Since you posted it up, let's look at your Browns first. Cleveland Browns (7 picks) Round 1, pick 5 (from Jaguars): Mason Graham, DL, Michigan Round 2, pick 33: Carson Schwesinger, LB, UCLA Round 2, pick 36: Quinshon Judkins, RB, Ohio State Round 3, pick 67: Harold Fannin Jr., TE, Bowling Green Round 3, pick 94: Dillon Gabriel, QB, Oregon Round 4, pick 126: Dylan Sampson, RB, Tennessee Round 5, pick 144: Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado Added future draft picks: 2026 first round (Jacksonville), 2027 fifth round (Houston) Moving down, adding the future pick and getting a player like Graham is a solid move. @RTTRUTH mentioned about not noticing the idea of durability concerns for Hunter, and it's something that I had mentioned as well in my mock. Mason gives them the ability for disruption for the interior to pair with Garrett coming off the edge. Having a rusher in the passer's face is always a good thing. Carson feels like a pick that was derived heavily from the analytics side, but the athletic traits are there to quickly become a starter with impact. Judkins was an interesting pick. There are those that are going to say they should have taken Henderson here, but both of them feel like a 'coach's choice' kind of pick. I'm not as big on Fannin as some, so this is the first pick I feel like they reached on. Now, a lot of people are going to hate on the Gabriel pick. They're going to point to Sanders two picks later and scream 'WTF?!'. I won't be one of them, because even though I have Sanders much higher on my board than Gabriel, I'm probably much higher on Dillon than most. This is a talented kid that is going into a situation where he can compete immediately to make the roster, move up the depth chart, and try to become a future starter for the Browns. If you just remove Sanders from the equation and look at it as taking Dillon only, I think this is really good value for Cleveland. Dylan Sampson at 126 after taking Judkins earlier feels a bit like shoplifting a pack a smokes on the way out of the gas station. Might not make sense to young people that see the cigs locked in glass these days, but they used to keep the heaters right there on the counter. If you know, you know... And so, they grab Sanders with the last pick they have. It's the 5th round, so we'll never know just how far he might have tumbled if Cleveland passed, but this is obviously good value based on just the on-field product. The write up @RTTRUTH posted was interesting and likely tells part of the story. I still think there is a real possibility that he and his father tried to navigate the draft through the interview process at the combine, but they never had any leverage to try and force him into a situation. It's an extremely bad look for the kid and he is going to have to work his ass off to make the Browns roster. Right now, the Browns have Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders. The move for Pickett was to ensure they had a bridge with starter's experience, just in case they were able to get a passer they wanted in this draft. Flacco was the insurance signing, in the event that they couldn't make it happen in the draft, or Cousins never becomes available. They could still go after Kirk, but no they have it so that the Falcons have much less leverage in negotiations over contract money. Ultimately, the Browns have likely drafted a starting quarterback in this class. The question now will shift to how quickly one of these kids can move up the chart and secure the job. At some point, before the end of this season, either Dillon or Shedeur is going to be the starter to close out the year, and the other is going to be his primary backup. We might be looking at a 3rd and 5th round pick having a competition to be the Browns starter in 2026, and I can easily view that as a good thing for Cleveland.
Most important position in football. Two swings equals twice as likely. Ala RGIII and Kirk Cousins. Great example of how hedging your bet can prove beneficial Edit: love the heaters on the counter reference. Reminds me of one of my more hilarious childhood memories. I’ll try and circle back to this later
Pittsburgh Steelers (7 picks) Round 1, pick 21: Derrick Harmon, DL, Oregon Round 3, pick 83: Kaleb Johnson, RB, Iowa Round 4, pick 123: Jack Sawyer, EDGE, Ohio State Round 5, pick 164: Yahya Black, DL, Iowa Round 6, pick 185: Will Howard, QB, Ohio State Round 7, pick 226: Carson Bruener, LB, Washington Round 7, pick 229: Donte Kent, CB, Central Honestly Jon, I love the Steelers draft. Don’t know much about those two 7th rounders to be honest. But I caught an interview with Mike Tomlin on the haul. And what I took away from it is they feel maybe they’ve lost a bit of that physical edge they’re largely known for. As he put it, “We want to get back to playing that Big-boy football”. I think the two Iowa kids and Derrick Harmon exemplify that beautifully. And Sawyer is also just a lunchpail, high IQ football player. He will fit in great. As for the QB, amazing value I think. Obviously he’s a longshot as a starter. But as far as longshots go, he might be my favorite in this draft, outside those projected 1st rounders (Ward/Dart/Sanders) If physicality was their goal, this class is a win IMO. Might actually be a top 5 draft for me. Top 10 for sure.
