MIAMI GARDENS -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has cleared concussion protocol and will play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, coach Mike McDaniel said Friday.
Commanders QB Jayden Daniels practices, could play vs. Bears ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was limited in practice Friday after not practicing the previous two days, but there's still a chance he plays Sunday vs. the Chicago Bears. Daniels suffered a rib injury in the first quarter of a Week 7 win over Carolina. Marcus Mariota would start if Daniels can't play when the Commanders (5-2) host the Bears (4-2). It's possible Daniels' status won't be revealed until Sunday afternoon; the game is scheduled to kick off at 4:25 p.m. "He really pushed it today," Washington coach Dan Quinn said. "We'll let our eyes decide how he responds over the next 48 hours. That'll guide us and we'll make the best decision for him and the team." Daniels said he feels good. "I want to play but it's not my decision," he said. "It feels better, but I've still got some time. I've still got some marks I need to hit so they feel comfortable putting me out there." Daniels did not participate in practice during the approximately 20 minutes open to the media Friday. During part of that time the four quarterbacks were working inside the team's practice bubble while the rest of the players were outside stretching and going through individual drills. But the other three quarterbacks -- Mariota, Jeff Driskel and Sam Hartman -- all arrived to the field before the open viewing ended. Mariota and Driskel were participating in the team's customary Friday red zone passing reps. However, Quinn said during this period Daniels was inside working on strengthening and conditioning his core area. He later joined the session for full-team drills. Quinn said there were no limitations on Daniels Friday and he called it a "good day" for his rookie passer. When he was at practice, Quinn said they tested his ability to scramble and make throws as well as his sudden movements vs. a blitz or other pressure. Daniels did not practice Wednesday and Thursday. But, Quinn said, they followed the plan they laid out for Daniels at the beginning of the week - including for Friday. "You have to push it to see where you're at," Quinn said. "He keeps knocking down the steps and now we'll through them again [Saturday]." Daniels said he's confident the organization will make the right decision about him playing Sunday. "It's football. At the end of the day things happen," Daniels said. "Sometimes you might have to fight through something, but if you could go, you can give your all and be smart about it. Obviously they wouldn't put me in any position they wouldn't feel comfortable in. For my future, I don't want to put myself in that predicament either." ESPN
Shane Steichen on Anthony Richardson starting this week: We’re evaluating everything Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson asked to come out of Sunday’s loss to the Texans for a play because he “needed a break” after doing a lot of running on the two previous plays. On Monday, head coach Shane Steichen said it’s possible the team will be asking Richardson to spend a longer period of time on the bench in Week Nine and beyond. Steichen was asked at his press conference if Richardson will be the starting quarterback against the Vikings this week. “We’re evaluating everything,” Steichen said, via multiple reporters. Richardson missed two games with an oblique injury earlier this year and has completed 44.4 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and seven interceptions in his six starts. Joe Flacco started the two games that Richardson did not play and would presumably return to the starting lineup if the Colts decide that it is time to make a change. PFT
Source: Packers QB Jordan Love's MRI shows no significant damage GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The groin injury that Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love sustained in the win Sunday over the Jacksonville Jaguars is not expected to keep him sidelined long term, a source told ESPN. Tests on Monday did not show any significant damage, and it is considered a strain. A source said his availability for Sunday's NFC North showdown against the Detroit Lions will be about how he feels and progresses throughout the week. If the Packers (6-2) don't have Love on Sunday against the Lions (6-1), there's a good chance it will be the only game he misses because Green Bay has its bye the following week. ESPN
Colts center Ryan Kelly and coach Shane Steichen both had conversations with quarterback Anthony Richardson about tapping out for a play Sunday. Richardson left the game for a third-and-goal play in the third quarter, admitting afterward that he was “tired.” Steichen called it a “learning moment” for the second-year quarterback. Richardson has been roasted by sports talk, fans and former players for asking out of the game after back-to-back scrambles. It did not go over well in the locker room either. “We had a conversation about it, and I think he knows that’s not the standard he needs to play up to and the rest of the team holds him, too,” Kelly said, via video from Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan. “I’ll kind of leave the conversation we had at that. I know he’s going to take some criticism for that, and rightfully so, that’s a tough look. But also he’s out there giving it all for his team, right? It’s not always pretty at times. An offensive lull the last couple of weeks, just having a hard time getting going at times. I thought we did some good things in the game. If anybody questions how hard he plays, I don’t think that’s the case. If you watch his film, surely we didn’t move the ball effectively at times, but he’s giving it everything for his teammates. He’s young. I’m sure it’s a learning moment for him, and I’ll leave it at that.” Joe Flacco replaced Richardson for a handoff on third-and-goal from the Houston 23, and the Colts kicked a field goal. Richardson has completed only 44.4 percent of his passes for 958 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions, and Steichen has not committed to him for this week. PFT
