That's a 15 year old league in Japan, the kids smooth, shows really high hockey iq. He'll probably be making his way here for further developing. Either that or he gets drafted from there and then gets a couple of years of development on the farm system.

lol, Strome looking like a slow starter, not a bust.

This guys sucks. JVR wasn't even NHL ready for 2 years after he was drafted and 3 more years before he was steady in the lineup. Strome was a pick lower and shorter into his career. Kadri was 5 years before he was a decent reg. Gudbranson has been a bust, and had his first 300 games only because he was a number 3 overall...kind of like Cam Barker. Not sure Trouba is a bust.

    Sam Morin?
    Jack Skille?
    Brian Lee?
    Luc Bourdon?
    Kyle Beach?
Cowen? (picked ahead of Leddy, Kulikov, Ellis) Guy only had the games and minutes because OTT was a trainwreck
    Nichuskin?
    Drouin's antics hasn't made him a bust?
How many minutes and prime shifts were forced on Cody Hodgson?
Teubert was a suck, Karlsson and Gardiner were right there
James Sheppard was another one that never should have had so many games played, only had them because of draft position
    Grigs?
    Ryan Murphy?

Several of those guys in my top 15 based on general suckedness, shattered dreams, contract nonsense that held up a franchise, etc.

I should have made youtube vids on sucks.

You could probably make at least three videos, if you go back ten years on the top #15 every year, no doubt Jessie Puljujarvi at #4 is looking like another oily beaut, just like Yaki.

Sam Morin has had some bad injuries. he's still very young and can turn it around. I wouldn't label him suckness just yet.

I love looking back at the busts. In fact, Im a very capable hindsight armchair G.M.
lets not forget the Zach Hamill, picked at #8 a decade ago. Couture and McDonagh picked right after.
    Nikita Filatov
    Scott Glennie
    Dylan Racki McIlrath
    Brandon Gormley
    Joey Hishon
    Duncan Siemens
(lots of terrible GMing by Colorado in this era)
    Griffin Reinhart- doubley bad.......wtf Chiarelli
    Mikhail Grigorenko
    Radek Faksa
    Slater Koekkoek
    Connor Bleakley
are Senyshyn and Zboril already busts even though theyre still kids? I say yes

Ya, its a funny thing how often the higher prospects sometimes don't fair as well as some from the lesser tiers. This business of drafting the hyped-up, #1 guy, is sometimes completely overrated.

bc as i mentioned a few weeks ago on another thread, the pro scouting in all sports is sometimes flawed and overrated. they have 1 job to do. how could be so wrong on a player ?

    alexander daigle !

#1 is pretty well a lock now, it's between #3 and #4 that I worry.

Don Mills Flyers win the OHL cup in OT, 6-5 over the Toronto Red Wings.

The coach of the wings Angelo Catenaro grew up in my neighbourhood and went to school with my older brother.

Cole Caufield (US) scored 2 goals today in the semis giving him 14 for the U18 WC. Leapfrogs Kucherov (‘11) and Kovalchuk (‘01) and ties him with Ovenchicken (‘02) for most ever.
Caufield is tiny- 5’7, 163lbs but he’s a hell of a sniper. 29 goals in 28 games this year for the NDT, that’s more than a notable accomplishment. University of Wisconsin next year, could be a top 10 pick in June.

Detroit agrees to terms with Filip Larsson on entry-level deal
Former sixth-round pick led Denver to NCAA Frozen Four as a freshman...

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with goaltender Filip Larsson on a three-year entry-level contract. The contract will begin with the 2019-20 season.

Larsson, 20, recently completed his freshman season at the University of Denver, where he helped the Pioneers make an appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four after posting back-to-back shutouts in the West Regional. After missing nearly all of the first two months of Denver's season due to injury, Larsson made his college debut on Nov. 24 and was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's Goaltender of the Month for December, in his first full month of collegiate action, and also captured NCHC Goalie of the Week honors on Jan. 14 and Feb. 4. In 22 games as a freshman, Larsson posted a 13-6-3 record, 1.95 goals-against average, 0.932 save percentage and four shutouts. The Stockholm, Sweden, native was named to the 2019 NCHC All-Rookie Team and was also a finalist for the conference's goalie of the year award.

Originally drafted by the Red Wings in the sixth round (167th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Larsson made the move to North America prior to the 2017-18 season, which he spent with the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League. In his lone USHL season, Larsson was named the USHL Goaltender of the Year and to the First All-Star Team after posting the highest save percentage in league history (0.941) and the second-best goals-against-average (1.65) alongside his 18-10-0 record and seven shutouts in 30 games for Tri-City. He also won a silver medal with Sweden at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, appearing in one game during the tournament. Larsson developed in Sweden before the 2017-18 season, splitting time between the Swedish under-18 and under-20 leagues from 2014-17. In his final season of Swedish junior hockey, Larsson posted the best save percentage in the league at 0.939 with a 2.24 goals-against average in 31 appearances with Djurgarden.

I'm a little surprised he's giving up NCAA eligibility this soon. He needs a few years - from what I know - before he'll be ready. I think DU would be better for his development than Toledo.

He'd be the no. 1 guy for an NCAA Championship contender vs. a backup in the AHL - maybe in the ECHL.

I think he is a legit NHL prospect; just one that is several years away. WTFDIK?

Mornin' (here) - Afternoon (there) :)

I suspect you know quite a bit. Thanks for your input. The only thing I can think of is the desperate need for 'growing' goalies in the system... something which is needed. But as you stated, WTFDIK? lol

Its hard to get into the minds of the GM's or the life situations the kids are in, just hope they get this one right.

    Few can match your knowledge.

I know Jason Botterill (a U. Michigan alum) favors NCAA prospects; especially for the later rounds. They can percolate for up to four* years before taking up one of a team's 50 contract slots. That gives you valuable time to determine if they're even worth giving an ELC.

(* Of course the good ones usually come out earlier, but that's when they're ready for the AHL, or even the NHL.)

I saw your boy a few times as a Pioneer. He was clearly the most talented backstop at DU. But as a frosh he didn't get a heavy workload. I thought he'd benefit as a starter this season. Ah, you'll get to draw first-hand impressions as a Walleye.

The West Sweden ... err, Buffalo Sabres have signed spark plug F Arttu Ruotsaleinen from the Finnish Liga. He's a really good prospect but may need time in the AHL to acclimate to the N.A. ice.

Typical for Euros, there's a clause that states it's the NHL or back to the Liga for Arttu. But that's more Liga rules than player insistence. If he goes back to Finland he can go to Rochester after his Finn season is over. He's on a 3-year ELC, and he's one to keep an eye on.

Also, a Finnish lesson here: appending "alainen" is the equivalent of "from". Ruotsa is Finnish for Sweden/Swedish. So, young Arttu brings the Swedish tradition to Buffalo, a.k.a. Sweden West.
