cowardly.
My gut tells me the odds of Fields going there may have decreased now Smith has been fired. A new coach will have time on his side, which Smith didn't. Time to draft a QB top10 and have him develop. Smith didnt have time for that even if they kept him. He would've needed to win next year which lends itself to a more vet player who's already got a level of experience and better chance to hit the ground running. But if the Falcons have bigger ambitions i think a swing for the fences move to #1 would also be interesting : ))))
Since it seems clear they are running it back (I mean, today is the day if you were launching someone to do it, because then you're part of the pile and no one singles you out), I actually really hope they DON'T give us another press conference like the other one. While it was a gold mine for soundbites for the Hoge and Jahns podcast, it was embarrassing. Maybe this is all subterfuge, and they are waiting for Harbaugh to win tonight and then we get him. It's not, but it could be.
Why do they keep delaying? This is stupid. DC, LA Chargers, and Carolina are already setting up interviews with GM candidates and now HC candidates. The bears are proudly putting themselves in the 'dunce' corner, big cone hat and all--where Flus is a lame duck, where maybe they replace Getsy with a lame duck OC, meaning a short list of Frank Reich or Jonocko getting a promotion from QB coach. Frank Reich got a #1 overall pick at QB and couldn't tailor an offense to him in Carolina, he also couldn't squeeze anything out of Brissett, old man Rivers, or his boy Carson Wentz in Indy, so what'll be different here? Are you going to call up retreads now coaching in HS because they're idiots who burn bridges like Greg Roman or Adam Gase? More importantly, it'll be 3 straight drafted QBs (theoretically) where there's 2 coaches/2 different playbooks to learn in 2 years. Quintessential bears. When you wonder why this team can't beat the packers or hasn't won a playoff game in over 10 years, its not hard to figure out. I get the argument for keeping Flus to a point, but its not enough to save him. I can empathize that the dude was put in a no-win situation year 1, with a roster given to him by Poles worthy of getting the #1 pick. And it wasn't until the middle of the 2nd season that you got him a little help at pass rusher and DT (3T which his scheme desperately needs), by emergence of Gervon Dexter (who I still argue isn't a 3 tech, switch back to a 3-4 and let him be the 2 gap 5 tech and now you're cooking) at times. And yes the team got better. But coaching to elevate your talent? That's where Flus failed. Yesterday Green Bay showed the entire league what the bears defense looks like when you take away Montez Sweat. Did they even punt once? And now, should you run it back with Flus--he's going to have to find a DC and probably an OC, and exactly what good candidates pop into anybody's heads for a '1 year hope/pray for a miracle?' You're not going to get anybody good. Flus talks about "passion for the game and enthusiasm for the game." Well fuck you, pal. Passion and enthusiasm are why you're sitting at home in January, and two division rivals are in the playoffs and you're talking about 'what ifs' if you didn't blow several games late. Time for new priorities that include 'winning games' and 'getting in the playoffs.' And you can't do that with der Flus.
