G.M.O. - 2018 NFL Draft

Yeah, getting sniped is really annoying, because realistically you can't know every single player who might be worth any given pick (especially when we're a month or so out from the actual draft). I think my draft board started at about 30 guys I realistically thought might be available with my picks and I got lucky and never actually got sniped. But it became a close run thing. When it came to picking Cichy in the 6th, I had him and one other guy who I had any clue about whatsoever.

You can take consolation in three things:
    a) I'm mostly being a bit mean in my evaluations because you asked for it!
    b) I clearly don't know shit.
    c) If you were running the whole show, you would have all of us working for you giving you information on who to pick.

With this group of diverse opinions and bull headed stances, the information given to the man in charge would most likely only serve to confuse the ever loving shit out of him, lol.

With that being said, my favorite part of the forums is getting to see everyone's opinion, and then getting the chance to discuss how they came to that conclusion. I find a lot of value in everyone's breakdowns and the ones that I disagree with serve me particularly well because it forces me to challenge my own perceptions and biases on certain prospects.

The Houston Texans have wrapped up their draft -

Rd 1(31) - CB: Jaire Alexander, Louisville
I traded into the bottom of the first to make sure that I could nab Alexander before the Browns went on the clock at the top of the second. I originally had no second round pick to trade, but after signing Allen Robinson in free agency I was able to deal Will Fuller for Chicago's second round pick (and a conditional 2019). I lost Jonathan Joseph in free agency, but adding T.J. Carrie and drafting Jaire will fill the void nicely.

    Rd 3(7) - OG/C: Scott Quessenberry, UCLA
If the Texans had their original first round selection I would have been looking at interior lineman as a potential early pick. Quessenberry was a player that backed up his film with a solid combine and has long term starters potential. I think he has a chance to go earlier than this spot at the end of April.

Round 3(16) - Traded for Tyrod Taylor
I traded a mid third and and 7(4) to get Tyrod Taylor and 5(29). I wanted to add an arm in free agency or the draft, but after making the trade with Chicago to get a second round pick it made more sense to trade for Taylor and gather up that 5th round pick. This is basically an insurance policy for Watson coming off of injury.

Rd 4(3) - ILB: Christian Sam, Arizona State
Christian Sam is the one interior linebacker that I believe is being overlooked some, but if he is it might be by his own doing. There are some questions about his practice/work ethic that may keep him down some on war boards. He profiles well in our scoring and at 4(3) represents very solid value.

Rd 5(29) - WR: DaeSean Hamilton, Penn State
I wanted to take a pair of receivers late in the draft, but I was really taken back by how devalued the position was in this mock. There may not be elite talent at the position in this class, but there are some really sound options and potential long term starters in this group. Hamilton slides into a possession receivers role and the closest thing to a security blanket that I could get for Watson.

Rd 6(3) - WR: Darren Carrington, Utah
Darren Carrington profiles well in our scoring and I think he is being undervalued quite a bit going into this draft. Snagging him now solidified my receiving group going into the off-season with Hopkins, Robinson, Hamilton and Carrington.

Rd 6(32) - DE: JoJo Wicker, Arizona State
I wanted to add some depth to the front at some point in this draft but right now I believe that potential 3-4 ends in this class have some buyer beware to them. JoJo's value is probably dead on in the middle of the 6th but it adds a body with long term potential at a position that needed a body.

Rd 6(37) - OLB: Ebenezer Ogundeko, Tennessee State
This is my boom/bust pick (usually end up with one somewhere in every draft). Ogundeko has some quality pass rushing traits but comes with character question marks after being dismissed from Clemson. Adding a solid situational pass rusher with the chance to be a developmental starter in the 6th round always makes me feel good.

Rd 6(40) - RB: Martez Carter, Grambling State
This was my late plan B selection if I somehow missed out on Chase Edmonds. I added Orleans Darkwa in free agency to pair with D'Onta Foreman and I wanted to find a multifaceted back to add to the mix. Carter can serve as a change of pace back, kick returner and potential 3rd and long weapon.

How does this fit in with your roster needs after free agency? Wynn can plug a hole from day one. Hill can contribute, but leaning on a rookie CB is usually asking for trouble, and you're probably not expecting much from the late rounders in 2018. Is your roster complete, or do you think there are still remaining needs?

That's a whole lot of rookies. How many can Dallas realistically fit on the 53-man roster?

Good list of players. My favorite part is the extra stuff at the bottom. The three incoming players from trades will have to learn Indy's schemes, but it won't be NFL 101 in training camp like it will be with the rookies. The future 3rd is the icing on the cake.

It's nice to read how your free agency and trade strategy impacted your draft plans, as the GMO is the full picture rather than just the mock draft. Agreed that it was a bit surprising to see so many WRs go later than what we might have expected. We'll have to see how all the prospects pan out, but it does appear to be a huge middle-tier group in this year's class. Nice job taking advantage of it, getting two guys who will contribute sooner rather than later in the late 5th and early 6th.

Damn I didn't watch much of Wynn and the tape I saw was a pass heavy game. I love his hands and feet though. I may have to go back and watch a little more tape and see if I see what you do. At 6'2.5" people don't seem to think he is a tackle. But his arms are long enough and at 313 he is like the ideal weight for a tackle. His pass pro is so damn clean and he always seems to get his hands inside and on the defender first. He seems to do a great job of handling stunts and handing guys off as well. I sort of thought as an athletic LG who maybe has tackle upside it was a really nice pick in that spot.