Report: Colts giving Anthony Richardson a break, not quitting on him While the Colts are benching Anthony Richardson for Joe Flacco, they’re not planning for this to be permanent. That’s according to Stephen Holder of ESPN, who noted on Tuesday that a team source explained that Indianapolis wants Richardson to take a step back, take a break from the day-to-day pressures of being the starter, and try to grow. “We are not quitting on Anthony,” Holder’s source told him. “That will be the story, but that is not the case.” Richardson, Holder added, was “pretty devastated” by the news, but the team believes he will handle it like a pro. The club has no concerns about that. When the Colts selected Richardson at No. 4 overall last year, they wanted him to gain experience by playing. The thought was that while there may be growing pains, Richardson could potentially develop out of them by being on the field. But Richardson was able to play just four games last year and he’s also missed time this season due to injury. He then invited some controversy by admitting he tapped out of a drive during Sunday’s game because he was tired. In six starts in 2024, Richardson has completed just 44.4 percent of his passes for 958 yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. In his four appearances, Flacco has a 65.7 percent completion rate with 716 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception. PFT
Shane Steichen: Joe Flacco is our QB going forward Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that the team is making a quarterback change on Wednesday and he said it’s not a temporary move. Steichen told reporters at a Wednesday press conference that Joe Flacco is the team’s starting quarterback “going forward.” Steichen said after last Sunday’s loss to the Texans that the team would be evaluating everything with former starter and 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson and word that Flacco would be replacing him for this Sunday’s game against the Vikings broke on Tuesday. Richardson has made 10 NFL starts, which some would argue is not enough time to develop into an NFL starter especially when Richardson came into the league short on starting experience in college. Steichen said that the move to Flacco should not be taken as a sign that the team is throwing in the towel on the second-year player. “A tough decision, but one that I felt was in the best interest in our football team,” Steichen said, via Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan. “Joe gives us the best chance to win right now. With that being said, we’re not giving up on Anthony by any means. We’re really not. He’s a young player with a ton of talent. He’ll use this time to continue to develop and grow as a professional.” Richardson will need full-speed reps to get better at some point, but the Colts are prioritizing the team’s present over his future for the time being and hoping that they can wind up better off in both time periods as a result. PFT _____________ INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts coach Shane Steichen says the decision to bench Anthony Richardson was his and was prompted because of a belief that veteran Joe Flacco "gives us the best chance to win right now." Steichen on Wednesday defended his decision to replace Richardson, the No. 4 pick in 2023, after 10 career starts (six in 2024) and while his team has a 4-4 record. Asked whether he wrestled with the future implications of the decision versus the team's present reality, Steichen said he did struggle to work through it all. "It's a difficult thing," he said. "But it's my obligation to the 53 guys in this organization to win football games, and right now, I'm focused on the present: winning football games. We'll get to the future when we have to get to the future." Richardson told reporters Wednesday that "of course it hurts" to lose his starting job but added that he still feels he has support in the locker room. "As a competitor, definitely don't want to be told that you're not the guy anymore for the upcoming week," Richardson said. "... I'm using this moment as an opportunity to grow and just learn from my mistake." Steichen, general manager Chris Ballard and owner Jim Irsay each said after Richardson was drafted that playing and gaining valuable experience was the fastest route to his improvement. He arrived in Indianapolis tied with Mitch Trubisky (No. 2 in 2017) for the fewest college starts (13) of any quarterback drafted in the first round. "I know I said that," Steichen said. "Things change. So I think right now, sitting back and seeing a veteran that's done it at a high level for a long time, you can develop that way as well." Steichen reiterated that Richardson's decision to tap out for one play during Sunday's loss to the Houston Texans was not a factor in his personnel decision. "It didn't," Steichen said. "He knows he can't do that in that situation. That's part of the growth and the development process that we go through. And again, I think [Flacco] gives us the best chance right now going forward." Richardson, 22, has a 44.4% completion rate this season, which is the fifth worst in a player's first six games of a season since 2000, according to ESPN Research. Flacco, 39, replaced Richardson when he was injured earlier this season and passed for 716 yards, 7 touchdowns and 1 interception in parts of three games, when the Colts went 2-1. ESPN _____________ _______________________ I wonder if this was in the back of Steichen's mind for a while and when Richardson pulls himself out of a game, that was the moment that made the decision a whole bunch easier.
Not even JaMarcus Russell tapped out of a game, and we all know his conditioning was lacking. I’ve never seen anything like that.
Yeah, this benching is a life lesson for his future. Fact is, at this point Flacco does give them the best chance to win RIGHT NOW. But that will change very soon. He needs to know this isn’t college. This move should show him that.
Im wondering if he has been playing injured and not totally recovered... I cant imagine someone bailing because their winded or tired. Might be more to the story.
That may be, but he stated that he ran the ball on 3 consecutive plays and he was winded and felt he couldn't execute the play properly on a 3rd and 23 (I believe. I know it was 3rd and long). Then the coach confirmed that was indeed the case, he removed himself because of fatigue from running 3 plays in a row. *Not all designed runs*
