Per Ian Rappoport.... Bears have signed Eddie Goldman to a 4 year extension worth $42 million with 25 of that guaranteed.
Wow, I haven’t really paid very close attention to the Bears the last couple years... was he really worth it? That makes him one of the highest-paid DTs in the league I think
Yeah, buddy. It does make him a highly paid DT. However, I'm interested in seeing the way it's paid out (as I am with the Mack deal). Bears have a ton of money right now, and know they won't have a ton of money three years from now. Pay the man now, front-load what you can, and use the space while you've got it. That, and with the salary cap going up every year, there's a new benchmark set every year. Goldman is, as of now, an indispensable part of our defense. Pay him and lock him up. It's hard to say precisely that he's the 12th best DT in the league, because of the different fronts and responsibilities out there. But he's definitely in the top tier of NT's, so I'd say he belongs right around there, especially considering that he'll be the 19th highest paid next year, and then the 25th highest paid the next year, and then... I think it's great. He's worth the money, his deal is done, and the cap space is being used. Great news.
When you include all d linemen his average salary is 26th 2 mil per season less than Hicks. I think it’s a good spot.
Last year they paid Hicks just before the season began and he rewarded them by going out and being a beast on the field. If Goldman does the same thing we are in a good spot. This defense has difference makers at every level.....if they stay healthy they could be really, really good.
When he's on the field, he's effective and worth it. Problem is, he's not always on the field; though last year was refreshing he played in 15 games.
Are we starting to doubt that he wasn't hit by body-snatchers? Or maybe he's just growing and progressing as a GM? Whatever it is (they're equally as likely, right?), I'm liking it. Keep it up, Pace.
That's great news Yeah watching that front 7 grow since they converted to a 3-4 front was painful at times, promising in others, but now it seems some big pieces are in place on that line and proven, the safety position is looking it's best in 10+ years, and corners are more than capable. Then Pace goes all in and picks up a wild card in Mack that will likely raise that level of play between those positions. Fuck it go get'em boys! Go Bears!
Hard to say, so for now im just gonna stick to my default position. I know ive ripped Pace more than most but i just call it like i see it. I have no problem giving credit for good moves, like this one. Its just that historically Pace has made far more shitty moves than good ones. Here's hoping he has progressed, but im gonna hold off on saying that until he starts proving it in the win column.
