I (unfortunately?) watched a decent of last years reps in pre-season. Whether it was in person or on you tube or tweeter... One thing I remember was thinking how bad Glennon looked with the first team and how "above average for a rookie' Trubisky seemed to be with the 2nd team. Even though I was told the Bears had no thoughts about starting Trubisky last year, I think we all kinda knew Glennon was going to be a disaster. With that, do you think him not getting the first team reps hurt? And if so, do you think that led to losses? More, if it did, who do you hold accountable for that? i suppose it would be easy to blame Fox. But, I do recall Pace naming Glennon the starter when he picked him up. Third question, do you believe Pace influenced Fox to start Glennon? Fourth, do you think the fact that we had Glennon on the roster at all should be held against Pace? Last question, we had a definitive crack at Jimmy G. WE passed. What the actual deal would have been... who knows. But he could have been our guy instead of Glennon. You fault Pace for not landing him?
Not getting first team reps hurt, sure. In a perfect world, a one year starter in college taken #2 overall can't have enough. I don't think it led to losses, I think the losses were inevitable. I cant think of one game last year where John Fox and Frodo played to win. I know that's cliche; but playing "not to lose" helped them against the AFC north, where we saw all of the Steelers not show up (they do we're picking top 5), same with the Bengals. I think they still get run over in the division and the other 6 games of the season. 60% Pace, 40% Fox. If Fox had any balls, Glennon would have been gone after 2 of his first three passes were intercepted in week one. After week 4 or 5, whenever Glennon got cut I'm pretty sure Fox knew he was coaching for his life. Enter Frodo's bad playcalling and injuries and you have a recipe for 4-12. Pace did, but I also think Fox knew his options were a one year collegiate or a guy with some NFL starting experience. However, I have no idea when Glennon was yanked why Fox didn't divert to Sanchize. I don't, and the bears make it worse being minimally transparent. I understand chasing Glennon. He was the attractive "unknown" who still had "youth and potential." And a slight giraffe-looking retardation. We're about to see somebody do the same with AJ McCarron. Except Tampa figured out he couldn't play qb, so you'd think taking Jameis #1 overall said something about Glennon. Kinda wish Pace saw that part. But, figure the smoke screen factor for Trubisky. Nobody knew the bears were taking him that night. If he was Pace's guy a long time back, signing Glennon for that amount was necessary to say "hey on draft day we're not taking a qb!" I'm calling revisionist history on this one..... Pace drafted Trubisky when New England put 2 First rounders as Jimmy's price tag. That's 3 last year and the first this year. The Pats ran out of time as 2017 was the contract year. That's why he sold for a 2nd rounder; so while its easy to say the bears missed out, they really didn't. They had Trubisky at that point. I wouldn't have given up 2 firsts for an unproven player, I think many of us wouldn't nor if you were the GM--would you stake your career on that; Pace got an extension with Mitch, buying him time. He probably doesn't get extended if Jimmy shits the bed as QB. Also, sure--Jimmy looked good at times in the Bay, but that success doesn't mean he would have duplicated it here. And the flip side of the coin, what if Pace did ship out 2 first rounders for him and he stunk up 2017 in a bears uniform? That means no first this year and QB still a need as Garappollo walked to FA. How much would Pace be getting killed for that move? A lot more than much of the griping we're doing about him now.
I don’t think Trubisky’s lack of first team reps early on lead to losses. I think if he was given the starting job going into the season we might have won a game or 2 more only because Glennon was so horrible. But the offense was still basic and lacked playmakers so who knows. I hold everyone accountable. Pace for picking Glennon as the Vet bridge QB and failing to add any difference makers to the offense. Fox for picking a shit ass OC and trying to bring offensive football back to the 80’s. I blame Glennon for folding under the pressure of playing in front of a high round pick. I also blame bad luck. Cam going down hurt. How much? I don’t know but he could have been a good weapon for a rookie QB. As far as Pace naming Glennon the starter I don’t think that meant much at all. Fox had control of who played. He could have made Trubisky the starter at any time. Once Glennon was signed I don’t believe Pace had any influence on who played and who didn’t. Fox isn’t the type to allow a young GM to dictate to him who plays and who sits. He takes the players given to him and does what he chooses. I do hold Pace accountable for Glennon. He admitted to having his eye on him from the time he came into the league. Define definitive crack? It was obvious that the offseason asking price was sky high for Jimmy G. If there even was a price. He fell into San Fran’s lap when Bill was given a stern NO on resigning him. I don’t fault Pace for not acquiring Jimmy. I will fault him for taking Trubisky if he isn’t the answer at the position for the next 15 years or so.
Fox has a well documented history of hating giving rookies playing time. Did it hurt Aaron Rodgers to not get first team Reps for the first three years of his career?
Just because that's the asking price they had at the time, it doesn't mean that is where the deal would have gotten done... The point I'm making is Jimmy was up for sale. We had no QB's on our roster. instead of getting him, we went out and spent 18 million on a turd even Lovie rejected. Sure, later we drafted Trubisky. And it is quite likely we wouldn't have had spent the draft pick(s) used to get him on Jimmy. But at the end of the day, I think w could have gotten him. Time will tell Glennon/Trubisky was a better deal than Jimmy G.
I looked at Jimmy G and Trubisky as both unproven players. The difference was that Jimmy had a few years behind a great QB. That goes a way. He would have been worth a 1st round pick. I wouldn't say 2 1st rounders though. Now with the hindsight of what he did with SF; I think he is much better. He immediately made them better all by himself. I am not sure we can say that about Trubisky.
