Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky is slowly starting to silence the critics. After his impressive performance in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions, he can now add an award to his mantle. The NFL announced on Wednesday that Trubisky won NFC Player of the Week honors for his performance against Lions this past Sunday. Trubisky becomes just the eighth quarterback in team history to win the award. The last Bears quarterback to win the award was Josh McCown back in 2013 as he was playing in place of the injured Jay Cutler. The last Bears player to win the award was Jordan Howard in Week 8 of the 2016 season. Howard went on to appear in the Pro Bowl that season as a rookie for Chicago. The young quarterback completed 23 of his 30 passing attempts for 355 yards with three touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 148.6 against the Lions. He also ran for a touchdown in the game. What is even more impressive is that Trubisky did not turn the football over in the game. Trubisky hit on throws throughout the game on Sunday that he has struggled with at times this season. He and veteran wideout Allen Robinson also appeared to have found a connection. Robinson missed the previous two games with a groin injury before catching six passes for 133 yards with two touchdowns against the Lions. Trubisky also found rookie wideout Anthony Miller five times for 122 yards with one touchdown. Trubisky felt good about his performance after the game. "It was probably one of my best games," Trubisky said after the game ended. "Just felt really comfortable out there. Thought the O-line played fantastic today. We got open on the outsides. It was just me doing my job: sitting back there and getting the ball to my playmakers. Just felt really comfortable today. I put the ball where it needed to go. It's all a credit to my teammates and the work we put in in practice." The second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft has now thrown for 2,304 yards with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions this season. He also currently sits with a 101.6 quarterback rating through the first nine games of the year. He threw for just 2,193 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions in 12 starts last season. His progression from Year 1 to Year 2 has been evident throughout this season. In Sunday's game against the Lions, Trubisky displayed great footwork, mechanics and poise in the pocket. The pressure will now be on him to continue to play at a high level in the final seven games of the year. Chicago sits with a 6-3 record and atop the NFC North division. Trubisky will be back on primetime television on Sunday night when the Bears take on the Minnesota Vikings. Just a few short days later the team will be back on national television on Thanksgiving Day against the Lions.
It definitely was the best game of his career. But like the Bucs game the Lions didn’t even bother to try and play defense. This week he’s going up against a legitimate defense so if he can manage to do a fraction of what he did against the lions without mistakes it’ll be a good thing.
