If you think the Detroit Red Wings were in a bad spot this offseason with regard to their salary cap issues, just wait until next summer. The 2018 offseason is setting up to be the worst yet for Ken Holland and the Red Wings. Detroit’s present situation is not enviable. The team is right up […]

The nhl doesn't want to create a two tier league, but the yotes still can't spend to the cap. They have to find creative ways to give teams more options to spend over the cap.

Luxury tax is a common solution, how about losing a 2nd round pick for the first $8M over? A first rounder for the next $8M. You lose an automatic 4th round pick for going a penny over, and a 3rd rounder for only going $4M over.

There has to be a way to figure something out that's halfway between a cap and what baseball has. Many teams getting punished for their hard work and scouting, not being able to retain salaries of certain players.
The success of Vegas is directly a result from issues related to the cap. Players that never would've been up for grabs in past expansion drafts.

Detroit has to spend a couple years unwinding their contract situation.
Worst thing that happened to them was going 7 games against Chicago in 13'. Kenny still thought the window was open and it put off seasons like this for a couple years. They ended up wasting a promising and deep prospect pool when trade rates were high, ended up losing them for nothing and wasted space and ice time on vets.

It's going to take 2 years just to tear it all down. Probably best to let Nyquist walk and to get creative unloading Helm and Zetterberg (which I don't expect Kenny to do). Tatar will get a nice return as he can finish.

Keep DeKeyser, Larkin, Mantha, Abdelkader, and Mrazek around and dump the rest over the next 48 months says the voices and I
