Sam Howell will enter the offseason program as Washington’s QB1 PFT has confirmed a report from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports that Sam Howell will enter the offseason program as the Commanders’ first-string quarterback. However, this does not mean that Howell will be the Week One starter. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Howell will start the offseason as the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart. Although the team has informed a couple of candidates for the vacant offensive coordinator position that Howell is the guy for now, it remains an evaluation process — and Howell has to ultimately win the job. The team will be discussing other quarterback options as well, we’re told. But, for now, Howell will be the top quarterback when the offseason program opens. Can things change? Yes. There will be many veteran quarterback options this year, and there will be various dominoes that fall. Unlike past years, however, the Commanders have the luxury of an in-house option, reducing the necessity to find a new quarterback. And there are real benefits to rolling with a player on his rookie contract. Having Howell under a fifth-year slotted deal for the next three seasons allows the team to devote resources to other areas of the roster, and to keep their own players who become eligible for new deals.
What does it mean “5th year slotted deal”, is this assuming a franchise tag following his rookie contract?
Report: Ravens plan to play both Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown at QB tonight The Ravens have not named their quarterback for tonight’s playoff game against the Bengals. Perhaps because both of the quarterbacks who will be active tonight are going to play. With Lamar Jackson out, the Ravens plan to play both Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown at quarterback against the Bengals, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Huntley is officially listed as questionable with shoulder and wrist injuries, but there’s little doubt that he’s going to play. The question is how much he’ll play, and how much playing time will go to Brown, who started last week’s loss to the Bengals. The Ravens went 8-4 with Jackson starting this season, but they were just 2-2 in the games Huntley started, and they lost the only game Brown started. Jackson’s knee injury derailed Baltimore’s season, and it’s going to be tough for them to upset the Bengals in Cincinnati tonight with a Huntley-Brown quarterback rotation. PFT
Mike Vick to Lamar Jackson: “Put a brace on it, let’s go” As the Ravens prepare to face the Bengals on Sunday night, they’ll do it without starting quarterback Lamar Jackson. Saturday on Fox, a former NFL starting quarterback had some pointed words for Jackson. Mike Vick had this to say about Jackson’s reluctance to play with a PCL sprain in his knee: “It’s the playoffs, you’re three games away. Put a brace on it. Get it going. Put a brace on it, let’s go. . . . I played a whole season with a torn MCL.” During the same segment, former Saints coach Sean Payton expressed disagreement with Jackson’s decision to go public with his injury status, adding that Payton is “hearing grumblings” from the building, and that there are “teammates” who believe his “process has been slower than expected.” Payton added that, if he were the coach, Jackson wouldn’t even be on the sideline with a knee injury that keeps him from playing. “With a lower body injury, he’s going to be up in the press box, he’s not going to be on the field for me,” Payton said. Jackson may never be on the field again for the Ravens. Payton predicted that Jackson will be elsewhere in 2023. It’s a feeling that definitely is beginning to spread throughout the league. PFT
Calais Campbell on Lamar Jackson: You can’t let a guy like him go After Sunday night’s loss to the Bengals, Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins said that he believes the team would have won with a healthy Lamar Jackson at quarterback and the theme at the team’s facility on Monday remained supportive of Jackson. Jackson missed the last six games of the season with a knee injury and many drew links between that absence and his lack of a contract beyond this season, but defensive end Calais Campbell called that “outside noise” and said the team knows Jackson “put the work in” to get back. Campbell also said that he thinks the team would be crazy to let Jackson go. “You can’t let a guy like him go,” Campbell said, via the team’s website. “I know it’s football, and there’s always some new exciting toy, new exciting kid that has potential to go out there and be great. But this is a for-sure, a known. You know Lamar Jackson is an incredible player. I think it’s in the best interests of the Ravens’ organization to give him a long-term contract, make him our guy.” Left tackle Ronnie Stanley said he has “full faith that they’re going to work something out” that keeps Jackson in the fold this offseason and the path that the Ravens take to dealing with Jackson’s contract will be the biggest offseason storyline in Baltimore. QB Jalen Hurts is "feeling good" ahead of the Eagles Divisional Round matchup versus the Giants, per head coach Nick Sirianni. Hurts suffered a right shoulder injury during Philadelphia's Week 15 win over Chicago. The injury kept Hurts out for two games, including the team's last matchup versus the Cowboys. However, Hurts was able to come back for the Eagles final regular-season game against the Giants. Hurts is also even feeling better than he did for that game, Sirianni added.
From the never ending speculation files... The news from Tennessee on Tuesday was that 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon has become the Titans’ G.M. Then came an interesting P.S. 49ers quarterback Trey Lance posted on his Instagram story a photo of Carthon. Beneath the image were a trio of fingers-crossed emojis. Whatever Lance’s intent, it’s reasonable to wonder whether Lance has his fingers crossed in the hopes that Carthon will, in his new job, trade for Lance. Even if that’s not the message Lance intended to send, people will assume it’s what he meant. And, frankly, it would be hard to blame Lance for wanting out. They went all in to get him in 2021, devoting three first-round picks and a third-round pick to the acquisition of Lance. The expectations and the pressure became immense. And it feels as if he’s never fully been embraced. From sticking with Jimmy Garoppolo in 2021 to keeping Garoppolo around in 2022 to the obvious implications of the emergence of Brock Purdy, who could blame Lance for wanting out? The Titans may be in the market for a quarterback in 2023. Ryan Tannehill has a $36.6 million cap number and a $27 million base salary in the final year of his deal. The Titans are potentially considering their options. Maybe Lance is one of them. Maybe Lance, based on his social-media post about the team’s new G.M., hopes he’ll be. PFT
Crossing fingers is also a universal sign for "Good Luck". It's more probable he is just wishing him good luck in his new endeavor. BUT... Let's speculate he wants to abandon the 49ers, that's more fun..and will get TONS of clicks.
You made a good point about the crossed-fingers, I didnt even think of that, but your right. Lance has kinda been the last in line the way he's been handled, but also just a victim of circumstances that have been unfortunate to him personally. 49ers just want the best product out there and Lance keeps drawing the short straw. He has reason to be frustrated, but it is a mean business.
If he had proven his worth… THEN… stayed healthy, he wouldn’t need to want out. It is what it is, which at this point in his young career, it’s just been a disappointment.
Brock will come crashing back down to earth this weekend. He is a great story but he is not a franchise QB. Put him on the Steelers and he would have made tribs look good.
So I'm looking through some mock drafts and I'm on one site where they have the bears going with Will Anderson DE/OLB at pick #1. They then go to the Texans and #2 and say well they can't get the QB they want because of winning in the last week. Ummm if the only team ahead of them didn't take a QB doesn't that mean they are free to take the QB they want?
The 49ers are going to rough up the cowboys and Purdy will play good. Purdy is a gem he’s not going to crash.
What's the going rate for a reach pick who cannot stay healthy, cannot out-play his competition, and looks like a below average QB in the most QB-friendly system with a loaded roster? A sixth and next year's seventh?
At the end of it all, the 9ers may be happy to get that since he looks like the 3rd best QB on the roster.
Second best next season. Garrapolo has a no tag clause and would surely want to test the waters. Purdy is set for next year unless a catastrophe happens.
