What's he done in camp that is bad though? We see glimpses of camp and then hear reports about it. As a fan it's really hard to place any kind of judgment on training camp. On a side note I don't really think the DJ Moore deal means you can't also sign Allen if he does have a really good season. You can afford two WRs...and Moore's contract will run down right around the time Odunze is due a pay day if he pans out the way we all want him to. So in theory, if all goes well, this works out great for the Bears. You can let DJ walk in 3 to 4 seasons when he's older and not hamper yourself with the cap at all.
The question is unless this is a Bears offense the likes of which we've never seen before, and it quite possibly could be, how many targets would it take to keep everyone satisfied? DJ has been advocating for Allen too and says “And I mean, I’m going to leave his number out of it. But I think we can get it done.” So maybe his number isn't so out of line.
Reports have been up and down. Getting the ball stripped when you can't even touch the QB, and some int's. I guess I just need to relax, smoke a joint, and embrace the reality of the situation of being a rookie QB.
Man I can't believe there's a game tonight. Definitely not ready for football, I want to enjoy the last month of summer before this team ruins my fall. Caleb not playing tonight also plays a factor in my unpreparedness. That said, if we are healthy I see us winning a minimum of 10 games. Yes, a minimum of 10 wins if Caleb, the o-line, WRs, and D avoid injury. We are better than the Vikings. We are going to be better than the Lions. We'll get swept by the Packers but fuck them and their fans. Lastly, go get Matthew Judon!!
Fuck me, blang has the Bears at a minimum of 10 wins? Ev buddy, time to get excited! Yeah, heh, until the weather delay. Rypien looked great, which means we are watching pre-preseason football. I don't love the new kickoff rule, but we'll see how it looks at the end of the year, when kickers start dialing in the "landing zone", should result in more return attempts at least.
Rypien is probably the only noteable guy who played decently. Collin Johnson looked impressive the passes he actually held onto. The two wide open TDs were nice, but let's pump the brakes on the hype for this dude. One hit him in the hands with nobody within 5 feet of him and he dropped it and the first pass to him of the game where he tried to catch with his body and dropped that one too. The new kickoff rule was absolutely nonsensical. I love how the rule is as simple as 'kicking team tacklers have to keep a foot on the line and dont move/pursue until the KR catches the ball' and the bears jumped offsides twice. Then, they force a holder onto the field, and make him run off after he holds the kick off. That Aussie kid sure can boogie after holding that kickoff. The best was at the beginning of the rain delay the reporter asks Devin Hester what he thinks of the new rule and you can tell by his face/expression that he hates it. Tyler Scott had his head taken off on one of the returns. Why was Khalil Herbert taking snaps with the 5th stringers in the 2nd quarter? Why was Khalil Herbert being asked to run the ball in a meaningless preseason game period? Cant help but think the plan now is run him into the ground and cut him loose next year so Poles can find another running back. Either Roschon Johnson looks a hell of a lot faster or Houston's back ups are molasses-levels of slow. #45, #92, #52 and #47 on defense I don't need to see any more of. Didn't even bother remembering their names except 1, but when Davis Mills is outrunning you/juking you out of a play in the backfield, you aren't cut for this level. #45, who I remember because his name is 'Amen,' brought back great Buster Skrine memories, where Davis Mills immediately identified him as the useless defender and the guy to keep targeting because he's 3 steps slower than the #3 TE, and guys who wont make Houston's WR corps their first 2 drives that ended in points. Not a good day for rooting for youth guys. Austin Booker #94 was blocked by bums in the 2nd. Keith Randolph, the DT from Illinois a lot of people liked when he was paired with Johnny Newton--was also blocked. I've hit the 'panic' button on DE2/DE depth, but as usual, I'm the idiot and Poles knows what he's doing.
He did but it's probably his audition for a backup role with another team. Based on what I saw (and the shit condition of the turf) I don't know how it was "safer" than the old school kickoff rules. The league needs to go back that, period. Yeah I was wondering this too although my takeaway was that his roster spot for this year might be in jeopardy. Also I'm gonna be livid if either Pettis or VJJ end up on the 53. Speaking of VJJ where was he? I assumed he'd get reps but apparently he was given the starter treatment.
The best part of last night was the lack of screen passes. Nice to see passes past the line of scrimmage no matter who was throwing them.
Same thing was running through my brain last night. Only thing I can think of was they're hopeful maybe someone sees Herbert and picks up the phone and offers a 5th round pick for him. Anyone catch the soundbite this past week when he said 1 v 1 no one can stop him?
It was surprising how much zip he had on his passes, not what I'm used to seeing in preseason at all. But I said pre-preseason for a reason, it is beyond meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Was fun to watch though. Think the Bears keep 3 QBs? There is that new rule they can designate someone as an inactive/emergency 3rd QB, but we'd still have to keep him on the 53. If he keeps it up, I could see a potential trade for a 7th rounder flier or something from a desperate team. There's nothing like NFL GMs/Coaches and the "I CAN FIX HIM" mentality, heh. Oh man, it was 47, I think, lined up at DT(?), that ran up the gap like he was playing DE, a million miles behind the play, on that one play where Mills had literally no one in front of him and Tom Brady amounts of time to throw. It was shockingly bad, heh. Man was that ever a lowlight of the shortened night, Pettis catching the punt with his body and letting is squirt right out onto the turf. I get it was raining, but good grief man. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. VJJ I hate to break it to you, if they gave him the night off, he's probably as close to a lock as they come. Remember he's a Poles draft choice.
I had to work today so I didn’t get to see it live. But how great was it to see Mongo go into the HOF. Kicked me right in the feels.
