Hmmm, this one was a surprise to me.... Ridder seemed like a taller poor man's Kyler Murray to me. Maybe they sign him back to the "emergency 3rd QB" spot.. so not part of the 53 man roster, but there for injuries.

 

And I believe Tune is the back-up now, so IF Murray would go down again, there up shitzcreek without a paddle.

 

Kevin Stefanski on keeping four quarterbacks: “We had four good quarterbacks”

The Browns have four quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster. Why is that?

“We have four good quarterbacks,” coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters on Tuesday. “Simply.”

The question is whether they’ll have four on the roster on September 8, when the Browns host the Cowboys.

“We’ll see,” he said. “I can speak for today. What’s today?”

Today isn’t the 8th. That’s 12 days away. And the Browns could still trade or release Jameis Winston or Dorian Thomson-Robinson or Tyler Huntley before then.

Could it be Winston? Stefanski was evasive when asked whether Winston will be the No. 2 quarterback, behind Deshaun Watson.

“I mean, like we talked about earlier, we’re not setting the depth chart at any position,” Stefanski said. “Obviously, we think very highly of Jameis and all those guys.”

They think highly enough of them to use four roster spots on the position — even if the goal is to get a draft pick for one of them.

In the end, it’ll be a surprise if the Browns don’t keep three quarterbacks. Given the injury issues that seem to constantly swirl around Watson, it would be foolish to have only one quarterback ready to go, if Watson can’t.

Steelers name Russell Wilson their starting quarterback

Russell Wilson went into the preseason with the pole position to be named the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh and he didn’t relinquish it.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin named Wilson the team’s starter for their Week One game in Atlanta on Wednesday. Tomlin previously said that he would make the announcement at the end of the week, but decided to put an early end to the suspense.

Tomlin sent a pretty strong signal about whether Wilson or Justin Fields would get the nod by playing Wilson for one series in the preseason finale. That drive ended in a touchdown, which was something that Wilson couldn’t manage in his first preseason outing, and the Steelers will be hoping that there will be a lot of them coming in the regular season as well.

Wilson’s results in Denver the last two seasons create more than a little reason to doubt that will be the case, but Wilson will get his chance to turn things around in Pittsburgh.

Head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters at a Wednesday press conference that he’s made a choice between veteran Jacoby Brissett and first-round pick Drake Maye, but that he has not shared the news with either player or with the team at large at this point. Mayo said he wants “both sides to hear it from me” and that hasn’t been possible on Wednesday because of ongoing roster machinations.

“I’m gonna talk to the individual players tomorrow. I’m gonna have a team meeting tomorrow and then I’m gonna get it to you guys,” Mayo said.

Josh Allen doesn’t mind being regarded as overrated

Bills quarterback Josh Allen sometimes gets called “overrated.” As G.M. Brandon Beane said last month, the label shows there are “idiots everywhere.”

Allen doesn’t mind it, even if a recent ESPN poll of anonymous players had 11 of them dub him as the most overrated player in the league.

“So my reaction is I’m not mad that 11 players not on my team don’t like me, right?” Allen told Adam Schien of SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio. “So that’s number one. I actually think that’s a term of endearment. When other players don’t like me that means I’m doing something the right way. I am mad at, however, I’m never, ever invited to participate in these anonymous surveys. So, that’s where I find this frustrating. I want to be a part of these surveys, too, and give my input as well.”

Allen also was asked whether it motivates him. Like many players, he said it doesn’t (even if it sort of does).

“I would love to say. ‘Yes, it does motivate me,’ and I could put it on my locker and use it as bulletin board material,” Allen told Schein, “but the fact is . . . I’m going into year seven, I’m coming out of a small farm town called Fireball, California, I had no offers, went the junior college route, ended up having one offer, University of Wyoming, got drafted seventh overall by the Buffalo Bills. So, again, I’m in a spot where not many people — maybe me and my family are the only people that thought that I’d ever be here — so I’m gonna keep running with that, it serves me well, and I’m just gonna keep playing football the way I know how to play it.”

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo has chosen Jacoby Brissett as the team's starting quarterback as the veteran held off a late surge from rookie Drake Maye, the No. 3 pick in the draft.

"We have decided, or I have decided, that Jacoby Brissett will be our starting quarterback this season," Mayo said Thursday. "In saying that, as an organization, we are 100% behind Jacoby. There is no 'You got a guy right here, you got a guy right there.' We're 100% behind Jacoby."

 

Steelers QB Russell Wilson (calf) limited in practice ahead of season opener vs. Falcons

With three days between now and his first start as a Steeler, Russell Wilson has run into a bit of a speed bump during the week of preparation.

The quarterback was limited in Thursday's session with calf tightness, coach Mike Tomlin told reporters. Tomlin added that Wilson self reported the issue, and he will be further examined.

