George Perles, a coach who spent a decade with the Steelers and was one of the architects of the Steel Curtain defense, has died at the age of 85.

Perles was hired by Chuck Noll as the Steelers’ defensive line coach in 1972, and that season the Steelers made the playoffs for the first time in 25 years and ranked second in the NFL in points allowed.

For the following decade, the “Steel Curtain” defense became one of the best in NFL history, with Perles coaching the defensive line through 1977 and then being promoted to defensive coordinator in 1978 and promoted again to assistant head coach in 1979. Perles won four Super Bowl rings as a Steelers assistant.

In 1982 Perles quit the Steelers to become head coach of the Philadelphia Stars of the upstart United States Football League. Perles spent a year helping to build the Stars’ roster, and they would go on to become the best team in the USFL, but Perles never coached a game for them: He quit the Stars to become the head coach at his alma mater, Michigan State, in 1983.

Michigan State was coming off a 2-9 season when Perles arrived, but he quickly improved the team and built a program that won the Rose Bowl after the 1987 season, finishing as the No. 8 team in the country.

Perles’s last season as a coach was in 1994. He would later spend 12 years on Michigan State’s Board of Trustees.

January football in Green Bay is like no other. Frost-burning colds, frozen fields and snow whisking from the sky.

With the snow, however, comes a call for aid.

The Green Bay area is expected to get pummeled with eight to 10 inches of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Given the 70 percent chance of snow accumulation ahead of Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, the Packers are putting out a request for shovelers to help clear Lambeau Field.

The Packers are asking for as many as 700 shovelers to assist with the process beginning at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, according to the team's official website.

If you're in the area and willing to support, the Packers will pay volunteers $12 per hour. And don't worry about bringing your own equipment. The team will provide shovels. Further information can be found at the team's website.

With kickoff set for 5:40 p.m. local time (central), occasional snow showers could also fall during the game, per the Weather Channel, with light winds. The temperature is expected to hover around 21 degrees, with winds between 4 and 7 mph.

Packers fans are far too fat to do that. They're gonna have to ship labor in.

This is why I'm not all that upset about the Saints losing to the Vikings. Had we won ?? That would be us there on Sunday. We all know about the Saints, on the road, cold, outside.

The Packers are the worst 13-3 team I have seen in a long time. They got 4 wins against the Bears and Lions 2 shitty teams.

Not that I think the Packers are great, I don't at all, but could you name me a team from any year in the league that got double digit wins without at least 4 of them coming against very subpar teams?

Wow looks it's going to be a mess for the Packers Seahawks playoff game

I was thinking the same thing. The Saints went 13-3 and had the whole NFC South to feast on. But it looks pretty cool at the end of the year.

    Gidion's argument was dumb.

The right argument would've been - Green Bay only beat two teams with winning records the entire season, including the week 17 win over Minnesota.

I will never like the idea of using a teams schedule against them.

You're paid to beat the team you line up against...you aren't responsible for the schedule.

    No fine for Clowney...

Jadeveon Clowney faced death threats from angry Eagles fans, but that appears the worst repercussion for the Seahawks defensive end for his hit on Carson Wentz.

Mark Maske of The Washington Post reports that the NFL has decided not to fine Clowney for the hit that knocked Wentz out of Sunday’s game.

Clowney was not penalized on the play, and afterward, in a pool report, referee Shawn Smith called it “incidental” contact and not deemed a foul.

Clowney called it a “bang-bang play” after the game and wouldn’t talk about it Thursday.

The hit came on the ninth play of the game and sent Wentz to the locker room with a concussion.

Eagle fans would issue death threats to their own kids for walking in front of the TV when a game is on.
