My feeling, based on Browns' ownership, is that Stefanski will be judged based on his time with Watson. If they win all 6 with Watson, he stays. If they look awful and Watson plays like crap, he's gone. Anywhere in between gets hairy. Owner brought in Watson for a reason, and he is the guy they're committed to, not the coach. If the team goes 6-11, but the 6 are with Watson, Stefanski still stays. I know that's a gross oversimplification, but can anyone see the ownership deciding to make this aggressive a move for Watson, and then giving the coach time to work things out if they're not gelling in the first season? It feels out of character, to me.
I feel that Haslem didn’t learn Jack while he was a minority owner of the Steelers. Everything that he does is antisteeler. He should have paid attention to how the Steelers run things while he was there. Because they are one of the best run organizations in all of sports.
Haslem is an impatient interfering owner not quite to the level of Jerry Jones. Remember him being convinced to draft Manziel by a homeless guy when our GM had different plans? His finger prints are all over the acquisition of Watson. The guy wants to win now and is willing to try and buy it. We’ve got salary cap hell coming soon and who knows how the talent we do have is held on to.
@SAS I think Stefanski has (almost) a pass this year due to the suspension decision dragging on forever. As far as the subject of wins and losses, If they have 0 or 1 win, it’ll depend what Watson does in 6 games. Belly up and the coach goes although not sure how many Watson losses would do it. I have to believe it’s dependent on the level of play by the Off and Def. If the offense can play decently under Brisset, I don’t see the wins and losses being a decider except for my earlier opinion. As for the Def, if they aren’t playing like one of the better Def’s in the league, that may play a big factor. I think Stefanski has quite a bit of wiggle room as long as the team plays decently. And next season will surely be the hot seat year with Watson available from the start. Then Quick-Draw McHaslem is going to have an itchy trigger finger and at least a deep playoff run will be required.
That would eat two years of a five year contract. I actually think some impatience here might be due. If you don't think Stefanski is the guy, you've gotta make the change now before you waste another year of Watson's deal. Like you said, cap difficulty is coming - can't waste that window, as forced open as it's been. So I would actually be on the side of ownership if they canned Stefanski at the end of this year, presuming his time with Watson wasn't fruitful. Because it's Super Bowl or bust for Cleveland over the next 3-5 years, given the move they've made for Watson.
Well, having been shown the owner's impatience with every other head coach and QB and front office, I wouldn't be surprised.
Jacoby Brissett will start on Saturday The Browns are set to start Jacoby Brissett at quarterback for the first 11 games of the regular season and they’ll get him some preseason work on Saturday night. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Brissett will start against the Bears to close out the preseason. Brissett did not play in either of the team’s first two preseason games, but will join most of the team’s starters on the field as the team wraps up their summer slate. Stefanski did not specify how much everyone will play, but the game should be important for the offense to build chemistry after a summer that saw their preparation affected by the uncertainty about Deshaun Watson‘s availability. They haven’t had as much time to work with Brissett as one might like, so all the snaps he does take will be significant. One starter who will not play is right tackle Jack Conklin, who continues to work his way back to full strength after last year’s knee injury. PFT
So Denzel Mims, Jets WR, wants a trade since he's not getting any playing time. Guy was a 2nd rounder in 2020. That's about all I know about him. Anybody else familiar with him and would he be worth a trade?
If DGNR8 was here I'd participate more for sure! Miss him greatly. I can concur...the geritol bottles flew regularly and without prejudice. Everyone was fair game. I've been reading off and on, and from what I can tell, this whole Watson thing is quite the debacle not only for the Browns as a team and a franchise, but also for the fanbase. I would hope that nobody would feel driven from these boards for any reason, but I can understand not wanting to be a part of it anymore, that's for sure. The anger and vitriol can become quite tiring and sometimes it's just not worth it. I respect and like Lyman, and Irish, and many of the Browns fans in this group and hope they all stick around, even if they avoid those they struggle to get along with.
If you think it's empty here, you should the Ravens board now. I should create 2 other accounts and just talk to myself
Reality check... Browns have a good QB... period. Not excellent, but good. Add to that, great running backs, good o-line and a star studded , pretty good defense. Now is not the time to hang your heads, but, and my point is, this team will be competitive. Every game, especially early on, I would and will be sitting on the edge of my chair to see what happens... it will be better than I think a lot of people think.
I just have no idea, Willie. Didn’t get to see hardly any starters all preseason and certainly not all together. As for what I expect….I expect the defense to pick up where they left off last year. The offense? Not really sure. I’m rather pessimistic due to the last two plus decades of play since the return. If the offense can’t stay on the field and score, the defense is going to get tired from being back out there and that doesn’t bode well. I just have no idea how the offense is going to roll. Haven't seen our 53 man roster yet but just a quick glance at the schedule……..I’m giving a best guess of 3 maybe 4 wins until Watson is back. Again, it’s the pessimism in me. Can’t be overly disappointed if I’m expecting the worst.
