lol! Nope, not quite... I disagree with that sentiment completely. You know I think highly of Mitch Trubisky, but I think Watson and Maholmes are both going to be pretty good as well. It's just that Kizer is gonna be the best of the bunch. Browns finally get some love from the football gods... I really do think this will be looked upon as one of the better QB classes to come along....and I didn't even mention the "wildcard" in Chad Kelly. If he gets a shot, he might hold it down a while too...
Maybe it's just that Manziel set the bar SO incredibly low...Perhaps I am a little too excited about a rookie QB that comes in and actually takes the job seriously. Taking the time to learn the playbook is a good thing...Avoiding inflatable swans is also a good thing...So far, nothing stupid has emerged from the young QB's we have in camp, and I for one, really appreciate that.
You don't really believe that, do you? Coaches hype up their players all the time! Coaches and teammates raved about Blake Bortles headed into 2016, predicting the playoffs. In the worst division in football, they went 3-13 and he continued to prove the fact that prototype QB's routinely fail in the NFL. Kubiak and Co. praised Osweiler after his first start. Chan Gailey sang the praises of Christian Hackenberg. In what might be the ultimate "that did not age well", Mike Shannahan raves about Bob Griffin. Can I ask why we're talking about DeShone Kizer and not Cody Kessler for a moment? Before he was drafted, did anyone think DeShone Kizer was capable of starting Week 1 as a rookie? I'm not saying Kizer can't be the best QB in this class, but how about we develop him first rather than toss him to the wolves as a rookie on a re-building team? Golden Domer #1: Golden Domer #2: Which one do you want starting as a rookie? Hint-1: we drafted both of them. Hint-2: we didn't start the other as a rookie, either. Hint-3: he was a huge flop. Hint-4:
He's getting second team reps while Kessler/Kizer split first team ones. He'll be gone by the final 53-man cut.
Again... is it too much to ask that we let the guy - who performed like a Top 15 QB with a dumpster fire of a team around him - who already knows the playbook start and prove he can't do it before handing the reins off to our fourth pick in the newest rookie class? Kizer isn't Russell Wilson. If Russell Wilson was 6'4" and 230 like Kizer, he'd have been drafted #1 overall over Andrew Luck. Kizer is Kizer. His closest comp is Blake Bortles - and even Bortles was a better college prospect.
Never liked Kizer, made fun of the pick. Hope you actually draft a real potential franchise QB early next year. Not that I hope you do bad this year but you get what I mean.
Old school here. Have never agreed of the now common practice of starting a rookie QB. Except for mop up situations, they shouldn't even get off the bench. I've seen far to many rookie QBs drafted high, and with a ton of talent, get trashed and their career never recovering, after their first season. I do not believe that so many NFL organizations draft as many "lousy" QBs as it appears these days. The QB position isn't just about learning the playbook, or taking reps with the first team. They also need to acclimate mentally to the huge leap from college to the pros. They need to be tutored for at least a season or two by veteran QBs and coaches, and that takes time. JMO Rok
That's okay Joe. Thanks for chiming in troll-like fashion.... We also have Kessler and about 14 other players (with more to come) , all stemming from our trade with your Eagles. Hopefully. we'll find somebody you don't "make fun of"...
If it makes you feel better I was on the record for hating Kizer (and Manziel) before the Browns took them. I like Kessler, as a backup. I think the Browns are trying to groom him to be there for a while. If he ends up being a great starter it is just a bonus.
SAS, how many people were raving about Dak Presscott at last years draft? Every QB is different. I don't remember Chan Gailey giving Hackenberg the green light to take reps with #1's, OR the #2's for that matter, so you'll have to refresh on that one.....And for the record, RG3 was a Dan Snyder pick, and it was FORCED down Mike Shannahans throat, totally against Mike's better judgement. The quote I remember best from Shanny about that infamous RG3 trade was, "Geezus C_____! We just traded ALL that!!?? We don't even know if this guy can take a snap and drop back to pass!!??" If you like Kessler, that's fine. Most of the football world sees him as a back-up (AT BEST!) in this league.... It's no secret that I have a bias against Golden Domers. I admitted as much. The ONLY thing I saw on Kizer (before we drafted him) was his unspectacular drills at the NFL combine. I made those comments, and I have to live with them. I'm just pleased that he has really changed my mind...I think he's a player. I did not realize how cerebral this kid is. I think he'll be great. And I'm aloud to think that, in spite of your Kessler crush...
