Bears bring in numerous kickers for workout ByMatt Eurich 43 minutes ago The Chicago Bears were not kidding earlier this month when they said they will explore options to improve the kicking situation. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bears are bringing in veteran Nick Folk for a workout. Schefter also noted the team is set to bring in six or seven kickers for the workout. The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport also noted the Bears are bringing in veteran Blair Walsh and former rookie minicamp participant Austin MacGinnis. This is all in response to the struggles surrounding Cody Parkey. Parkey made just 23 of his 30 field goal attempts during the regular season. He also missed three extra points. Then his biggest miss came in the playoffs against the Philadelphia Eagles. With a chance to win the game, Parkey hit the left upright with his kick and then it banged off the crossbar. Parkey had a game earlier in the year against the Detroit Lions where he hit four of his kicks off the uprights. The Bears inked him to a four-year deal worth $15 million last March with $9 million guaranteed after a couple of years of struggles at the position. After his miss in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, Parkey appeared on The TODAY Show less than a week later. Bears head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace noted they were not aware the veteran kicker was making a television appearance at the time. At his year-end press conference, Pace was asked if the team is prepared to bring in competition at the position. "Oh for sure," Pace said. "That's going to be an emphasis of focus for us. There will definitely be competition there." Bringing in a kicker now could be a way for the Bears to move on from Parkey and still search for a young kicker in the draft or in the undrafted market. Folk played collegiately at Arizona and was a sixth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2007. In his three seasons with the Cowboys, he made 64 of his 81 attempts and all 131 of his extra points. He made 26 of his 31 attempts as a rookie and went to a Pro Bowl after the 2007 season. Folk then joined the New York Jets in 2010. He kicked in New York between 2010 and 2016. He made 175 of his 213 attempts during that stretch and 204 of his 206 extra points. He spent four games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2017 and made just six of his 11 attempts and seven of his nine extra points. He did not appear in a game during the 2018 season. Walsh has had a shaky NFL career. A sixth-round pick out of Georgia in 2012 by the Minnesota Vikings, Walsh was a Pro Bowler as a rookie. He made 35 of his 38 attempts that season and all 36 extra points. In five seasons with Minnesota, Walsh made 144 of his 158 attempts and 156 of his 165 extra points. He most notably missed a potential game-winning field goal against the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs following the 2015 regular season. He then spent the 2017 season with the Seahawks. He made 21 of his 29 field-goal attempts and 37 of his 38 extra points. Walsh also did not appear in a game during the 2018 season. Following a successful run at Kentucky, MacGinnis spent time with the Bears in their rookie minicamp last offseason. He connected on 51 of his 64 attempts at the collegiate level between 2014 and 2017. He also made 102 of his 104 extra points. MacGinnis capped off his senior season by making 22 of his 28 field-goal attempts.
I'm not saying "goodbye" until he's gone. But then I'm throwing a party. Let's wait and cross fingers... Pace - get rid of your screw ups, and stop making them. The dead money will hurt, but not as bad as the missed field goals...
You gotta be careful, though - I read this thread and thought I was going to read he had been released, and was being ushered out the door. Gonna be a handful of Bears fans who open this thread disappointedly... We're all just waiting for it to happen. Hell, some of us get so drunk when we're on here at times that you might get us twice.
Except his eventually went in. I've already accepted the fact that he will not be on the final roster and the longer they hold him the less of a cap hit they take. I'm not 100% sure about that last part but I read it somewhere and haven't confimed it. I don't see him on the roster regardless of his presence in camp, and his success, I think he sealed his own fate on that show when Nagy said during the post season presser that his comments were more "me" oriented instead of "we" and that defies everything they are working for as a team. He gone!
My hope is that the new kicker will be competing for the job when the players get back together. And that the old kicker will NOT be part of that competition.
This is the best news since the regular season ended. Unfortunately it may have come too late. Time will tell. I don't like any of those guys we brought in for tryouts. If we can't get Robbie back, we need to bring in the best undrafted kickers coming out of college and have them compete for the job.
Yes, that wouldn't surprise me in the least ... Hey this new guy Chris Blewitt . D'you wanna lay down some money and bet there will be a LOT of memes created about him? I do? Now I have to figure out where I went wrong. Again. This seems to be a never-ending problem ...
They say admitting you have one is the first step. Where did you go wrong? My guess it was that left turn you took out of Green Bay straight to Cickcoggo.
