Kirk Cousins reported to Flowery Branch for the start of voluntary workouts.

Good move by him for the PR reasons. The team isn't likely to release him outright just to get stuck paying his guaranteed salary and watch him play on the cheap for some other team. If he wants out, it's going to be a trade. And that means he needs to show every other team in the league that he's all about doing the team thing, so that when someone else gets hurt that team won't hesitate to pull the trigger and grab Cousins. Showing up for the non-contact voluntary workouts is a good start.

Meanwhile, Atlanta has signed backup quarterback Easton Stick. And there was much rejoicing...

The Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford agreed to continue their partnership for 2025 months ago.

But now, details are finally emerging of Stafford’s renegotiated contract.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Stafford will earn $44 million in the coming season, with $4 million already paid and the remaining $40 million fully guaranteed.

Stafford, 37, is set to continue going year-to-year with Los Angeles. But Rapoport notes that if the quarterback is on the roster at the start of free agency in 2026, he’ll lock in another $40 million. Where Stafford was previously set to make $58 million in 2025 and 2026, he’s now set to make $84 million.

In 2024, Stafford completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 3,762 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He then completed 63.4 percent of his throws for 533 yards with four touchdowns and no picks in two postseason games.

 

I suspect Brock Purdy paid attention to this Stafford deal as he and Stafford had similar stats (Purdy completed 66 percent of his passes for 3,864 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions).

 

Yeah, to me, $40M per year seems really high for 20 TDs...

18 QBs had 20 TDs or more in the NFL in 2024. Tua had 19, but he threw 100+ less passes than the majority of the field in front of him with 20+ TDs.

At what point is an average QB paid the average wages?

Carr has retired.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Carr’s retirement comes with an agreement regarding his contract.

In a nutshell, he’ll give up $30 million in fully-guaranteed pay. That was his base salary for 2025, which the Saints opted to convert to a mostly-prorated payment in March.

Carr will keep a $10 million roster bonus he earned in March. Also, the Saints will not seek recovery of the remaining allocation of his $28.5 million signing bonus, which he received in 2023.

Carr could have undergone shoulder surgery, not played this year, pocketed the $30 million, and made a decision about his future at some point down the road.

This path allows him to delay shoulder surgery — perhaps indefinitely — and to avoid the process of recovery and rehab.

Even without the $30 million he had been guaranteed to make this year, the $10 million roster bonus pushes him above $200 million in career earnings.

Brock Purdy, 49ers agree to five-year contract extension

At long last, 49ers Brock Purdy is going to be paid a market rate for his services.

According to multiple reports, Purdy and San Francisco have agreed to a five-year, $265 million extension, making the final pick of the 2022 draft one of the highest-paid players in league history.

NFL Media reports Purdy will receive $181 million in total guarantees, including $165.05 million in the first three years of a contract that runs through the 2030 season.

Purdy’s average annual value of $53 million puts him just above Justin Herbert’s $52.5 million, ties him with Jared Goff, and is just behind Tua Tagovailoa’s $53.1 million.

From team owner Jed York on down, it was clear that the 49ers intended to give Purdy a lucrative deal this offseason. Purdy had noted that he didn’t want much drama when it came to the contract, and his attendance at the club’s voluntary offseason program underlined that stance.

After emerging as one of the best bargains in the sport by leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game as a rookie and the Super Bowl in his second season, he’ll now be paid as a franchise QB going forward.

In his three seasons, Purdy has garnered a 23-13 record in his 36 starts. He’s completed 67.5 percent of his career passes for 9,518 yards with 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.

In six postseason games, Purdy has completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 1,343 yards with six TDs and one pick.

Art Rooney II: Steelers will wait “a little while longer” for Aaron Rodgers

Steelers owner Art Rooney II said at the start of April that the team would not wait forever for Aaron Rodgers to sign and he had a chance to address where things stand with the still unsigned quarterback at the end of this week’s league meetings.

Rooney said late last month that Rodgers wants to come to Pittsburgh, but Rodgers has not made any public pronouncements about his intentions and Rooney was asked on Wednesday about how long the team is willing to wait for him to make a commitment. Rooney’s response went back to his early April answer.

“A little while longer. I’ll say the same thing,” Rooney said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

The Steelers start OTAs next week and they run through June 5. A three-day mandatory minicamp that ends their offseason program wraps up on June 10, so Rooney and the Steelers can’t wait too much longer if they want to see Rodgers do some work with the team ahead of training camp this summer.

After reading this this evening, Im going to cut Rodgers a little slack... if this is the case, I hope the best for him and his family, but a little hint or transparency would have went a long way.

During an interview with Joe Rogan on Wednesday, Rodgers said that there are many people close to him who are currently dealing with cancer.

"I've been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer," Rodgers told Rogan.

The quarterback previously hinted at issues in his personal life during an interview on the "Pat McAfee Show" back in April, as a reason why he had not signed with a team.

"I have a couple people in my inner, inner circle who are battling some difficult stuff," Rodgers said. "So, I have a lot of things that are taking my attention and have since the beginning of January away from football. That's where I have been focusing most of my attention on."

Terry Bradshaw calls Steelers potentially signing Aaron Rodgers “a joke”

It’s safe to say Terry Bradshaw won’t be offering to allow Aaron Rodgers to wear No. 12 with the Steelers. It’s even safer to say Rodgers wouldn’t accept.

Bradshaw was blunt, as he often is, regarding the Steelers’ decision to wait indefinitely on Rodgers.

“That’s a joke,” Bradshaw said on 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock, Arkansas (via CBSSports.com). “That is just to me is a joke. What are you gonna do? Bring him in for one year? Are you kidding me? . . . . That guy needs to stay in California. Go somewhere and chew on bark and whisper to the gods out there.”

Bradshaw believes the Steelers should have given 2022 first-rounder Kenny Pickett more of a chance.

“I liked Kenny Pickett,” Bradshaw said “I liked him at Pitt. I know him, I know what he’s like. And when they got him to Pittsburgh, here’s what they didn’t do. They didn’t protect him . . . they didn’t get him an offensive line. They wanted to run the football, but they didn’t have an offensive line that could protect, and they didn’t have weapons. He had no wide receivers to speak of.

“And then they throw a kid in there for two years and you’ve got an offense that doesn’t fit and doesn’t work, and they can’t run because their offensive line’s not even good enough for a run blocking team. And therefore they say Pickett was a failure. He wasn’t a failure, the Steelers were a failure.”
