I'm sure there will be more than one team, perhaps many teams pursuing that leftover kicker. Are you just assuming that any one team can easily get him? Ummm no GM would do that if he REALLY wanted him. Much better to draft the one you think is best in the 6th or 7th if you need him rather than open bidding for the 3rd or even less desirable prospects. Pure need pick and probably the most justifiable need pick there is for a late round pick.
Completely forgot to post my second, but I was not expecting someone to pick him Broncos sign WR Hal Presley, Baylor
Not what I said. And most kickers in the league were never on any real draft radars over the years. I was just saying there are many kickers to choose from and only a few are worth drafting if you like what everyone else likes. 4-5 of them are in this class, and there are more guys that teams may like for whatever reason.
I agree with that. But both the jets and the ravens would be very smart to take Fitzgerald and Borregales this draft. Ravens should be looking for their next Tucker, and the jets should be sick and tired of the endless tryouts for mediocre kickers and look for their first Tucker. Points on the board man. My team doesn't get them or help from kickers. It has been frustrating for the longest time and cost us losses that could and should easily have been wins.
IMO Borregales is the clear K1 but I don't think it definitely the case for Fitzgerald. Fitz was 5-5 from 50+ with a 59 yard kick but he isn't all too consistent when not hitting a full power shot from 30-50 and because FSU sucked he didn't have a large sample size this season. I'd argue that Fitzgerald is the 5th kicker at best. Loop, Sauls and Maddux Trujillo are arguably all juicier prospects at the pro level and Caden Davis is probably a step below but an interesting prospect who could take a step up with more experience.
Funny thing, in the pros they even look at your mechanics and hangtime, at least for kickoff purposes. But basic success percentage and at least an ability to hit 53+ don’t hurt. I’m often amazed in a league where some pretty average WRs, TEs, and OLs get $10+ at how often a team will let a kicker who’s success rate ranks top 10 walk over seemingly $4-$5M
IMO Fitz is the worst of those 6 with hangtime. Trujillo can improve on it on his kickoffs as well but his actual FG kicks hangtime is fine.
agree on the FSU offense but his growth trajectory is very promising. Higher ceiling perhaps. It's not just the 5/5 over 50, the season was perfect. I'd be thrilled to have him and we'll see if only one is drafted. I do like Loop and would have drafted him ihad both Borregales and Fitzgerald been already taken there (as will most assuredly will be IRL... they go before 7th I bet).
I have never seen Trujillo’s name anywhere. So you’re digging deep for this discussion. Let’s all agree he ain’t getting drafted
I'll give you the most obvious source, from the NFL's website and a 6-7 grade. Decent breakdown on him and why he might be coveted. Not the most consistent but he has the mechanics and some of the traits that teams look for in kickers you wonder every offseason where they came from. He drilled 2 60+ yarders this season too. 1 that was good from about 69-70 and a 64-yarder he got in off the crossbar. Maddux Trujillo Draft and Combine Prospect Profile | NFL.com
No I get that. I'm just saying perfect is 13 for 13. That's barely a kick a game and he only took 3 kicks in his 30-49 range he is known to struggle at.
all goes back to whether it's worth a 6th round pick IRL (=7th here in a mock). For the Jets, it sure is. And again iIMO the Ravens should as well. Other teams? I don't really know, depends how many seasons of sh*tty kickers they've suffered through in the last few decades.
Boise's Jonah Dalmas is probably the only other kicker I didn't mention that I can think of that could get drafted if scouts think his bad year this season can be ignored. He was a big fav to be drafted before this season.
Honestly, I haven't followed Zierlein much. Not one of my preferred sources. Although in theory he's closer to real NFL people. Still have to side with the law of averages, at least as it pertains to this current discussion. NFLDraftBuzz gives Fitzgerald an 81.2 grade. They don't even mention Trujillo ProFootballNetwork doesn't seem to be trying hard on specialists, but nonetheless, Sauls and Borregales in the top 500, actually have Fitz and Trujillo outside the top 530. Both mags I have (yeah, they're mostly garbage) have Fitzgerald 1 believe it or not (5th and 6th round). Neither mentions Trujillo. The Athlon one doesn't even mention Borregales though lol. Has Loop as only other kicker worth mentioning. The Lindys one put Borregales at 2.
Counter argument to the "draft a kicker" thing might still be, Roberto Aguayo. Nothing in his resume said he wouldn't be good. Buccs traded up to draft him in the 2nd round after years of horrible kicking for their squad. He Still flopped. I definitely agree if you're a team that has a strong belief in the consistency of a kicking prospect, whether PK or P, they're easily worth a 6th or 7th imo. Getting up into 2nd and 3rd round, pretty debatable.
And guys, maybe most importantly, let's remember the Colts actually signed the best PK prospect in this class.
