I have three words: Not good enough. Quarterback play - Not good enough. You guys can post all the stats and comparisons you want. You can cite all the phycho babble you want. The QB play last night was not good enough. O-line play - Not good enough. I don't care that most of them were backups. We WILL see backups starting at some point this year and they were not good enough. TE's and WR's - Not good enough. Running game - Not good enough. (Although, TD's guy Dayes looked decent). Thank Gawd for Williams' defense or I would really be pissed after watching that mess.
Agreed. Regardless of who gets the start, we're in for a long season. It's either: A - Brock Osweiler, who will throw away winnable games B - DeShone Kizer, who will go through rookie growing pains C - Cody Kessler, who will not produce an electric offense or ton a points Regardless of who they choose (ABBO), the running game needs to be front and center of each game plan. I think Hue will name Kizer the starter. I obviously think it's more prudent to go with Kessler because you can give him a short leash and move to DeShone if/when he struggles. You can't go the other way with Kizer being the starter. Osweiler, under no circumstance, can be the starter Week 1. I think run blocking and pass blocking was good, actually. I think the problem was sloppy penalties. They need to clean up their game. Crow > Dayes > Johnson Duke Johnson Jr. should be moved primarily to slot receiver duty, or split backfield with the primary carrier. Isaiah Crowell needs to stay healthy and get at least 280 touches in the running game. Matt Dayes should be the primary backup to Crowell.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree that it really wasn't good enough. There were some nice plays here and there, but far too many inconsistencies on offense.... Just keep in mind that there is no gameplanning. These preseason games are ALL brutal to watch. It's not just a Browns thing. I watched a ton of ugly football this weekend. It will look better (hopefully) when we put real game plans in...(crossing fingers) We have to clean up those penalties... If I was giving out game balls, I'd go with Matt Dayes and Joe Shobert. The defense in general played really well. I love the aggressiveness on those blitz packages....Obviously plenty of work to do, but I'm not discouraged by that performance. We are young. We will make mistakes. But I liked the effort and hustle these guys play with. I saw some teams that most people would call "playoff caliber", and their performance without an offensive gameplan was just as ugly as what I saw from Cleveland...Take the Giants for instance.
Schobert has been fantastic this preseason. Looks like a completely different player under Williams than he did under Horton. I hope he earns the starting MLB spot this year and continues to play at a high level.
Also, I thought Jabril Peppers looked REALLY good on those punt returns...He's gonna be a helluva weapon for us in that capacity...Thank goodness, because it was sorely needed.
That's sucks for Carder, I hate seeing injuries...however, I think Schobert was on his way to beating him out anyway. I am more worried about depth than anything else right now...I think we will be signing a LB in the coming days.
Tank has been a "feel good story" ever since he arrived in Cleveland. But, I agree that Schobert was probably beating him out for the starter's position. Depth is always an issue for teams in the midst of rebuilding. I'm sure that the Browns will add depth (or maybe a starter or two) when the cutdown to the final 53's take place.
Another reason Browns fans should remain optimistic, in spite of an ugly offensive performanc: That was not our starting O-line playing last night. I agree with Irish. Schobert was on his way to becoming the starter anyway...It's been a tough pre-season on middle linebackers. I hated to see Raekwon McMillan get hurt last week in Miami too....Tank Carder might not have beaten out Schobert, but I'm certain they were counting on him to be a big contributor, especially on the special teams unit....That does suck. Ya gotta feel bad for the guy. He was finally getting a real opportunity.
Going to post this here for later - If the Colts decide to not make Stephen Morris the #2 or possible week one starter in the event that Andrew Luck can't play, the Browns should be considering options to acquire him.
I wouldn't. Stephen Morris has developed better than expected since college but I am not a fan at all. Morris' ceiling is a career backup. Kessler is better.
My score on Morris coming out of college is/was much higher than Kessler and if I had to tab one of the two (at the time they were drafted) with the label of career back-up it would be/have been Kessler, and I said as much on the boards during the draft in regards to Cody. If the Colts are not looking to keep Morris in the fold it's a prime opportunity to work a cost share on Osweiler and move him to Indy and get Stephen in return, especially if Luck is going to be sidelined to start the season.
My score on Morris was undraftable. Kessler I had as a possible late-round target. He wasn't like Hackenberg but he fell in the same category of potential hype ignoring production.
I know I definitely didn't have him as a Hack comparable, lol. I think I had him ranked a bit higher than about 4 quarterbacks that went in his class. I'd have to dig it up but off memory the first thing that comes up is his throwing style and his hand placement prior to release. Both scored real high and they are both in the style that I like to see out of potential pro quarterbacks. I believe his entire throwing base and footwork got high scores as well. I get a chance tomorrow I'll dig up what I have on him in detail, but I know there were enough positives there for me to view him as draftbable and I'm thinking it was a late 5th, early 6th round pick.
