Luq Barcoo might not have got drafted, but he did sign a record breaking UDFA deal with the Jaguars. $160k guaranteed, and $20k signing bonus.

Ben Roethlisberger “excited” about addition of receiver Chase Claypool

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger definitely was not excited when the team used a third-round draft pick on quarterback Mason Rudolph in 2018, one draft after using a fourth-round draft pick on quarterback Joshua Dobbs.

This year, Roethlisberger definitely is excited that the team used a second-round pick on receiver Chase Claypool.

“I honestly don’t know much about Chase other than his numbers and size, but [I’m] excited,” Roethlisberger told Ed Bouchette of TheAthletic.com via email. “I heard he’s a good, hard-working guy and a great teammate. I’m sure he’s excited to get to come share a [wide receivers meeting] room and learn from a great player like JuJu [Smith-Schuster].”

The Steelers under G.M. Kevin Colbert have done a great job of finding receivers in the draft, often in the later rounds. In recent years, they spent a third-rounder on Diontae Johnson in 2019, a second-rounder on James Washington in 2018, and a second-rounder on Smith-Schuster in 2017. Without 2010 sixth-rounder Antonio Brown in 2019, however, the Steelers didn’t do much at the position.

It didn’t help that Roethlisberger was lost for the season in Week Two. If he’s healthy this year, the receiver necessarily will be better because they guy throwing them the ball will be dramatically better, all due respect to the guys who were throwing them the ball last year.

Roethlisberger probably called Tomlin and Colbert during the draft and was told Dobbins or Claypool? Ben said are you kidding me? I’m not handling the ball off for 35 million a year, get me that big ass receiver.

Of course with that much competition it brings up the same question I have every year with certain guys. Why would Tate pick Philadelphia?

About a 1% chance he wins a job there. So if I can answer my own question with any logic, my only guess is that he thinks their system will show off his skill set the best. They have a well-paid presumptive starter, just took a back up in the second round, so it’s not like he thinks he’s going to win a job there

I had the same thought. Maybe bonus, maybe he thinks he is playing RB/WR, I dunno.

Khalil Tate is officially listed at WR.

Did the Steelers get sidetracked during this draft?

Impressive, Tim, you nailed it. Glad he got a gig, I just don't like good things happening in Green Bay. ;)

Can I just say that it is Monday morning and I am surprised the everyone in the front office at Green Bay still have jobs. I am dumbfounded by the inept drafting ability by an organization that found a way to piss off not 1 HOF but eventually 2 HOF quarterbacks in two terms.

The Bengals get a B- at worst for not protecting Burrow until the 6th round. But getting a top WR at least means you have a WR 1, 2, and 3 easily.

The Packers got a QB in round 1 and a questionable RB in round 2, no real weapons for Aaron, no upgrade to stop SF (who hasn't stopped) after running all over them in the NFC championship. If I were Packerd fans/owners, I would be rioting until house is cleaned.

I can hear it, well who will replace them at this moment, so late in the process. Marvin Lewis would be a perfect GM, the guy that brought in the likes of Carson Palmer, Andy Dalton, AJ Green, Eifert, Whitworth, Atkins. The man can draft, and he doesn't have to control the players.

Sounds weird and Homer but I had been pressing for years he would be a better GM than head coach, with his ability to spot players with top talent in the NFL and without the money issues of Mike Brown, he would be in heaven.

PFF gave the Eagles an A-... and some other weird grades like the Ravens being like a B- at best.

I did some number crunching and at a per value basis (based on my own scores) the Browns would have grabbed the most average value per player in this class.

That does not include teams that drafted QBs, but if it did, the Browns still had a higher average per.

NFL.com's grades per team was not kind to the Packers at all. The drafting of an early round QB has a lot of talk and speculation chatter throughout many different web-sites. Im really enjoying some of the stuff ive read, but I dare gloat as this could all come back in a couple years and bite me.

If I go by strictly by the numbers, the two lowest scoring classes (that didn't draft a passer) are separated by 0.7 on the average per player.

    Those two teams?

    Chicago and New England.

Green Bay is easily the lowest with teams that took quarterbacks and the fact that they took one of the top 4 scoring makes it even worse.

When people look at the Packers draft and bitch, well, the numbers suggest they have good reason to, lol.