Dak Prescott: Both sides are working to complete a contract extension

A report Thursday indicates the Cowboys and Dak Prescott’s representation have made progress toward a long-term contract for the quarterback. How much progress is the question.

Three days before the season opener, Prescott remains headed toward free agency in March.

“I’d say they’re working,” Prescott said of talks, via Schuyler Dixon of the Associated Press. “I don’t know if that’s necessarily the time line. I can’t say, ‘Hell, I’ll put a timeline to [vice president of football operations/football administration] Todd [Williams] and Stephen [Jones] if we don’t get this done, this or that, but I know they’re working.”

Prescott, though, makes clear that he’s working on getting ready for the Browns, not worrying about his contract. He said what happens on the football field is the “only thing that matters.”

“I’ve never played the game for [money],” Prescott said. “I play the game for the pure love, for the guys in that locker room. This game has always brought me something that not a lot of things in life do. That’s the type of peace it does, being out there between the lines with people you share a brotherhood with. There is something special about this game of football, and we’re just blessed that money comes with it, and I’m in the position I’m in that we can be having these conversations, but that doesn’t motivate me.”

Prescott had less to say about contract talks than last week when he said he didn’t care whether a deal got done before the opener, while indicating the start of the season was his deadline. Prescott also said last week he no longer listens to anything owner Jerry Jones tells the media.

“People change their feelings daily. Can’t say I have the same feelings I had last week,” Prescott said Thursday.

Prescott has leverage, with no-trade and no-tag clauses in the four-year, $160 million deal he signed in 2021. It’s his decision whether he enters free agency in 2025, regardless what the Cowboys offer, and it will take a record deal with much of it guaranteed to get him to sign now.

Russell Wilson officially questionable for season opener

All signs are pointing to Justin Fields starting at quarterback for the Steelers on Sunday.

The latest indication is the Steelers list Wilson as questionable after a second consecutive limited practice. Fields took the first-team reps Friday.

Wilson originally injured his calf pushing a sled during the team’s conditioning test the day before training camp. He missed 10 practices while rehabbing.

Wilson played six series in the preseason, with the injury appearing to be behind him. But Wilson experienced tightness in Thursday’s practice, limiting him.

Thus, Fields, not Wilson, likely takes the field with the starting offense against the Falcons.

The Steelers ruled out wide receiver Roman Wilson (ankle), offensive guard Isaac Seumalo (pectoral) and defensive lineman Logan Lee (calf).

Love suffered an MCL sprain during the Packers' season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday in Brazil, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Saturday, per sources.

Pelissero added that the recovery timeline for Love, whose ACL is intact, is in the range of three to six weeks, but there's optimism he could return sooner than later, pending a second opinion.

Malik Willis and Sean Clifford are the #2 and #3 QB's as of now for the Packers.

I'm guessing the Packers make a roster move for depth at QB. There are too many capable fill-in starters available for them to stand pat with what they have in Love's absence.

Dak Prescott, Cowboys agree on four-year, $240M extension

Quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys spent all offseason talking about a contract extension and they finally got a deal done about 90 minutes before the start of the regular season.

According to multiple reports, Prescott has agreed to a four-year deal with the Cowboys. The deal is worth $240 million and includes $231 million in guaranteed money.

The deal makes Prescott the highest-paid player in the history of the NFL and it answers the questions about his future in Dallas that have swirled around him and the team for the last couple of years.

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb also signed a new deal recently, which leaves Micah Parsons as the next man up for a new deal with the Cowboys.

Kirk Cousins “disappointed” in his debut performance with Falcons

The Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million, delivering an expectation that the team instantly would be better on offense. On Sunday, they weren’t.

The Falcons led 10-9 at halftime. They lost 18-10, with three first downs and 51 total yards in the second half.

It was not what Cousins, the Falcons or Falcons fans had in mind.

“I was disappointed,” Cousins said, via team transcript. “Certainly disappointed. You always go out there with an expectation that you’re going to play at a high level, and we didn’t play up to our standards today.”

Cousins threw two interceptions, and he and center Drew Dalman botched a snap that hit the legs of Ross Dwelley, who was in motion.

“The timing was off,” Cousins said. “It’s my fault, sending the motion and asking for the ball, and the timing was off. So, it’s something that you have to bat a thousand, and you can’t have a mistake, and we paid for it today.”

Playing his first game since tearing his Achilles while with the Vikings last season, Cousins finished his day 16-of-26 for 155 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

“We have to avoid critical errors,” Cousins said. “We always say that, but we have to do it. I think if we do that and keep ourselves in manageable down in distances, I think today showed it, you know, we can be a productive offense. But when we hurt ourselves, it’s tough to overcome.”

Cousins, 36, did not play in the preseason. He was asked if the offense might have played better Sunday if they had.

“It’s hard to say,” Cousins said. “I think the key is that we’re healthy for Week 1, and that was really the focus. There’s never excuses. You have to be ready to go when your number is called regardless. That was certainly no different today.”
