Pete Carroll praises new arrival Quandre Diggs for big game vs. 49ers

Quandre Diggs played his first game as a Seahawk on Monday night, and coach Pete Carroll loved what he saw.

Diggs, a safety acquired for a fifth-round draft pick in a trade with the Lions, intercepted a pass and played all 88 defensive snaps in the Seahawks’ overtime victory over the 49ers, and Carroll said the Seahawks got their best game of the season from the safety position.

“I think the settling presence of a veteran, and also, [Diggs] is a hitter,” Carroll said. “He’s a real hitter and he goes for it. He had a couple big shots. Had a big shot in the toss. Had a couple shots on receivers that I think had a factor later on in the game. . . . You combine what [Diggs and Bradley McDougald] did, I thought the safety play was the best we’ve seen it this year. I thought that was the best game that our safeties have played. I’m hoping that we can continue to grow and get better and feed off it. It’s an early assessment because Q’s just played one game. He can do a lot of things, so we’ll be anxious to figure out how he can complement what we’re doing and utilize him now that he’s crossed the threshold of playing time for us.”

It’s a credit to Diggs that he could arrive on a new team and learn the system well enough that he could play every snap, and play at a high level, in his first game. And it raises a question of why the Lions were so eager to get rid of him: The Lions’ defense gave up three touchdown passes to Mitchell Trubisky in a loss to the Bears on Sunday. They could have used a player like Diggs.

That flex out of Sunday night is awesome. Seahawks going coast to coast for a 10am PT game. Eagles got a gift.

The NFL and its Players Association could have a deal completed by early 2020 after making progress in negotiations, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement likely includes a 17-game regular season.

The agreement would scale back the preseason and could come with an expansion of the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams, Maske adds. Unlike an increase in regular-season games, though, expansion of the postseason does not require the union’s approval.

Any expansion of the regular season, of course, would mean owners have made financial concessions to get players to agree. The NFLPA consistently has opposed the idea of more regular-season games, citing player safety concerns.

Maske writes that while it is unclear exactly what the concessions are, the new deal could include modifications to the rookie compensation system put in place in the 2011 labor deal.

The biggest issue likely will come in the split of the NFL’s revenue, estimated at $15 billion per season, under the salary cap system.

But the recent movement in negotiations has created optimism the sides could reach a deal by the end of the postseason. Super Bowl LIV is scheduled for Feb. 2, ending the 2019 season.

The current CBA expires after the 2020 season.

Jets owner says Adam Gase will be head coach in 2020...

The New York Jets are 2-7, which is not good, of course, but that does not mean sweeping changes are coming.

Adam Gase will remain the Jets' head coach for the rest of 2019 and the start of 2020, and his assistants aren't going anywhere this season, either. That's what Jets owner Christopher Johnson told reporters Wednesday at the team's Florham Park, New Jersey, headquarters.

"I want to assure you there will be no changes in coaches here," Johnson said, per NJ.com. "Adam has the trust of this team. He has the trust of Sam (Darnold). He has (general manager) Joe's (Douglas) trust. He has my trust. He's a good man. He's a good coach."

Johnson delivered the same message to Jets players Wednesday and received a positive response, NFL Network's Kimberly Jones reported.

Gase is in his first season in New York, which couldn't have gotten off to a worse start (thanks in part to Darnold's unavailability due to mononucleosis), but he's enjoying a few days of positive vibes after defeating the Giants in a cross-town shootout of sorts Sunday. The win left Darnold so optimistic, he told reporters the Jets could go on a run to the playoffs.

At 2-7, that seems improbable, but highlights how quickly moods can shift in the NFL based on the outcome of the most recent Sunday. Should Gase win a second straight game Sunday against the 1-8 Washington Redskins, the good feeling should continue to build, even if it's just incremental.

As we all know, turnarounds don't happen overnight in the NFL. For a team like the Jets, which has held onto doomed coaches longer than some franchises in the past, an expression of stability should help the team finish 2019 productively, and perhaps build toward greater success in 2020. Johnson emphasized how he brought in Douglas "to help build the team with Adam" and that there is "a great deal of work to do," which obviously can't be accomplished if one of the two is terminated.

