I've been away from the board for quite some time. Of all things, i've been paying far more attention to my league worst Whitesox than our Bears. What does that say? But Trubisky breathed life into my Bears fandom last night! That was fun.
When have we ever had a new car that was a fully loaded luxury vehicle instead of an economy two door barebones model?
I am not ready or willing to make that call after 1, albiet very good, game. I hope like hell all the optimism that is suddenly sprouting around here blooms.
I'm not saying the kid is gonna be Aaron Rodgers. What I'm saying, and what can't be denied, is his physical tools and potential make him something this franchise has never seen in a QB it's drafted for itself. Name any QB this team has drafted....and physicially speaking....Trubisky is superior to them. What that translates in to no one is gonna know for a while. He could become injury prone....he could never learn to read defenses correctly. Anything could happen. But from a standpoint of just raw potential....we haven't seen this before.
There is a pleasingly long list of options i could say were the most impressive thing about Trubisky last night. But the first one i would point to was just how poised and composed he looked out there. I mean right from the start. That speaks to temperament and its a really good sign. I know it was just preseason week 1, but for Trubisky this was a pretty big deal. His first game in the pros, a LOT of hopes and expectations about his future career. And he couldn't have handled it better. In fact if anyone it was Glennon who looked tight to me. There were other things too. We saw the athleticism and the accuracy, although tbh this was evident on his college tape. But his footwork was also very sharp and i loved how more than once he climbed the pocket upon feeling the rush but also kept his eyes downfield. Very nice. And the throws on the move were highly impressive. Cutler was always excellent on the rollout but successive coaches failed him by never calling them, even when our OL stunk and he was a sitting duck in the pocket. Loggains had better not make the same f_ckup or im on a plane over there to kick him in the axe-wound! The level of competition is fair reason to keep a degree of context, sure. And there are def things to improve upon. I'd have to watch again but the windup & delivery is perhaps a little elongated right now. Thats something to work on with his coaches. And when they were in hurry up at the end i really didn't see a lot of hurrying frankly. That needs to change when the games matter. But all-in-all a hugely encouraging first game. I dont know about the rest of you, but that was something i seriously needed.
Has anyone ever seen 3rd gen and Dimmn post on the same thread? hmmmmm Oh those days of the Mad Bomber! and Dimmn. I'm with 3rd and without going out over my ski's but there was a lot to like in that performance. Those throws looked like ropes being controlled by an xbox controller and the spin move in the open field was certainly out of Madden lol. The fact that they gave him those rollouts by design obviously to slow down their blitzing of a young inexperienced QB was smart, so give some credit there. He looked exceptionally well doing it as well as comfortable. When I saw him in camp hitting barrel after barrel I was impressed especially when he spun and threw a quick strike, but I tempered my expectations with that because those targets were static and football is dynamic, but this game eased that fear somewhat, but even still I ask myself with that talent why is it in school he started so few games??? and ask myself what am I missing???
It was definitely nice to watch a bears QB make highlights for a good reason. I'm not ready to call him a savior but the future of this team is looking bright. I also liked the D last night. They didn't miss many tackles.
Just back from Sydney. Didn't get to see the game. But have read all the posts, local media, and espn. Seems like it was a good game overall. As a guy who hasn't watched, seems like even though Glennon shit the bed, the Bears first teams still played them to basically a draw. The Trubisky came in and tore up their 2nd team. Then our 4th string defense shit the bed. If that's actually there case, I see two really big positives out there: First team D, and Trubisky,
Funny that... Dimm was the entire reason I signed up on the CBS boards and started posting. I lurked there for a long time, but Dimm's unrelenting mancrush on Rexy during the 2007 year, and then his pissing and moaning during the 2008 QB training camp competition are what spurred me to register so that I could argue with him.
Guys, I am right there with most of you. It's hard not to get excited, even though it is preseason. Ev points out the windup, there were some throws into double coverage too, if my drunk ass remembers correctly. BUT, he's not starting for a while, they've made that clear, they want him to sit and learn. So this was a chance for him to learn. But rather than learning here he just tore it up. That works too. But the athleticism and accuracy impressed me the most -tuna mentioned the barrels and you could see it here. Also, after years of shitwad falling back and popping it 70 yards downfield for a tossup-- it was nice to see him step up and have pretty decent mechanics overall. This team will struggle to win, but Floyd's sack, the 1st team D being ok, and Trubisky were enough to give me some hope for the future. Also, I know it's preseason, but what the hell is up with Thompson going down with 19 seconds left rather than getting out of bounds. Again, drunk as shit but wasn't he untouched going to the ground? And didn't he drop a few that hit him RIGHT in the fucking hands? This kid shouldn't see the field, but he had some decent kick returns.
Here is every throw he made. I am not seeing any hint of bad judgement, throwing into a bad coverage, or wind-up issues. His release is quick as fuck
I think what Ev is alluding to into triple coverage happens at 3:08 to Thomspon and while it appears to close fast he did have a nice window to throw into. BTW that was the play they threw a flag for spinning that ball.
