Right now it appears that Chuck Pagano and Ed Donatell are the front runners

I would be okay either way , perhaps if Check get's the job he sticks around longer but Ed has the time in already with the D so that's a bonus for sure.

    I’m okay with Pagano.

Me too. He has big shoes to fill. Like the Ravens ties.

That was super quick, so much for the offseason.

Pagano is one those guys that was a great DC and terrible HC. Of the nobody available this makes sense. Like Marinelli.

    Anyone have any deep insight?

He wasn’t a terrible HC. Only 1 losing season. 3 playoff appearances with a 3-3 record. Had the Colts on a good path until injuries to Luck derailed it.

    Pagano was the guy I was hoping would end up in Cleveland. {sigh}

It's a big hire to me simply because you end up with a respected football coach that players will listen to and want to play for. That's important because Fangio was in the same mold.

Nagy once again has a defensive coach that allows him to focus the majority of his energy on the offense.

I like the hire a lot the more I think about it.

I think aside from Donatel, he is the best available.

With that, the positive is we're going to keep the same system. There may be some wrinkles here or there, and verbiage is definitely going to change, but the emphasis of what Pagano has run in the past is largely the same as Fangio.

The open question is will the defensive players on this team fall in line with Pagano? I would say that there is little chance we have a Mel Tucker situation. But I think being the top D in the NFL again next year is going to be very unlikely.

Can you explain to me why you said this Mongo?

What they achieved this year isn't sustainable takeaways and few injuries to the major pieces of that defense, now you bring in another unfamiliar DC and although highly respected throughout the league players tend to make them earn that respect. Fangio knew coming into this year what his guys could do and knew how to use them and put them in a position where they could succeed, and they knew what was expected of themselves. There is a learning process that goes along with bringing in a new coach.
The offense now needs to take that step forward to offset a decline in the defense, and the 2nd year in Nagy's system this should be expected.

Rumor is Rob Ryan could be joining Pagano’s staff at the now vacant OLB coach position. Brandon Staley isn’t returning.

Pagano worked under Ryan in Oakland.

If you like fat old guys with long hair...this is good news for you.

I was never impressed with Rob when was with Cleveland. I always got the impression he was only there because of his last name.

But . . . He will have a much, much, much better roster to work with in Chicago than he ever had in Cleveland.

Outside of health I expect this unit to come back really strong next season.

They are really young on the defensive side with an average age of 26 or so.

Losing Amos would hurt...losing Callahan too but both are replaceable parts.

You have some younger guys like Bilal Nichols and Roy Robertson-Harris that contributed well in small doses that should only improve.

Hicks and Mack are in their prime. So is Goldman. Trevathan isn’t showing any decline. Roquan is only gonna get better.

Leonard Floyd actually got better as the year went on and could become a strength moving forward...even though I have no problem with the Bears finding competition at his spot.

The secondary was a big question mark to me the past two seasons but they’ve delivered and delivered. I think you’d be wise to draft a corner and get some depth here but I don’t feel bad about it at all. Kyle Fuller went from bust to wow this guy is playing well but for how long to I guess he’s legit to wow I can trust this guy in the span of 32 games.

Honestly I think the only thing that stops this unit from being Top 5 at least next season is health. So if you believe is a god pray to him, her, or it. Or rub your good luck charm.

I have a ton of confidence in this defense and if the offense makes any strides into next season...and we get a kicker you can trust....this team is primed for a run.

I’m not a fan of his. Not a fan of how he runs his mouth at opposing players while standing on the sideline.

Loved his Dad...can’t really stand him or his brother.

But it doesn’t worry me when he’s just a position coach.

Agreed. I think being the #1 D again is unlikely, because a lot of stars aligned this year to make it happen as tuna said. BUT I think BWW is spot on too, young core, scheme doesn't change too much, the guys will be hungry after getting bounced the way they did, and Pagano is a respected coach for a reason. My expectations are a top 5 defense, assuming Pace doesn't shit the bed and trade or lose the majority of the talent.

Gotta admit, im a little surprised Donatell hasn't been announced by Denver yet. He is without a team at this point if im correct.

I mention that because Donatell's outcome changes a little how i feel about all this. If he isn't back then the worst case scenario has come true, both Fangio & Donatell are gone. There's no way to spin that into a good thing. Fangio speaks for itself and any coach that can make Prince Amukamara look like a competent CB is a coach you have to keep.

Just looking at the Pagano hire in isolation, im not sure how much better of an outcome you get than this tbh. Not necessarily cos Pagano is so amazing, but because there really wasn't a lot else jumping out at you. Who else was out there that was so much better to pick than Pagano? Vance Joseph? Meh. If you're talking about outside the building hires this is prob as good as the Bears good do under the circumstances.

But it does come back to Donatell. The Bears interviewed him and felt he wasn't the guy. The fact he's still on the market shows the Bears had first crack and prob said no. Thats a big decision. One that'll be revisited if Pagano doesn't work out.

Oh hell no. Fuck Rob Ryan. TBH id be surprised if this happens, even if he and Pagano do go back. Ryan is a loud mouth and a jerk. Look at what Nagy has tried to create in that locker room. Ryan doesn't look like a fit at all. Really hope this doesn't happen.

I feel the same way. He lasted longer in NO a year longer than he should've done as well. I always thought he was trading off his family reputation to some extent.

I think Fangio and the Broncos have bigger fish to fry filling the more important OC vacancy. I could only imagine how that conversation went when Kubiak withdrew.