"We're just getting started, but I feel really good about this team moving forward," Johnson said.

That won't appease angry fans, of course, who often call for the jobs of those in charge when they aren't instantly gratified. In the pressure cooker that is the New York market, these drastic shifts are only intensified. Johnson acknowledged as much, but isn't allowing public unrest to influence his decision.

Browns and Steelers tonight... its a big game!

    per; NFL.com

Unlikely and fleeting as it might be, there is still hope for the Browns to salvage their season of disappointment.

Unforeseen as it might well have been a month ago, there is now very realistic hope for the Steelers to be playing in games that matter when the season hits its stretch.

An age-old rivalry renewed, AFC North adversaries the Pittsburgh Steelers (5-4) and Cleveland Browns (3-6) collide on Thursday Night Football at 8:20 p.m. ET from Cleveland's FirstEnergy Stadium in a showdown airing live on FOX and the NFL Network.

Pittsburgh has claimed seven of the last eight in the rivalry, the only blemish a tie to open last season. Things have changed mightily since the teams began last year.

Cleveland is still rife with stars, but in the midst of a season having fallen far short of expectations, the Browns are clinging to hope and coming off a close win against the Bills.

Meanwhile, the Steelers found themselves mired in a similarly stifling start to the season, but have run off four consecutive victories and hold the the last AFC playoff spot in the standings.

Hard to phathom that his (Johnson) mind is made up already after the product he has looked at all season. Same things over and over expecting a different result is, insanity by definition, lol. I know from personal experience. ;)

Steelers cornerback Joe Haden didn’t practice on Wednesday, but it looks like he will be able to play against the Browns on Thursday night.

Haden was out of practice with an illness and the team listed him as questionable to play against his former team. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Haden is expected to be in the lineup in Cleveland.

Haden has not missed a game this season for the Steelers. He had his first interception of the year against the Rams last Sunday and also forced a fumble in the 17-12 Pittsburgh victory.

Since moving from Cleveland to Pittsburgh ahead of the 2017 season, Haden has faced his former team four times. He has 14 tackles, three tackles for loss and an interception in those outings.

After the Browns benched wide receiver Antonio Callaway for last Sunday’s game against the Bills, head coach Freddie Kitchens declined to explain the reason for the move while saying it would be a one-time thing.

As it turns out, Callaway won’t be in the lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Steelers either. It’s not another disciplinary matter, however. The Browns announced that they have waived Callaway off their roster on Thursday afternoon.

Callaway was reportedly late to last Sunday’s game, which was the fifth one he missed this season. The first four were the result of a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Callaway dropped to the Browns in the fourth round of the 2018 draft after several off-field incidents that culminated in missing his final season at Florida due to a suspension. Callaway had 51 catches, 675 yards and five touchdowns for the Browns.

The Browns filled the roster spot by activating offensive lineman Drew Forbes from injured reserve. The 2019 sixth-round pick hurt his knee late in the preseason.

Garrett should be suspended for the entire year and the police should take him out of the stadium in handcuffs.

Pouncey also shows his expected colors, but he should only get a 1-2 game suspension.

Fuck myles garrett for literally committing a crime on the field.

If the NFL wants to be seen as anything but a joke (especially in relation to safety and head injuries), he'll be suspended for the year.

My guess (and hope) is Garrett will be suspended for the rest of the season. And rightfully so.

There is absolutely no reason that can excuse that type of behavior. None.

His behavior stole the joy of winning this game from ALL Browns fans. Period.

Exactly. Piggybacking off Lym, I don't give a crap what Rudolph did in that scuffle. Even if garrett ripped off the helmet and tried punching Rudolph with his fist, that would have been a different story. This is so far beyond what should happen in sports. He needs to be criminally charged and doesn't deserve the privilege to play in the league this year.

We literally could have seen Rudolph killed on the field. I'm sorry, I don't watch the game to see shit like that.
