Seguin, Stars progressing in contract talks
Center can become UFA after season, hoping 'something will get done before camp'

CHICAGO -- Tyler Seguin is optimistic that a contract extension can be worked out with the Dallas Stars in the next few weeks.

"That's been the goal all along," the 26-year-old center said during the NHL Player Media Tour on Thursday. "I envision hopefully having something done. They've been talking now. My agent has been talking to the team. Hopefully something will get done before camp."

The Stars begin training camp at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, on Sept. 14, and open the regular season at home against the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 4.

Seguin is entering the final season of a six-year, $34.5 million contract he signed with the Boston Bruins on Sept. 11, 2012, and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1, 2019. He became eligible to sign an extension with the Stars on July 1.

Seguin, who last season had 78 points, including an NHL career-high 40 goals, had not talked to the Stars about his contract since the 2018 NHL Draft on June 22-23.

"I'm disappointed it hasn't happened, but there hasn't been negotiations, it's just been training this summer, getting ready for this year," he said at BioSteel Camp in Toronto on Aug. 28. "I've still got this last year in Dallas, Dallas is home. I'm looking forward to having a good year and definitely want to win."

Seguin said things have progressed over the subsequent nine days, which included him returning to Dallas.

"There's been some dialogue now since the last time I talked to the media at BioSteel Camp," he said. "I'm hopeful something will get done in the next little while."

Seguin was traded to Dallas from Boston on July 4, 2013. He has 384 points (173 goals, 211 assists) in 387 games in the past five seasons and is tied for second in goals with Sidney Crosby during that span. Alex Ovechkin is first with 236.

"I think it's become a fit," he said. "I think [the Stars] just gave me an opportunity. My last team, I think there could have been a fit there too. It's a broken record now but there wasn't the opportunity like Dallas. The Stars kind of said, 'Here, you can take this chance wherever you can.'"

The Stars (42-32-8, 92 points) finished three points behind the Colorado Avalanche for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference last season, missing the playoffs for the second straight season and third time in the past four.

"I think I've earned things in Dallas that made it more of a fit. It's home for me," Seguin said. "I still envision being a Dallas Star."
