    The rich get richer.

Tough to find a better starting 3-4 at the position in the NFL, isn’t it?

I can't argue that Hollywood is a top reciever, but I like him and IMO Freddie alienated both Higgins and Njoku, to no good end.

I'm very happy to have both back, and believe Stefanski will make batter use of both these guys.

Hopefully we have a more confident and competent Coaching staff and without a prima donna GM, we don't make those kind of foolish mistakes this season. Both of those guys and who knows how many more were undercut by the team leadership. Unforgiveable, thus the parting of ways.

I firmly believe we have the talent, and our most glaring weakness was in Coaching and Management (sound familiar). Callahan as O line coach will dramatically impact the play of Mayfield, along with the talent acquired before and during the draft.

Lends some credence to my err... the 2021 Mock Draft with Pittsburgh drafting #3 overall:

Also, live look at Myles Garrett when he read the story...

Everyone has been talking about getting Clowney or updating the defensive line...

What if instead, they switch gears and just complete the set on the offensive line?

Talk has gone to competition for the RG spot... We aren't going to have time to have that competition with COVID-19 interrupting. Get Larry Warford(one of the best interior lineman the past 3 years and, oh yeah, he plays RG) to give this line the best chance to gel with the best talent available.

With Warford, this offense could become unstoppable. Without him, they could have a weak link on the chain.. we all know what a weak link can do.

I could get on board with that.

These two moves make too much sense, especially if you swap out Vernon for Clowney on a one-year "prove it" deal, like ESPN suggests.

This is the 1st time in my (admittedly failing) memory that so many starter spots are "locked down" prior to the start of training camp.

Offensively, IMHO, the only starting gig that could see some competition is at right guard and - if the Browns actually do sign Larry Warford, that open spot is gone as well. Of course, one could add slot receiver to the list of open starter spots but - with the roster having (2) starting caliber tight ends, (2) starting caliber running backs and a real honest to goodness fullback, I question how critical having a stud slot receiver really is. (OBTW, how much fun would the next Brian Brennan be on this offense?)

Defensively, I think the only critical group to watch is the linebacker group. This group, IMHO, is by far the weakest positional group on the entire roster. Ironically, I can see opposing tight ends feasting on these guys. Beyond this, it will be interesting to see if Grant Delpit can earn a starting Safety spot and who will take over as the situational Nickle Corner.

No, I see the most compelling competitions in training camp (if they ever get to have one) to be for backup / rotational spots. In reality, that's a good problem to have. Those that make the 53 man roster will have earn their stripes on special teams.

The really bad news is that, because of the pandemic lock downs, this roster will have very little time to grasp the coaching staff's concepts/schemes or gel into cohesive units. Once again, we're the only team in the AFC North dealing with a new coaching staff.

    Hey guys,

Not a lot going on, so a question of curiosity, that loosely associates to the off-season. Is there any rule that prohibits a team or player signing a contract that is less than a year?

Example: An older vet chasing a ring wants to sign a 10 game contract with a potential contender to keep his options open in case that team’s season goes to crap. Then he can cut ties and try to latch on with a team that’s looking like it’s going to make a serious push, or sign on with the current team if it’s looking good. Also, a shorter “prove it” deal.

I’m not saying it’s a good idea for either party, I’m just curious if it’s possible. Like I said, it’s a boring time for football talk.

    Good question. In short . . . I don't know.

I always thought that all NFL contracts expired on the last day of the appropriate NFL season. Here's a link to an article dealing with NFL contracts that I stumbled across trying to find out. From the sounds of it, it looks like something could be written into the addendum that could make this possible.

The problem you will run into is that a team will want compensation. They won't give a guy a contract and "plan" on replacing him 10 weeks into the season. What if that team IS a contender, but another contender signs him away anyway.. then the originating teams chances pretty much slip away.

Teams are planning for playoffs (even when they really have no chance). There is no plan you can put together for replacing a player mid-season.

Accurate, and I agree, but you totally didn’t answer the question.

I would imagine the same rule that dictates the official start and end dates of the season would encompass this, as well. Given the amount of regulations over contracts as they relate to player status (RFA, UFA, games accrued towards, veteran minimums, etc), I would imagine this would be included in that regulation.

But I don't know for certain, with a citation I can provide.

I did some more thinking (and research) on this. All NFL contracts begin and end on the first and last day of the NFL season(s) to which they apply. That's why players with expired contracts all become free agents on the same day.
