No I am not. The Canadian media company took a measure of the perceived response to Cherry's words and determined that they could not be seen as tolerating this outrage. The corporation is doing society's bidding, and in the process obliterating what should be one's right to free expression. It's ironic that Cherry had his job in the first place for the express purpose of giving his opinions.
The express purpose of giving his opinions towards hockey, not a certain segment of the population. Like I said, anyone else at sportsnet that would try to go there would be fired immediately. He's walking it back after the fact, he's now saying that if he had to do it all over again he would've used "everybody", instead of "you people". Picture being in a boardroom of a company and there 20 employees at the table, 10 of them are immigrants. If a member started using that language, "you people come to our country", that would be against company policy and they would be fired. Don Cherry and Sportsnet are a unique situation, sure, they wouldn't have done anything if there was no backlash, I'm not pretending to assume that corporations have a soul. They need grapes and are screwed now, they tried to make it right by encouraging him to go out there and do a little walkback, (which he's doing now). Either he's getting really old and can't think straight, or he's getting some bad advice, either way this is a loss all around.
I'm with you Dan. I don't think what he said was that bad at all. He didn't use profanity or any other derogatory word. It's not like he went Jimmy the Greek on them.
He didn't get fired over what he said, he got fired because how he handled it. He offended a lot of people including the Punjabi crew of HNIC as well as immigrants that have served and are currently serving in the Canadian armed forces. He was asked (they both were) to rectify the situation and walk it back a bit and he refused. He defied them and called their bluff and lost. Now he's realizing he played the wrong hand and is flip flopping everyday. I would have 100% respect for him if he stuck to his guns and didn't try to change his story a couple of days too late.Hey, this is what I believe, and I said what I said, see you later. I would have 100% respect if he immediately walked it back and showed empathy toward those that he offended. I have 0% respect with the way he's handling it now, sorry he lost me.
Grapes came in 1980 and was controversial then. He goes out in 2019 with a controversial moment......I still agree with what he said. His tenure is done.........and I look forward to watching Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday Night.
Does anyone REALLY believe Cherry was on HNIC to express his opinions about hockey, and only hockey? When is the last time he uttered a worthwhile hockey opinion? No, he was hired - and he retained his position - to drive viewers to the program. The fact that he held the position for about forty years is all the proof we need to establish that he succeeded. His method for attracting and retaining viewers? It was to make controversial comments about matters that people care about. Hockey was a theme, but not the reason for his program. Now he's gone because some were offended. (The reality isn't so much that he offended people; he was fired to demonstrate that "we won't tolerate such offensive language". Those who promulgated this way of thinking are the most intolerant members of society. I am not being glib when I state that I am offended that people took offense.
why? what has he done since he was fired? he's not offering an apology so he's sticking to his guns and not lowering himself to apologize to anyone. nothing wrong with that.
Yes, he said that he regrets what he said and he should've said, "everybody". At first he said he had no regrets and meant what he said.
Still can't find the Nov. 9th coaches corner, seems like it violated posting policies of an American company in California called youtube.
Don Cherry claims he wanted to apologize for controversial comments A day after Sportsnet fired him for implying new immigrants couldn’t be bothered to wear poppies, hockey commentator Don Cherry now tells Global News he should have used different words in his controversial rant. As Robin Gill reports, it seems everyone has an opinion on whether Cherry should have lost his job.
https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/warmington-orr-in-grapes-corner Bobby Orr not happy about Don Cherry's firing.
That's good to see Orr sticking up for his good friend. I predict Burke will take over the job, he's been mentioning grapes lately.