Yeah I also thought his release was quick too, especially on the run. If I had to find something to nitpick it would be that once or twice he accurately threw into a very tight window but which set up the WR to take a big hit from a DB. And Deonte Thompson should be cut. Too short, bad hands, bad instincts, unable to use his body to shield a DB. And still a bad KR.
He wasn't looking beyond one/two reads, it was vanilla and third string defense, etc... But that man throws a pretty ball. And an accurate one, too. I am really excited to see where he ends up. It would be pretty incredible to have a good QB. But, after watching the game highlight video, I'm going to settle in for a year of terrible offense and... Glennon. Ugh. I almost don't want Trubisky to play in the regular season, this year. This offense is so horrendous, I'd almost rather he just wait.
Ah yes, Dimm and his blinkered retard love for Grossman. Surpassed only by his serial stalker, chronic infatuation for Cutler. If ever there was a screen name that fit, it was Dimm's. I usually tend to give Bears fans a lot of slack on the boards, even when they're talking complete nonsense on the politics threads like Al. But Dimm was such an insecure, raging know-nothing fanboy that i couldn't let it slide. Tormenting him was great fun. His release is quick as fuck Err, no, its not. Im not talking about the velocity the ball comes out the hand and travels, thats down to arm strength and power, and yes he is notable for the easy power he seems to possess. But Im talking about windup to release and no way is Trubisky quick as f_ck. Rodgers is quick as f_ck. Brady is quick as f_ck. Brady may be the quickest right now, his throwing mechanic and technique is so compact is pretty crazy actually. Trubisky isn't close to that league. And just to be clear, im not talking throwing on the run, im not talking a flick into the flat, im talking a typical pocket based drop-back, progression, pass downfield. In fairness tho, Trubisky didn't look as slow as i feared on second viewing. First time around i thought he may be verging on Wentz or Flacco territory, which you can still succeed with evidently, but its far from ideal from a technique/NFL game speed perspective and not what you'd want ideally. Those guys do not have a quick release. Trubisky is probably just average, which doesn't make it a strength, but its not particularly a problem either. And frankly Trubisky seems to be so accurate that im not sure how much you would want to start playing around with throwing mechanics tbh.
The best part was how excited the rest of the team seemed by him last night and all the comments being made from players on both sides of the ball about him. Well said. The players know how important having a great QB is to the success of a team. Not sure why anyone would be negative about what he did. I and most of the others in here are aware of Preseason superstars but this is different because he was the second pick in the draft and is a QB. I also hate when people say "it was against 2's and 3's". Yeah no shit but he was also playing with 2's and 3's, this argument would hold a lot more water if he was playing with the starters versus 2's and 3's. What it comes down to for me is this. He showed potential a lot quicker than most everybody, including me, thought he would. The game didn't look to big for him. He looked comfortable and confident. He displayed things that you can't teach, he looked natural, great pocket presence and tremendous mobility. Above all, he displayed accuracy, another thing that isn't easy to develop if you don't have it naturally. In comparison, look at how Lynch played. Lynch looked like garbage and he is in his second year. I don't see any traits in Lynch that I saw in Trubisky and he played against the "2's and 3's" as well. I'm not saying to make him the starter but he needs to be given more opportunity to see if he can improve on that tremendous first game performance. Don't throw him to the wolves but don't stunt his growth because of some stupid plan you want to stick to. Lets see what he can do, don't rush it but give him more opportunities. He is the single most important player you have on this roster now, his development to be a starter as soon as he is ready is the number 1 priority and there isn't even a close second.
So I wanted to see what Watson did. His ball placement wasn't perfect although he did go downfield more.
Thanks @Mongo_76 for the vids, I went to a bar to watch it since it was the only live preseason game and got smashed so watching these sober makes me realize a few things. One, I was the one that said double coverage not Ev (he mentioned the wind up which on rewatch I don't think is bad at all, average maybe but his mechanics look good to my untrained eye), but yes tuna, I was talking about the 3:08 completion in that vid. blang says it right, it was a throw in a tight window, so that's what had me worried. But outside of that it was tight windows against one guy usually, and he was just accurate. It's a nit pick by me for sure but we only have that 6 minutes of plays to look at thus far, and I need to nit pick otherwise I'm going out and buying my Trubisky jersey and penciling in super bowls. Two, at 19 seconds left in the game, when drunk I thought Thompson had tons of time to get out of bounds. Instead, the throw was a bit low and I'm not sure he could have gotten it in a way where he could have ran out of bounds at all, so I take that back. And the "several in the hands" was apparently just the one in the end zone that was still a tough catch.
My mistake. Sorry Ev. They replayed the game on the NFl network this AM. I watched the last drive. I thought the throw could have been better, but I also don't think Thompson needed to go to the ground.
