So far Rudolph is outperforming the other two. Trubisky is really looking like a waste of time. Picket is looking like a rookie getting his feet wet. If Rudolph does prove he should be the starter, what do we do with Trubisky ? Picket might need a little while on the bench and I can’t see holding onto Trubisky as a backup. It really looks like signing Trubisky was a waste of cap space.
Uh oh... What happened in Pittsburgh? Presumably Pickett got picked at practice prematurely attempting a play-action pass to Pickins.

Mason is going to be ahead, he’s been in the system longer and will have better timing with most of the WR’s. If Trubisky is hitting full throttle at the end of camp I won’t be worried. You don’t trade anyone or cut anyone in case of injury. Picket will stay as QB3 this year, needs to read defenses faster and get the ball out faster. Hopefully will learn those with a QB coach.
Led a 2 minute drill capped with a TD to Pickens. We’ll learn a hell of a lot more in the pre season games than we will from practice reports
Now Rudolph is splitting the first team reps with Trubisky. Looking like he is starting to lose his hold on the starting job.
8 practices and Rudolph is still the clear leader. TD Rudolph Yards Rudolph YPA Rudolph YPC Rudolph Completion % Pickett Most interceptions Trubisky Why did we waste precious cap space on Trubisky?
Real quick - Trubisky is likely the most physically talented of the bunch. He's just gotta get his head fixed. If the staff feels they can run an offense through him - however much learning time they need to give him / adjustments made to ease it for him - it's his job. I don't think they feel comfortable making that call one way or the other until they see a lot more from him. It's just camp. It's early. Calm down. I don't think Trubisky is the answer, but they still likely do.
Tomlin says Trubisky leads Steelers’ QB race, but Pickett and Rudolph are “making it difficult” Mitchell Trubisky remains in the lead in the Steelers’ quarterback competition, but it’s a close three-way race a month before the season. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told CBS Sports that if the Steelers had to play a meaningful game this week, Trubisky would start. But Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph are performing well enough in training camp that the coaching staff is having a tough time saying definitively that Trubisky will get the job. “They’re making it difficult for us,” Tomlin said. “It’s tough to manage three capable guys, but they’re forcing us to do it because they’re making the necessary plays. They’re anticipating, the timing has been good, [and] the accuracy has been good. Mitch’s silver bullet, if you will, is his fluidity and mobility. He’s a really good athlete. Rudolph throws a really good deep ball. [Pickett] has been Steady Eddie. Kenny P, I don’t think you can get him in an environment where he gets flustered. . . . We saw that at Pitt and it’s it’s been the same. It doesn’t matter what drill or what environment you put him in. He’s Steady Eddy and really cool.” Trubisky has been the favorite to win the starting job since he signed with the Steelers in March, and he’s been the No. 1 quarterback in camp. Something would have to change for Rudolph or Pickett to move ahead of Trubisky on the depth chart, but Tomlin isn’t ready to rule anything out yet. PFT
I don’t know what Tomlin is seeing? From the camp highlights and stats Trubisky is on the bottom of the QB carousel. If Tomlin really thinks that way then this isn’t really an open competition. But Trubisky gets only first team reps so maybe he is facing a much better defensive team in practice. That will show up in the preseason games if it is a factor, because we won’t be playing any great defenses in those games.
You said it right there, smoke and mirrors. The typical fan doesn't pay attention to what you do, it isn't really a competition. It IS an opportunity to look at all three in case Trubs is a complete shit show. But it looks like he is good enough that it isn't going to be a real decision. That might come later (or earlier) in the season if he can't help the team win however.
Yup. Trubisky will be the starter when the season opens. He's not going to be tested in preseason, so they won't know whether or not he can run the offense until he gets real tests. And that may take a few weeks. Remember, he looked good in Chicago very early in spurts. But he feel apart against any real competition, and once teams knew what to look for against the offense (not him, specifically). I expect that he gets 4-6 weeks before he either confirms he should be the starter or for the grumbles to start. It will likely take longer than that for the wheels to really fall off, because I expect Pitt's offensive staff to be good enough to carry him. That's going to be what it comes down to - can the staff be his brain so he doesn't have to use it.
How could you? He is one of the best coaches in the game and has watched every throw from the Spring until now. You're a guy reading things on the internet, grasping at anything negative you can find to confirm a previous bias.
It was never a competition. Trubisky has the edge in arm talent, mobility and most important experience. The guy has started 57 games in this league and won 34 of them, for a down franchise that hasn't been relevant since the 80s. He started one year in college and because they over-drafted him they then had to put him on the field way too early. Should have sat and watched a full year but bad franchises make bad decisions. Maybe he'll be as bad as a lot of people hope but I don't think so. Who could possibly no one way or the other? The only thing I know for sure is he was dealt a really bad hand by the Chicago coaching staff and he still had some success. Only time will tell.
