Player Rankings

So @RTTRUTH and I have been working on a player ranking system based purely on stats.

We're still trying to find the right layout but right now we're just looking for some feedback.

Currently we've got quarterback, running back and receiver set up to view. Again we're still refining this process. When looking this over keep in mind that in the Passing List sheet, that the player is only being graded on pass related stats. His name will be found in the Rushing List for those types of stats.

We also included end of season ProFootball Focus (PFF) rankings to use as a comparison. I tried to keep all of our rankings located in column G&H under the title TCMD.

Hope you guys enjoy looking it over and we look forward to hearing what you've got to say as we look to get some constructive criticism.

    I see Eli at #9.

No thats the nfl ranking. I should hide that because it seems to get everyone.

I just stepped away from the computer but I wanna say Eli falls at like 19 can't recall.

Ours is the ranking in blue with the tcmd title.

11th. Now remember that this doesn't include any rushing yards.

As much as people hate him, his overall stats were well above average. Now I do agree that 11 might be a little high but PFF rankings of 31 is horrible, when you compare his stats to others. Which is what this system is doing.

I have been on record that Eli was getting bad stats because his team was being brutal, but I wouldn't have him that high, plus after a while it was becoming his fault.

I'm obviously a fan but this hate Eli gets old after hearing it 500 times especially when other factors are playing a role. Like I said, for PFF to rank him 31 is horrible, pretty sure they put their finger on the scale for that one.

But I also don't understand why they would rank Todd Gurley 16th, things might have changed since I last pulled the numbers, which was after the end of the reg. season.

    @LAOJoe

Maybe you could help us out.

Using +/- percentages that do not exceed 100% or -100% put percentages of the following stat lines for example. TD's are obviously an important stat so it would get at least a 60% figure where Interceptions would get a negative number.

    Comp
    Att
    Pct
    Att/G
    Yds
    Avg
    Yds/G
    TD
    Int
    1st
    1st%
    Lng
    20+
    40+
    Sck
    Rate

I'll plug them into the formula and see what it produces.

Ok, first off, I’m just noticing this thread.

    Second, I’m all in.

Third, with your permission, I’d like to showcase this on the site.

I have similar models to this for various stats/rankings, most are my own but some are borrowed, and I would like to utilize them within the framework of the site. We can work out details on accreditation for both yourself and RT (and anyone else willing to collate information for that section).

I’m away from home at the moment but I will check back in later this evening.

I’ll begin researching ways to best format this information within the site tomorrow morning.

@RTTRUTH and I are still looking to refine the system as well as add defensive player grades so I feel that it isn't really finished. When are you looking to use it? I'm good with you using it, I'd just like to see if we can't refine it a little first.

Appreciate the interest in it as we've put a lot of work into it.

So there are a couple of different ways to calculate these rankings. Each one produces some different results.

If I simply take the stats at face value a player with more attempts is going to be given an edge because odds are they had more TD's than someone with fewer stats. This is the way I'm currently calculating the numbers, however, if I turn the stats into percentages based on the number of attempts the player made, it changes things up. The first big change is I've got to remove non-qualifiers otherwise Matt Barkley is ranked 1st. Some may prefer this system over what I originally posted because it is based on how well they performed with the number of attempts given. I can see why, but I also think we're leaving out an important thing when we do this. Player's who consistently get a greater number of attempts are usually better than those that don't.

Take Russell Wilson and this is just one example I pulled so I can't say for certain, but take Wilson's QB rating. It appears to be higher in years he had fewer attempts.

Sorry about the formatting, new to the site and it's been awhile since I've posted in this format.

If you want to embed a spreadsheet that you have saved on google you can use the 'media tab' tab located in the header. As long as it is published to the public it can be viewed using the url with the media formatting.

You can also post images by using the 'more options' tab in the bottom right corner of the post box.

It would be at least mid-July/early August before I would be ready to add it to the site so there is plenty of time to refine it.

Also, I would be more than happy to assist in helping you guys tweak out anything that you may be looking to adjust.

I'm seeing a couple things already that may help to provide a more definitive picture, but that would be dependent on what your main vision is for this metric.

If you provide me with your email through private message or however you feel comfortable sending it I can get you editing rights to the workbook. Something is a miss with the chat feature, which is something new so I'm thinking its a addon or something that is preventing it from working or if you prefer we can chat here. Although I think chating here kinda slows it down.

Are you talking about the chat feature on Google? I'm not familiar with it, but the easiest way to reach me is through the message boards here.

I'll get you my email now, but before you give me editing privileges it would probably be best to walk me through the entire process, step by step, so I understand how it works and what the thought process is behind the numbers it creates.

I'll be happy to help. I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to go over the numbers and try to understand exactly what numbers it was trying to create and why. Once you are done going over it with Tim I'll probably ask the same. I'll surely naturally go more into it with ole Danny boy. (That is RT icydk)

    Sounds good man...

This first attempt I was putting too much weight into the bulk stats, a player with 600+ attempts in passing is going to likely have more yards so the final numbers were getting inflated so players like Eli were rapidly moving up the ranks where as someone like Carson Wentz was quickly falling. However, when you take the stat divided by the number of attempts it's pushing players with one or two attempts to the top. It's just a matter of finding the right balance. This new version I've set up does that but it's still not where I'd like to see it.

Take a look if you like.

    Version 2.0

If we can dial it in, we can apply it to past seasons to get a better idea of the overall player ranking.

If you can get the last 2 years, separately, going back before then it may help to see what weight helps more.

  19. ny92mike Potential Walk-On Giants

True. Getting this would be easy enough, but I wanna hold off and see what Tim and Dan think about this latest version. I believe I'm on the right track with this version but it still needs some adjustments.

The next few days isn't good for me but I'll be back at it later in the week. If I get some time I'll try and plug in the last couple years in some new workbooks and hit you up with it.
