It makes for real interesting conversation. I think great QB's can be culture changers. The Browns famously struggled to find a QB, but how different would things have been if we would have drafted Brees or Roethlisberger or Rodgers or Russ etc?? I think it would have made a world of difference in the franchise direction. It's a QB league, and if you don't have one you are just spinning tires.
I agree with what you are saying. However, in Cleveland's case, I don't think all 4 of those guys + that front office = success. I think at least 1 or 2 of those guys fail in Cleveland and are not what you think of them as today
I actually have been talking about this a lot lately. What if Josh Allen got drafted by an impatient team who had a GM change before his 3rd season? Would they have bothered to go get him a real WR1 and stick it out and watch him explode in year 3? Would Darnold actually be a good QB if he had... not Adam Gase? If Rosen went to the Giants (who basically refuse to give up on draft picks =P) would they have given him 3 years to sort himself out instead of the kid getting tossed around? And then on the flip side would Ben have been able to survive on a bad team or would he have just gotten thrown out of the league? Would Brees be Brees if he went to Maimi instead of pairing up with Sean Payton? All this stuff is so interesting to think about to me.
Well I hope you're cool with the choice anyways. Your bro took him in the other mock for Miami and I personally think he's BPA there. I couldn't argue with that combination
I disagree. Those guys were going to be great wherever. You get a QB like that and then coaches fall into place. We could argue the degree of success, but to say one or two of those future HoF'rs would have flopped is a stretch.
Agree to disagree. But I've never been Ben's biggest supporter. You think his off-field stuff helps a directionless team suddenly make coaches look good? He's my #1 most likely bust on that list for Cleveland, but possibly not the only one.
I dunno about being able to say that with absolute confidence. Just as one example - Brees was actually dumped in favor of Rivers in SD before getting a shot in a system that excelled at favoring his better traits.
Just like Russ, he was disrespected coming out of college. Chargers didn't know what they had. Even they viewed Brees as too short, thus the move for Rivers.
They drafted him with a 2nd round pick. So I'm not convinced by your argument they thought he was too short. If anything they were worried about his health after a shoulder injury.
Exactly! There are a relatively small amount of NFL QB's that are truly great and can be an all time great regardless of system. Most guys need to be in the right place / right time to ever hit that sort of ceiling. I have begun to think that going to the right situation is more important than the raw talent of the player. These guys (mostly) have the raw ability to play QB, but they don't all have the raw ability to play it any way any time anywhere. Because if they go to the wrong situation the wrong aspects can get highlighted. If you were drafted for one offensive system and then it changes on you while you are still developing -- do the skills that got you drafted in the first place translate?
Maybe, but his numbers didn’t suggest that he was on his way to the Hall. And, more to the point - There’s a possibility we’re not even discussing the HoF if he remained in San Diego. His changing of situations definitely impacted his career arc.
