Draft experts are nothing more than glorified weathermen…. Their hit rate is atrocious and considering how much teams invest into the draft, surprised there’s so many misses, especially in the 1st round, but I guess that’s why certain teams are consistently picking at the top of the draft…. But if you hit big on a draft, it can turn your team around in a hurry
Man that was Rough in 2021 and how it turned out, it really is a crap shoot just hope you get lucky find a franchise QB
Not to mention picking his brain about the Ravens and the fact it keeps him from resigning with the Ravens weakening their QB room while boosting their own. They want to be ready this year as opposed to last year.
They went 1-1 against them last year. I’m not sure we should complain about that… They have built this team to compete with the other AFC North teams. For the near future, the team with the least injuries will probably take the division.
On a side note, an opinion of mine - The contract offer to Joe Flacco was a slap a crossed his face, something the Browns may regret. Maybe they didnt forgive him for the double pick 6 thing. The Colts signed Flacco for nearly the same amount they paid for Jamison Winston.
Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson appears set to take another step in his recovery from shoulder surgery. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Watson may begin light throwing again as soon as Tuesday. Watson has been rehabbing in Los Angeles after undergoing surgery in late November for the displaced fracture in his right shoulder socket. Cleveland tight end David Njoku and Watson’s private QB coach Quincy Avery flew out to Southern California to work with Watson this week, with workouts to be conducted at UCLA. While the Browns have signed Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley to complement a QB room that included Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Watson is still expected to participate in at least some aspects of the offseason program — if not all of it. But Cleveland does not want to rush Watson’s return, which is why the team has added to its QBs like it has. Even if he’s limited in the offseason program, Watson is expected to be ready for training camp. Watson, 28, has played just 12 games for Cleveland over the last two seasons. He’s completed 60 percent of his throws for 2,217 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. PFT
Mike Macdonald doesn’t foresee a QB competition, calling Geno Smith the starter Twice since becoming the Seahawks’ head coach, Mike Macdonald declined to commit to Geno Smith as his starting quarterback. On Saturday, Macdonald said he does not anticipate a quarterback competition between Smith and Sam Howell. “l don’t,” Macdonald told Tom Pelissero of NFL Media. “I’ve talked to Geno about it. Very confident in Geno. Geno’s going to be our starter. Sam knows he’s going to be our backup, but Sam is a great young player, and he’s got a really bright future that we believe in.” Smith, 33, started five games in the seven seasons from 2015-21 before beating out Drew Lock for the starting job in 2022, replacing Russell Wilson. He has gone 17-15 the past two seasons as the starter, throwing 50 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. “That resonates with a lot of our stories, having gone through a lot of trials and tribulations and finding his stride here in the last few years,” Macdonald said of Smith. “And then going against him, obviously his track record the last couple years and the stats he’s been able to put up, his poise, his leadership, obviously his capability throwing the football, and our relationship is just getting started to grow.” Lock left in free agency for a chance to compete for the Giants’ starting job, and the Seahawks gave up third-round and fifth-round picks for Howell and fourth- and sixth-rounders. Howell started all 17 games for Washington last season and threw 21 touchdowns and a league-high 21 interceptions. The Seahawks like his upside, but Smith is the starter for now. PFT
This is something I've hit in conversations during a few of our collaborative mock drafts. (Heads up that we should be planning this year's mock very soon, so stay tuned.) The track record for those top five pick, can't-miss phenoms is indeed atrocious. And the TV draft experts have been laughable going back to Kiper absolutely blowing his top because the Colts took some bozo named Marshall Faulk instead of Kiper's designated mega-stud Heath Shuler. To put it in perspective, here are all of the QBs who were taken in the first five overall selections in the last 15 drafts. These are the absolute can't-miss studs who are guaranteed to turn your franchise around just by signing their contracts. There are 23 names on the list. Count for yourselves how many you think were hits vs misses as first round picks for their initial teams / initial contracts: Bryce Young C.J. Stroud Anthony Richardson Trevor Lawrence Zach Wilson Trey Lance Joe Burrow Tua Tagovailoa Kyler Murray Baker Mayfield Sam Darnold Mitch Trubisky Jared Goff Carson Wentz Jameis Winston Marcus Mariota Blake Bortles Andrew Luck Robert Griffin III Cam Newton Sam Bradford Matthew Stafford Mark Sanchez
Ten of those QBs are ones you would use on your own team. The others aren’t worth the contract paper they signed. Let alone the paycheck they received.
Fields will never be more than a journeyman QB at best, so he will fit right in in the Steel City that has only had 2 good QB's in the last 40 years in Bradshaw and Big Ben.
He will be a good QB2 cause he will get some good coaching, and the PRESSURE will be off him its up to him now
It’s a unique situation. The Bears made the correct decision to move on From Fields and Draft Caleb Williams. Now they have to do something they have been very bad at and that is to set the rookie QB up for success. Fields was a very popular player both in house and among fans. The pressure will be on Williams to show everyone the right decision was made. That will be hard enough with Fields in Pittsburgh never mind if he was in the same locker room. So you take a little less now to ease the transition. The inept Bears front office is about to use the first pick in the draft, that they got in a trade, on one of the safest(yes I know there are no guarantees but) QB picks in recent memory and put him in maybe the best situation a first pick in the draft QB has ever been put in. Oh and they still have the ninth pick too in a draft that is going to see very good talent drop do to a QB heavy draft.
Having that 9th pick is golden. Draft Wiliams and land him Odunze at 9th is a popular trend right now on several mocks and if they decide to address the defense with that 2nd pick, they could get a huge help at Edge with Verse or Latu at #9. I cant see how the Bears or anyone can possibly screw this up, its nearly a fool-proof situation.
This feels like a prime spot for the Bears to drop down after watching the Falcons take Dallas right ahead of them. Not a far move, but with a team looking to get ahead of the Jets, who may still be looking to add WR and OT after FA.
IMO the three most important positions are: 1. QB 2a. Someone to protect the QB 2b. Someone to disrupt the opposing QB There should be an elite option at 2a and 2b available at pick 9. I would much rather that than another weapon in offense.
Even if that weapon on offense is rated as a much higher prospect than oline/dline? When you say “elite”, do you mean as far as 2024 ranked prospects or all time? I agree there will be some pass rushers available. This is a nice draft for pass rushers, it’s a deep class. However… I don’t believe any of them are highly “elite”. I also understand all Bears fans know they need to improve the OLine in order to improve on offense. I personally just believe that improvement needs to come in the interior of the line. While getting a Joe Alt would improve your team, it wouldn’t improve it as much as getting a Jackson Powers-Johnson. If that is your main goal, improving the oline, my suggestion would be to trade down from 9 and get a player like this that will immediately improve the interior of the line. The moves in free agency this far give you depth, but not improvement at the C position. If the value of a trade down isn’t there, and an elite WR (Nabers/Odunze) is, personally I think that is the best move long term. Williams is a guy that is going to need elite talent to succeed, no different than Fields. Without it, they will be looking for his replacement in 3 years.
I made more money than Aaron Rodgers last year... barely. Every NFL player is eligible for performance-based pay. And, apparently, every player who played in 2023 got a check. The player getting the lowest among played only four snaps before rupturing his Achilles tendon. Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers received $81.14 in performance-based pay. PFT
