Agreed....They changed to a much better look, though I liked the helmet logo better when the flag was smaller.

I'm just glad the Browns didn't have a bakery as the leading industry when they were founded...The Cleveland Bakers...not a great ring to it. Pittsburgh basically threw an advertisement for US Steel on the side of their helmet and made it their logo. Iconic, now that it is the INDUSTRY trademark, but at the time it seems it was merely a gesture to the largest company in their city, of which probably funded much of the team.

I'm not judging...ours is the name of their first head coach..so, not much imagination used there either.

I'm just glad we didn't choose some random animal and stick their picture on the side of the helmet...I mean..how many lions are there in the United States that are not in zoos?

The Cardinals?? It's the state bird of Illinois, where the team originated in Chicago..but as soon as the team crossed state lines, the logo should have stopped at the border.

The Rams, which ironically started in Cleveland and migrated away from an area not known for having any sheep farms, or mountains, of which many rams lived. Actually Denver Rams would make the most sense...but instead they chose a bronco, which isn't even a real animal, it's simply an untrained horse...for many years, the football team looked untrained as well...so it does make some sense.

Panthers? That is a subfamily, not even a species...the Jaguar belongs to the Panthera family, as do BLACK Panthers. However, the only member of the panther family that resides in the US is the Cougar, of which there are no NFL teams with the mascot. There is a Florida Panther, which is actually a subspecies of the Cougar, but a Florida team decided on Jaguar, thus giving a Carolina team the option of Panther...This is really confusing to me.

There are some birds that really make sense...Eagles, Falcons, Seahawks...these are birds that are predominant in the city's (if not the entire nation) for which the team dons the head of each...

The Bears, there black bears residing in Illinois...again, it makes sense.

Patriots, obvious choice with the revolutionary war history in the state and specifically in Boston.

The Bills, well, when your city is named Buffalo, what else are you going to call your football team? Buffalo wings weren't invented until 1964, so there was no way to incorporate chicken wings into a teams logo that began play in 1960.

Another anomaly, the Raiders...The Buccaneers make PERFECT sense, but the Raiders based on a pirate wearing a football helmet...Well, piracy was a part of the Caribbean and East Indies predominantly, which geographically is no where near the west coast. I don't know of any pirates based in California to speak of...The Buccs are in the heart of pirate country, so that makes perfect sense actually.

Unfortunately, even the Ravens (The resting place of one, Edgar Allen Poe) has some true meaning..for a bird..

Texas is known for their, WE ARE TEXANS attitude, so, having the largest population of Cowboys makes sense, as well as merely shouting out to the world we are Texans...

Logos are an anomaly of ideas...I wish they would pay more attention to detail when doling them out.

What other team in the league uses "The Helmet" as there primary log? It has been the team's "logo" since 1970. 48 years of having a helmet for the logo...It will be difficult to change the helmet to white as Lyman suggests.

They began their existence wearing white helmets and only switched to orange ones to accomodate night games under the lights.

    So noted.

It was my understanding that Paul Brown liked the Bowling Green uni's, and switched to orange helmets like they had because he liked the look, and because he thought it would make it easier for his QB's to spot the receivers running downfield....

EDIT: Count me as one that does not believe they will ever switch back to white helmets...Unless maybe as a "throwback" one time a year thing. But even that would surprise me...The Browns getting rid of the orange would be like the Cowboys getting rid of the star. It's not gonna happen...

Paul Brown may have, indeed, liked the look, but the NFL drove the change of helmets from white to orange to accomodate the fledgling TV market in the early 50's. Keep in mind, at that time, there was no color TV and during televised night games, it was easier for the for the early TV cameras to differentiate between an orange helmet and the white ball that was used at that time for night games.

The Jags changed their helmet back to black. That being said, I don't think Black is the answer either. Hoenstly once I got used to the weired 2-tone I liked it better than the black. Not saying it was good but I think I'd like to see them using gold helmets with a thicker outline to distinguish the logo. Or maybe go logo-less.

I suck at multi-quoting so here is my .02 on everything:

I love the Navy/White Rams helmet. IDK why they're hanging onto gold as a trim color.

Vikings helmet is really good. The matte finish and the shading make the horn pop.

IMHO, the Bucs uni's are kind of ugly, but play really well on an HD TV, and that is part of the evaluation process when they're deciding on new uni's.

The all orange helmet, while they say that you have to "earn your stripes", I believe will be a way to not only test how they look on TV but also to continue to gage fan reaction for the next uniform change.

My personal thought is, as classic as the uniform is, these are not the Browns. Its great that the city kept the name, but it should have kept it only to honor it and moved forward. I would like to see the team make the orange darker and metallic, widen the stripe (akin to tOSUs widened stripe alternate helmet), and add silver back as an official team color and have it just as a thin outline. Can still keep the brown/white combo to accompany, but I think the use of the colors could pay homage to Cleveland's industrial past, but while keeping the name there will be part of the heritage of the team while giving this new group a new identity (beyond whatever these current uni's are supposed to be).

Yeah, they were generic unis, but it was only for 6 years....the other 68 seasons have had orange helmets.

(edit) Correction...it was only 4 years

Browns coach Hue Jackson said OT Donald Stephenson is incurring fines for missing mandatory minicamp.

Stephenson's absence evidently wasn't pre-cleared. It's not about the contract for a player who just signed in March. Stephenson is probably the favorite for swing tackle duties, but he's not helping himself upsetting the coach in June.

I have to admit I like what Dorsey has done in shaping up the roster for the upcoming season. IMHO Every position group has been upgraded significantly. Not just with a few starters, but more importantly added depth at all positions. The current roster is possibly the most complete one the Browns will put on the field to start the season since before the dark times. IMHO This years group will be more competitive than ALL the naysayers are indicating. This team may actually be worth watching this year.

Here's to a great season opener (and a little story to go along with it) September 9:cheers:

Bob walked into his favorite sports bar around 9:58 PM. He sat down next to a blonde at the bar and stared up at the TV.

The 10 PM news was coming on. The news crew was covering the story of a man on the ledge of a large building preparing to jump. The blonde looked at Bob and said:"Do you think he'll jump?".

Bob said: "You know, I bet he'll jump."

The blonde replied: "Well, I bet he won't."

Bob placed a $20 bill on the bar and said: "You're on!"

Just as the blonde placed her money on the bar the guy on the ledge did a swan dive off the building, falling to his death. The blonde was very upset, but willingly handed her $20 to Bob.

"Fair's fair.” she said, “Here's your money."

Bob replied, "I can't take your money. I saw this earlier on the 5 PM news, so I knew he would jump."

The blonde replied: "I did, too, but I didn't think he'd do it again."
