I've come around on this quite a bit, while I still wanted more for Mack, he did get something and will eventually clear cap space. I think he is looking to rebuild. To be honest, there's a good chance he's not even sold on Fields, which is fine. Build the Oline, re-vamp the aging D into the 4-3, then either Fields is coming into his own, or we can draft a QB behind a stellar Oline? I am definitely ok if this is the plan. Build up picks rather than trade them away. It will hurt next year, but it is definitely not the worst plan. We can look at Fields development. If we don't see any next year, then we know. I especially think this is true if BWW is right and we are shopping Quinn, etc. Build up some draft picks. Then we just have to see if Poles can draft.
Im leery of any offensive lineman who can’t crack 1/5 spots before coming in late in season against teams who are beat up before they look good. We just saw Mustipher do that. However, Mustipher didn’t win a Super Bowl, so the closest comp I got is Halapoulivati Vaitai, who was on the bench when lane Johnson got hurt the year big dick nick beat Tom Brady in the Super Bowl and he filled in nicely for Philly. Long story short, the lions gave him a big contract and he’s at guard because he can’t play tackle starting week 1, and he’s a middle of the pack guard. Unremarkable, but can start for somebody. Vaitai got 5 years 50 mil 20 guaranteed from Detroit. I’d rather not take that kind of risk with Noteboom. If I’m handing out double digit millions to an OL in FA, give me a center like Jensen, Paradis, or Notebooms teammate Allen.
Looks like around 3 years and 41 million for Ogunjobi. Good 3T that can give you a lot of snaps at NT as well. Legit 3 down DT.
I think they overpaid just based on past production, but you need someone to fill these roles in the new defense, and you didn't give him a long-term deal. I'm good with that. Keep contracts short, stockpile picks, and extend the diamonds in the rough that you find via FA. My torch and pitchforks are still securely fastened in their "For Ryan Pace" box, right now.
I believe it was pat that called this guys name. Good work pat. Generally speaking i want more resources going to the O than the D the next couple offseasons, that said, without a viable 3 tech this switch falls flat. Would be nice in the guaranteed $ isnt too high.
Seeing it reported the guaranteed is $26.35mil. Thats a lot. Would've liked it to be 20 but first day FA signing so i guess not.
Makes him like the 9th or 10th highest paid DT in football. He's a 3 down guy. Disruptive. I don't have an issue.
I'm impressed with Poles. If you're running a 4 front, the 3 tech is the most important position on the DLine and Ogunjobi was the best available. Like the deal. Means DT probably isn't a priority pick in the draft. Center continues to concern me. Jensen reupped in Tampa, as did Ben Jones in Tennessee and now Brad Allen in LA. Ted Karras signed in Cinci. This leaves Matt Paradis, and you're probably going to have to go north of 8 mil AAV to get him and he's 33, so more than 2 years you risk it. That should be the new priority, because unless the gameplan is to trade up into the 1st round for Tyler Linderbaum (which mustn't be done,) you don't have anybody to play center--which means square peg in round hole incoming. Alex Bars just got released. LOL Allen Robinson is linked to Detroit.
Also, how do the packers have enough money for their ILB for 10 mil, a pay raise to Preston Smith, tag Adams and probably give him a new deal along with a new deal for Rodgers when they walked into the offseason 40 mil over the cap? Rodgers gets 74.5 mil this year but his cap hit is 28.5 mil. Next year he gets 62.5 mil but a cap hit of 31.6 mil (numbers via Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapaport). Makes total sense…. Can the bears sign this cap guy?
cool. How do they account for 20 mil for Adams? I know they restructured A Dlineman and an OL to save 20 mil, but they’d still be in the red by 3-4 mil even after lowering Rodgers 17 from 46 to 29 (but somehow getting away with paying him 74.5 million). Add 20 mil from Adams’ franchise tag they’re at 23 and change in the red. Am I overthinking this? I want to know how they get away with that. Is it as easy as just declaring it and Goodell letting it happen?
Pretty quiet overall but a couple of minor bits. James Daniels signed with the Steelers. Not a long term contract which is slightly interesting, but still, 3years at like $26.5mil. Don't know what the guaranteed $ is, but just looking at these numbers that is an overpay. Its not an outright fleecing but nearly $9mil a season? Yah for what Daniels has shown thus far thats a clear overpay. I doubt many knowledgeable Bears fans will be upset the team didnt give him that deal. Im certainly not. All the best James. Seeing reports the Bears are gonna sign Lucas Patrick at 2-$8&$4. He can play both C & G so with Daniels leaving its not entirely certain where Patrick would line up yet. Probable that Poles is trying to give himself options re this, which isn't unsmart. I do expect him to end up at C tho. Personally i was drawn to more established names, like Bozeman or Tretter. I dont know too much about Patrick but if pushed would call him solid if unspectacular. Its a highly team friendly deal so there's v low financial risk. But if it was me i would've liked to see more ambition/aggression to get a clear above average C.
Bears sign Raiders LB Nick Morrow, who missed last year injured and I believe was released with injury designation (like Tarik Cohen was), playing into not affecting comp pick potential. 26 years old, has 4.5 speed and had a great 2020. Looks like the guy with Quan for the 4-2-5? Lose Jakeem Grant. 3 years 13 mil to Cleveland. Have fun protecting Mitch again, James Daniels. All fair. I think Poles is looking for a specific kind of OL. He mentioned the need for 'lighter' guys, so run mauling tanks like Bozeman probably didn't fit the McVay/LaFleur/Shanahan scheme we expect Getsy to run. Tretter fits better, but wasn't a bargain bin fit, even though cut guys don't count against the comp pick formula.
Like: Nick Morrow. Athletic linebacker with flexibility. Also like: Lucas Patrick, guard from Packers. Was a backup mostly but Getsy likes him and he fits the mold of the type of OL Poles wants....nasty. The biggest reason Poles didn't love Daniels is because he views him as soft. Patrick can either be a starter if they don't find a better option or he can be a swing reserve. But I like the signing. Hate: Losing Jakeem Grant. Good returner that can give you some plays on offense. Big gain for the Browns.
Also lots of rumors about Virginia's healthy floating around. I know I'm an asshole...but I won't be sad to see her go.
If ever there was an understatement... It will be an interesting draft given he has stated he wants speed on both sides of the ball, but he seems to also like guys with an edge like Jenkins with that take no prisoners mentality. If we were doing the draft contest I would be looking towards the top of the Underwear Olympics for guys with the BWW attitude.
Well if he's got some nasty in him then i like him better already. He was soft. High effort between the whistles, but never saw an edge to his game which was something i always wanted to see. Yeah that sucks. 6th round draft pick for like 10games of work.
Bears signed/claimed some backup RB from Tennessee, Darrynton Evans—who’s trying to recruit Julio Jones. Sure. Later, Damien Williams. Nichols to the raiders, prob offset comp pick by signing of Lucas Patrick. Seattle felt Artie Burns was a priority. Megaleg to the packers. Probably won’t pay for a punter, but I want Hekker who just got cut by LA. Minny is trying to shop Danielle Hunter. If they cut him (due to make 17 mil), he’s not someone I’d complain about playing opposite Quinn on a reduced price. Looking more and more like the draft will be a lot of offense.
