10 Most Penalized Ravens

Discussion in 'Baltimore Ravens' started by Leksington, Jan 13, 2014.

  1. Shamelessly stolen from ESPN (written by Jamison Hensly:

The Baltimore Ravens committed 112 penalties in 2013, the sixth-most in the NFL. Only the Seattle Seahawks (128 penalties), St. Louis Rams (123), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (121), Denver Broncos (117) and Oakland Raiders (116) were flagged more than Baltimore.

Here's a look at the top 10 most-penalized players on the Ravens this season:

    CB JIMMY SMITH
    8 penalties for 79 yards
Defensive pass interference (three times), defensive holding (three), illegal contact (one) and personal foul (one)

    LB ELVIS DUMERVIL
    8 penalties for 57 yards
Offside (four times), unnecessary roughness (one), facemask (one), neutral zone infraction (one) and roughing the passer

    G A.Q. SHIPLEY
    8 penalties for 50 yards
False start (four times), facemask (one), illegal block above waist (one), holding (one), illegal use of hands (one)

    G MARSHAL YANDA
    7 penalties for 45 yards
False start (five times), illegal use of hands (one), holding (one).

    LB COURTNEY UPSHAW
    6 penalties for 69 yards
Unnecessary roughness (three times), holding on special teams (two), roughing the passer (one)

    OT MICHAEL OHER
    6 penalties for 45 yards
False start (three times), holding (three)

    WR TORREY SMITH
    6 penalties for 45 yards
False start (four times), pass interference (one), unnecessary roughness (one)

    CB LARDARIUS WEBB
    6 penalties for 43 yards
Illegal contact (two), offside (one), horse-collar tackle (one), holding (one), personal foul (one)

    G KELECHI OSEMELE
    5 penalties for 29 yards
False start (two), holding (one), facemask (one), illegal formation (one)

    S JAMES IHEDIGBO
    5 penalties for 27 yards
Holding on special teams (two), horse-collar tackle (one), illegal contact (one) and unnecessary roughness (one)

  2. I found it interesting to note that AQ Shipley, Marshal Yanda, and Torrey Smith had more false starts than Michael Oher. Over a full season Osemele would have outpaced Oher for false starts.

    Interesting, isn't it?
When I posted this website on the "State of the Ravens press conference" board, I was surprised Oher wasn't the most penalized O-lineman. And he hasn't been for the past two years (2011 and 2012)

    2010 on the other hand............

Oher has improved measurably in that area and, in fact, I'd be interested in seeing how many penalty yards he cost the other team by moving when they encroached prior to the snap this year.

Amazing that Osemele had that many penalties with the minimal amount of games that he played. He started 7 games with one of those being against the Dolphins where I don't think he even made it past the second series.

I know of at least a half dozen times that he personally got the Ravens an extra 5 yards for defensive encroachment when he moved after they did. Oher won't be a superstar stud Tackle but he IS very solid as a RT. I still don't believe he will be back in a Ravens uniform however. Mike Wagner was drafted to take his place.

This was my first thought. All those penalties by KO and he didn't even make it half a season.

Second thought was that Shipley out flagged Oher and he didn't play a full season either.

Third thought, I'm not surprised with Yanda. He was flagged a lot. I think he had two or three false starts in one game.

    More interesting facts:

    Eugene Monroe - 4 penalties - 2 False starts & 2 holding
Bryant McKinnie - 2 Penalties - 2 Personal fouls (both in the same game against Houston)
Gino Gradkowski - 4 Penalties - All holding

So, if you add them all up, the LT position committed 6 total penalties.

The starting OL committed 36 out of the 112 (32%) of all the penalties in 2013.

This had to be one of the most undisciplined teams (both offense and defense) and possibly the most undisciplined OL's I have ever seen.

Here is a link to the penalties:

That one surprises me because I know he was called for at least two of those three false starts in the first game against Pittsburgh...hard to believe that he only had one other false start all season! He constantly looks like he is jumping early...and I know that many times its just good timing...but I would have thought he'd have at least double that in false starts for the year.

  9. These numbers are enlightening. And it seemed like those flags typically put us in 3rd and long. For a unit that can't run block, you'd think there'd be more holding.

  10. If the o-line committed 30% of all penalties, I wonder what the avg is around the league.