It doesn't....but thanks anyway. We'll find out soon enough if Kizer is for real, or just another Browns flop destined to be made fun of for the rest of time...
Cool. It's not all about making fun of the Browns just because. I've been wrong before and you are free to smear it in my face if he breaks out.
Call me crazy, but I believe very strongly in our current regime....I honestly think that the days of the Browns being the "punching bag" of the NFL are drawing to an end.... Instead of the joke of the league, Sashi Brown and Co.are going to make the Cleveland Browns the "talk of the league" very soon....
I never think ANY rookie should start week 1. However: All due respect SAS, you nor I, know WHO THE HELL Kizer is yet... I am 100% in favor of starting Kessler, you know that I have championed that decision this entire off season...BUT, if Kizer has become the leader in the QB room already, has learned the entire playbook and knows it as well as Kessler, passes Kessler in executing that playbook on the field of play, in both practice and in preseason games...then, I'm sorry, but I want to win some freaking games. I want the best players at every position to be on that playing field come Sept. 10th, I HATE losing to the Steelers. If Kizer gives me a better chance to win, then dammit, that's who I want playing. You are great at acquiring stats...can you get the stats for the number of drops at Notre Dame in 2016? Because I watched every game and it has to be an epic number. Ridiculous drops that didn't just hit them in the hands, but the bread basket, the chest, helmet..it was embarrassing. What I do know about Kizer is that he faced a lot of hurdles in 2016. Should he have overcome them? Yes, I will agree a great QB finds a way. But, the running game was anemic, his receivers dropped balls and the defense couldn't hold their opponents to a 3 and out to save their life. Tough odds for any program, let alone a QB. You have to take a look at the total picture if you are going to blame a QB for his stats. I'll tell you this, no matter who is QB of the Browns this year, it will be a challenge because of the wide receiver group. If Njoku can't catch a cold (and his training camp is not making me feel all warm inside), then it could be another long year. I think the Browns will have a running game that keeps games close, but if drives are stopped dead in their tracks because of dropped balls, I might just go insane. For the record, Kizer might be JUST that guy..if you are solely basing it on college stats... Now, I know you would like to take all of your stats and roll them into a ball and decide on Kizer one and for all..but I'm telling you, the kid is smart and he'll make you look like a fool in the end. This is the most intelligent QB we have had in Berea in years, and he may just have the best arm that we have EVER had in Berea. We can start judging him in Cleveland when the games begin, but I would not start judging him now SAS...
Wow... you must be furious your team drafted Carson Wentz, then. Not every day you can sell the farm for a mechanically flawed quarterback who's regressed heading into his second season.
Dak Prescott and DeShone Kizer comparisons are ludicrous. Prescott was not a starter his first season, so please let's not count his 29 passing attempts as a full season. In his first season as a starter, he rushed for 829 yards and 13 touchdowns as he was more of a Tim Tebow quarterback. Kizer, meanwhile, played game-manager on a team with a solid rushing attack and defense. In Prescott's second season, when he was still a running quarterback (986 yards, 14 touchdowns) he demolished Kizer's stats in his "good" season. +569 passing yards +6 passing touchdowns +461 rushing yards +4 rushing touchdowns If Kizer gives us the best chance of winning then we're in for a very long season.
You mean his THIRD season?? I don't give a crap if he wasn't good enough to start in his first year, he didn't improve past Kizer until he was into his third year. His first two years were DEMOLISHED by Kizer's first two years...Are you seriously arguing that a QB played better as a Junior and Senior than one that played as a Freshman and Sophomore? That is...how did you put it? Ludicrous!!