Appreciate the feedback Danny. I was thrilled with the first couple picks. Perfect fits for both players, with Johnson maybe being the quintessential fit for Pittsburgh out of all the RBs. Even as a huge Michigan fan (still waiting on the flair), I appreciate what the two Buckeyes bring to the table. You hit the nail on the head with Sawyer. He’s gritty and stellar vs the run. Has some work to do against the pass, but is in the perfect situation as the 3 guys ahead of him excel at that. Howard looks the part and can sit. Ack for a year (or two) and grow with the possibility of becoming a starter.
Additionally, even as a 3rd rounder, there’s a chance Kaleb Johnson is actually an improvement over what Najee had been providing recently. At the least, I doubt there’s much of a drop off.
Pittsburgh Steelers (7 picks) Round 1, pick 21: Derrick Harmon, DL, Oregon Round 3, pick 83: Kaleb Johnson, RB, Iowa Round 4, pick 123: Jack Sawyer, EDGE, Ohio State Round 5, pick 164: Yahya Black, DL, Iowa Round 6, pick 185: Will Howard, QB, Ohio State Round 7, pick 226: Carson Bruener, LB, Washington Round 7, pick 229: Donte Kent, CB, Central Michigan If Harmon had gone before #21, it wouldn't have surprised me. He felt like the Steelers pick from early on. @ShanePHallam mentioned a medical situation that could have potentially pushed him down some more, but this is a prototypical Steelers pick, and a good one. I'm kind of surprised they went with Kaleb Johnson in the 3rd. There were quite a few good DBs still on the board at that point, and Kaleb feels more like a one-gear rusher that lacks some creativity. I guess they just scouted him in black and gold and said 'yeah, he looks like a Steeler'. The Sawyer pick is the one that is the most intriguing to me. This is more Kevin Greene than Greg Lloyd, so he fits into the room with a chance at a defined role early on, IMO. He's a bigger guy than what some imagine at the position, he plays with power, and he's a solid tackler. That gives him utility on early downs when spelling Highsmith or Watt, which may quickly make him a better option than Herbig in those situations, while Nick will likely remain the primary spell option in passing downs. Yahya probably makes more sense for Pittsburgh than most rosters. I don't think the ceiling is there for him to be a fulltime starter with impact, but he does come across as a player that will be on a roster for many years. Kind of has the feel of one of those guys the Steelers draft that just becomes a name that everyone is familiar with, he pops up on the screen with some regularity on game days, and the 5 o'clock news mentions him handing out turkey to the homeless on occasion. Maybe he has a stretch of starts at some point, but he feels like a career backup. Kind of the same thing with Will Howard. I know @IrishDawg42 feels like there is some potential for a starter here, but I disagree. However, quarterbacks like Howard on your depth chart are never a bad thing. You're going to get competent play with some potential spot starting ability, but there is an obvious ceiling here. Bruener and Kent both feel like their special teams play is going to determine the ability to stick on a roster. Not a lot of upside, but solid football fundamentals and an obviously good work ethic in both. If Kent was a touch bigger, I would like his chances at making the switch to safety.
I agree, looked like a typical Steelers value draft. They found future starters despite not having a second round pick. I have been outspoken on where I placed Will Howard. I had him far behind Cam Ward, then clumped together with Jaxson Dart and Shedeur Sanders.. If I'm being honest, sandwiched between them. So despite taking two QBs, I have the Steelers pick ahead of both.
