My apologies for polluting your forum with a non-football, personal question. My son is doing an internship next Summer in the West Mifflin area of Pittsburgh, and I am trying to see what areas of the city we should be looking at for housing for him. He's a college student, so I'd like it to be near some interesting (i.e. fun) venues, but a clean, safe area that is not too far of a commute to where he's working. I planned to check Craigslist in the Spring for apartment sublets, but I have no frame of reference to know whether a place is a good part of town to be in or not. Are there any parts of town we should avoid? Any tips would be most appreciated. Thanks!
West Mifflin isn't a bad area although Century III Mall could use some help. Homestead is pretty close and it has the Waterfront area with a Dave & Buster's, restaurants, etc. Other decent nearby areas are Pleasant Hills, South Park and Baldwin. He could also commute from the South Side...over 100 bars down there. Good luck to him!
I personally would stay away from Homestead for living purposes. Can be a very dangerous place. Baldwin, South Park and Pleasant Hills are nice areas for the most part.
Just buy your kid tons of Steelers gear to wear and he will be protected by everyone who breathes air in Pittsburgh.
I don't live in Pittsburgh so I won't answer the question, but last week I rode through it on a bus to Columbus from New York and vice versa and it really is a beautiful city. Heinz Field is a prominent feature of the area where I drove through and the city blends into its mountainous region of the state beautifully. The fans who live in Pittsburgh now must take for granted being able to see the place where our team plays up to ten times a year up close and personal. I didn't even step into the stadium and I still welled with pride.
West Mifflin isn't a bad area. My grandparents and an ex were from around there, and it always seemed pretty calm.
Hopefully your son will see the light and be decked out in Black and Gold by the time he leaves Pittsburgh, or better yet he will decide to move to the Burgh and get season tickets.
Thanks again for the input way back when. We ended up renting a place for this Summer in the Brentwood/Baldwin area. I really liked that area, as well as Mt. Pleasant and South Park. If you see a young man sporting Ravens or Capitals gear, or Tennessee orange, please don't abuse him. Much.
